Épiclèse des dieux grecs
Ouh là ! Un mot grossier pour les ignares : épiclèse. C’est une invocation, en grec antique. Car chaque dieu ne peut s’appréhender dans la totalité de sa puissance. L’épiclèse décrit le fractionnement de chaque divinité, ce qui fait fonctionner le polythéisme. Notre monothéisme d’aujourd’hui ne comprend pas cet éparpillement du sacré.
Or le dieu grec se morcelle pour s’adresser à l’homme, et cela condense sa grandeur. Il s’adresse aux mortels en s’invitant chez eux, au sein même de son espace, pour s’approprier un lieu qui devient sanctuaire. Il y dévoile là un aspect de lui-même, l’une de ses multiples fonctions. Ainsi Artémis « Aux marais » à Sparte, et Héra « Des hauteurs » à Corinthe. Le nom peut indiquer la fonction d’une divinité sur un territoire particulier. Ainsi Déméter est dite « Pourvoyeuse de fruits » à Tégée, Aphrodite « De la navigation propice » à Cnide, Athéna Niké « Garante de la victoire » à Athènes. L’épithète accolée au dieu indique encore son action. Apollon est apotropaïque quand il protège et épicurios quand il vient en aide.
La piété humaine reconnaît que le dieu est toujours là, au-delà de ses dénominations. Les manifestations divines sont variables selon les circonstances ou les lieux, même s’il s’agit d’un être divin unique. Le mortel exprime l’inconscience immédiate qu’il a d’une multiplicité d’aspects en l’appelant la divinité sous divers noms. Un dieu s’occupe de tout. Zeus est à la fois « Des hauteurs » et « le Surveillant », « Des bornage » et « l’Aimable », ou « De la cité », ou encore Téléios, « de protection du mariage humain » quand il protège la reproduction. Le Zeus « des Hauteurs » est celui qui veille sur l’agora, mais aussi sur la maison.
Un Grec ne s’adresse pas à Athéna tout court, mais selon sa cité, ou selon le sanctuaire dans lequel il se trouve. Il honore telle ou telle manifestation particulière de la déesse : Athéna Polias « Protectrice de la cité », Athéna Ergané « l’industrieuse », Athéna Niké « garante de la victoire », Athéna Agoraia « bonne conseillère du peuple », Athéna Thémis « garante de la justice », Athéna Sôteria « protectrice des marins » au Pirée, Hippia « amie des chevaux » à Colone, et ainsi de suite. L’Athéna Zostoria est à la fois la déesse qui protège le guerrier qui boucle son ceinturon avant le combat, et la protectrice de la future mère qui dénoue sa ceinture pour accoucher. On dénombre plus de 200 épiclèses d’Athéna, au moins 340 pour Aphrodite et plus de 700 pour Artémis.
Le polythéisme signifie moins qu’il y a plusieurs dieux que la pluralité des aspects d’un même dieu. Le premier d’entre eux est l’ambivalence. Ainsi Apollon évoque la pureté et la lumière du soleil, mais en même temps la terreur et la panique. Phobos est à l’origine de notre « phobie », un effroi. Zeus est l’Aimable mais aussi le Zeus des trépassés. Car le sacré grec est fondamentalement redoutable et menaçant. Il est toujours ambivalent, ce qui en fait aussi un havre d’espérance.
