  1. And furthermore! The vast majority of YA characters written by older authors read like old geezer characters anyway. Stop pretending you are successfully writing 16 year olds just so you can sell in a more lucrative genre. We noticed. 🤣😅 #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #amwriting #yabooks #bipocauthors #indieauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

  2. Marrow Thieves follows a group of indigenous Canadians through a dystopian world where indigenous people are being hunted for their bone marrow. It not only challenges us to consider the terrifying weight of colonialism, but it’s impact on the world. 3. My primary goal with social media is to highlight and advocate for marginalized writers because we cannot effectively fight for diversity while the voices of marginalized people aren’t being heard. 4. The challenge with writing marginalized stories is finding a balance between addressing the struggle that comes with a marginalized identity while also being intentional about creating a world where those identities are commonplace and uncomplicated. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #amwriting #writingcommunity #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #BlackMastadon

  9. I was gifted a copy of this book by Tor Teen Publishing. I have not read it yet. But I’m excited to read it. It follows a pair of Black, magical twins who have to solve the thirty year old murder of their mother in order to save the New Orleans magical community from utter destruction. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #writingcommunity #amwriting #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

  10. I haven’t read this yet. I just received it this week as an early review copy from Grand Central Publishing. It follows Katrina Kim as her obsession with her coworker, Kurt, threatens to unravel her life. Broadly stated, it is a psychological thriller about a stalker who finds out that she is also, in fact, being stalked. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #writingcommunity #indieauthors #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing #amwriting

  11. I read an advanced reader copy of The Lies of AJUNGO this week. I loved it. It was a very short, easy read and yet it managed to tackle huge concepts like systemic power, disability and the power of a misinformation campaign. Can’t wait for you all to be able to read it so we can discuss! #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #writingcommunity #amwriting #indieauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

  12. Angel of Greenwood is a retelling of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. It follows two young Black teenagers: Isaiah and Angel, as they enjoy their last few weeks on Black Wallstreet. It was written for a younger audience and manages to capture the horror of one of the most horrific attacks on Black America without the graphic details many comparable books offer. 5/5 ⭐️. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #bipocauthors #writewithmichael#writingcommunity Grab a copy: bookshop.org/a/87137/978125082

  13. INDIE BOOK REVIEW: This book follows Brandi and a group of young people who were given extraordinary gifts/powers from the gods as they blur the lines between loyalty to the divine and loyalty to country. It explores black spirituality and what it means to be gifted but not free. Highly recommend! 4/5 ⭐️ #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #indieauthors #writingcommunity #amwriting Grab a copy: amzn.to/3WxUGVS

  14. @nptrainor exactly. & when we are given stories about the everyday person pushing back against societies “heroes”, those cops/military/politicians are always taken to the furthest edges of evil so that we don’t recognize their real world counterparts. I want stories where the bad cop/senator is not just the bad guy, but a representative of a system where they are the standard. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #amwriting #writingcommunity #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

  15. Is it just me, or do a lot of authors and directors give us stories about “heroes” who are just an honest look at how much freedom our public officials (cops, military, etc) actually have to exert power over us without consequence if they can conjur up a good enough reason? 👀 should we talk more about this? #boostodon #blackbookstodon #bipocauthors #amwriting #indieauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing #diversity

  16. Anyone else meeting a lot of journalists on here? Like, way more than your other platforms? I love getting your thoughts directly from you. (Also keep in mind a homeboy is always ready for his closeup. Look me up. 🤣). #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #bipocauthors #indieauthors #amwriting #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

  17. Now that I’ve shared the reason that I loved this book, let me offer it a critique. Let’s retire the “outside hero” trope. Our hero’s identity is valid! But she still swooped in from the outside as the only hope of her people. I want more stories that reinforce the strength of marginalized communities, not their need for outside heroes. Still a 4/5.

  18. Wings of Ebony has all of the non-negotiable elements of a YA fantasy but also offers the unique element of a main character that is unapologetically “hood”. The author never hides from her character’s origins or treats assimilation into whiteness as “character development”, which is sadly common in comparable stories. 4/5

  19. Imagine being raised to serve in one of most important roles in the Kingdom, but it comes at the cost of your identity. You are nothing but the job… until the best way you can serve that Kingdom is to find out who you really are and to betray your “purpose”. The Name Bearer is a story about identity, marginalization and the fight for personhood. 5/5.
