  1. Had a visitor at the brook this morning. At the end, it quickly stabs the water. Not sure if it got anything or not, but it sure looked impressive 🤭.

  2. In the past 36 hours we’ve received 3.75 inches of rain. You could probably go whitewater rafting right now if you didn’t mind hitting a large rock every 20 feet.

  3. Since yesterday afternoon, we’ve had 4+ inches of rain. That green chair is normally 8 feet from the edge of the brook. That tree is not usually in the water.

The brook has risen over 20 inches. Fortunately our house is on the side of the brook where the land is much higher.

Might be spending some time searching for that chair tomorrow.

  4. You are looking, and listening, to a very quiet place in the woods.

But Dan you say, I hear a very loud rush of water cascading through the forest.

Yes, BUT… it’s the ONLY place around where you don’t hear the “Cult of Cacophony,” otherwise known as the Louisiana Waterthrush, Ovenbird, and newly arrived Winter Wren.

    Be still my beating ears.

  5. With the melting snow and periodic rain, the brook has nearly reached the hefty carpet of moss that is covering a lot of the fallen tree.

  6. Moving version of yesterday’s Silent Sunday post.

  7. You know it’s snowing hard when It triggers the trailcam.

  8. The brook has been covered with snow since January. In the 8 winters we’ve been here that’s never happened for more than a few days. The running water below the snow was muffled. If you didn’t all ready know there was a brook under there you’d never suspect it.

We just got our first opening.

  9. With ~20 inches of snow forecast starting Sunday, today might be the last trip to this spot for a little while.

  11. Yesterday’s “Silent Sunday,” with movement and sound.

  12. When I got up this morning the brook was still about 75% covered with ice. Then the rain started and the temps are now at 55°F/13°C. You can see the yellowish ice under the surface as melting snow and rain rush over it. Large chunks of ice get dislodged and everything heads downstream.

  13. With an inch of rain and mid-50s forecast for Friday, I think the brook will be running loud and fast.

  14. At the edge, looking down into the brook below.

  15. Two sounds to differentiate - the clear trickle of this small stream in the woods where water bubbles up, and in the background the louder drone of the wooded brook where this water is headed.

  16. Off-trail amongst the large rock formations that seem to be around every corner in the woods of New England.

  17. The bear videos I’ve posted have either been via the trailcam or through a window from inside the house.

Not this one. Yesterday was a sweltering 96°F so I decided to cool off in the brook. From the other side I heard a grunt and then rumbling and mashing of twigs and leaves. Then I saw a furry head. Obviously, something else was looking to cool off in the brook. 😂

  18. Along the trail, there‘s a spot where ground water creates a small pool about the size of a placemat. There’s always this one froggo in it splashing and going at it like it’s the greatest place in the world.

    It now has a friend.

  19. When it’s 90° it’s nice to have a small friend who’ll share its rock in the middle of the brook.

  20. During a storm last year, we had a huge section of a hemlock snap off and fall directly atop the brook, creating a gnarly walkway for animals that might want to traverse it.

My wife and I began to see a pair of Gray Foxes go across, so I moved one of the trailcams to see if I might get a crossing in action.

    It didn’t take long. 🦊

  21. Ahhh, a morning visit from a Kingfisher. Nothing like being greeted with a cacophony of CLAAACK!!! and all-around general grumpiness.

But once it settles in, it’s all business.

  22. With this part of the US in drought every day of the past year, the ~3 inches of rain the last 72 hours has been needed. The brook has quickly risen and is several feet higher in places.

Turn up the volume for the sound of rushing freshwater.
