  6. ‘The ice is not freezing as it should’: supply roads to Canada’s Indigenous communities under threat from climate crisis

  7. Over-reliance on technology has dulled our senses and instincts. It has reduced our ability to intuit changes in our natural environment, detect danger and unusual situations.

I'm not sure if that is the reason but there seems to be more accidents from road conditions that are not that bad. I'm in Canada, fairly south but in the mountains. Even with climate change, the "on the ground" road conditions are mostly typical.

And yet, we have accidents happening that absolutely should not happen: single vehicle rollovers when the road is obviously icing up, fog pileups, intersection crashes at dusk, semis and dump truck involved crashes and the ever-present semis hitting over passes. These types of crashes are increasing, even with taking into account more traffic on the road.

Our province does a pretty good job keeping the pavement in good shape (comparatively magnitudes better than I experienced on the I-5 in the US). The ice and snow conditions have been worse for years since privatization came into being but this has been a long time and people should be expecting winter conditions in the winter. (!)

So, as I have said before, developing a heightened sense of situational awareness is absolutely imperative. It's not just about walking in a dark neighbourhood. It's about driving with care and attention, always expecting ice in the winter even on a black road, always assuming the other driver is not 100% and driving with complete defensiveness. Always drive under the speed you think is safe enough, always being aware of what and who is in your mirror, always knowing the condition and perimeters of your vehicle.

And ALWAYS have an emergency kit in your car for any situation that might arise.
Our health care is falling apart, it's harder and harder to get medical care for any reason. Don't let lack of care and attention while travelling be one of them.

  8. -3°C out there … there are warnings for all of South Sweden - roads are unsafe as it starts to first snow at noon and then from evening rain on very frozen roads. Before any salted sand is spread there will be a clear ice surface to tackle, more or less undectable (skating?)

Just in time for everyone that planned to travel. Good luck to you all!
