  1. THE DB’S
    Repercussion
    1982 UK pressing

A landmark album of the early #80s #janglepop sound gets last spin of the night.

Repercussion is the more polished second album from what I feel is one of the most underrated bands ever.

Twelve catchy and wonderfully melodic songs; six each written by Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple, a bit of a Lennon/McCartney of #1980s #powerpop .

Shimmering guitars, great harmonies… it’s a great album that critics loved, but the general public pretty much ignored. It wasn’t successful at all, and shortly after, Chris Stamey was gone and off to a solo career.

There was a 2024 remaster of this done, which had a first EVER U.S. pressing, but in all honestly, I didn’t care for it. My ears are just too used to the original master, but I’m glad it gave people a chance to discover this great album.

    ā€œNeverlandā€ is total perfection.

  2. THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
    Adore
    2026 Worldwide 2xLP reissue

I’m taking my teenage son to see the Pumpkins in Vancouver in November, and I’m really excited for him.

To prepare, we’re wading through the albums in their discography that he’s NOT familiar with (everything except Siamese Dream, Pisces, Mellon Collie).
We listened to Gish the other night, & now, we have come to Adore.

For me, Adore is a little heavy handed at times, but not without its charms.
    The great songs are GREAT.

So far, my son’s reaction to it is…surprised.

His initial thoughts were that it feels really pulled back, which I fully agree with.

The usual walls of distorted guitars are replaced by more keyboards, drum machines, and dare I say.. restrained (?) percussion and rhythm?

The result is a darker, but more spacious Pumpkins.

  3. I just watched Ned Kelly with Mick Jagger.

I feel absolutely and irreversibly violated.

What terrible acting, and what a terrible movie.

I could sit at an insurance seminar for hours… WITH A SMILE ON MY FACE… and people could say ā€œHow can you stand it, Ape?ā€.

    And I would reply ā€œBecause I’ve seen Ned Kelly.ā€

    -8 out of 5 stars.

  4. THE TUBS
    Dead Meat
    2023 U.S. pressing

For the last 3 years, I’ve been having a passionate love affair with The Tubs.

It was absolute love at first listen, & they are without a doubt my favorite band of the past 10 years, and it’s not even close.

This was their 1st album, & it was the first one I heard.
Like the following two albums, the songs are wonderfully constructed; jangly, catchy, and heartfelt.

Their sense of melody is some upper- echelon shit, the lyrics are great, the rhythm section is fantastic… everything about this band is just fantastic.
Not a single bad (or even AVERAGE) song in their entire catalog.

If you don’t know The Tubs, please get to.
    Start with Dead Meat.
You’ll be glad you did, I promise.

It always ends up that THESE kinds of bands don’t last long.
I’m hoping that’s not the case with The Tubs.
    Amazing shit.
