  1. Typst does 500 pages in 157 milliseconds. My own engine needs 4.4 seconds. So why would anyone use the slower tool?

    Because "how many pages per second" is the wrong question. The right question is "how many pages until you need a human to check."

    I wrote up the full benchmark with 6 PDF engines: news.speedata.de/2026/02/10/ty

  7. Last Wednesday, my fellow XPUB1 classmates and me wrapped up the trimester with a collective folding, binding, and paginating party to make A_Mazing Machine[s]: Wordscapes to Liberate Language, the printed publication of our Special Issue 28!

    My first few months at @xpub have been incredible. I am so proud of my classmates, the work we did together, and what we learned. I am also very grateful to our tutors, who have been super kind and inspiring!

    All information, plus a PDF of the printed version, made with WeasyPrint is available on this Eleventy website we created to share all the things that we explored. It mirrors our incredible, legendary wiki. It was very interesting and insightful, so I published my notes about Using MediaWiki as a CMS for Eleventy.

  13. 🚀️ Saltimbanque v1.2.2 released!

    Saltimbanque provides an HTTP API to convert Web pages to PDF using #WeasyPrint

    ➡️ github.com/wanadev/saltimbanqu

    This version brings official support for #Python 3.14 and replaces setup.py/setuptools by pyproject.toml/flit

  14. The new ebook plugin for Typemill has a remote service to generate PDFs and an aditional ebook theme with a fancy 2-column layout.

    The remote pdf generation is powered by #WeasyPrint now as an alternative to the browser based generation with #pagedjs

  18. @dbushell <3 now I don't have to remember the 210mm×297mm any more!

  24. New blog post: How to create TTRPG character sheets in HTML and CSS! This is my favorite way to create character sheets for games, because as a software developer, I'm just a huge text nerd. (I also use `entr` to make the rebuilding process completely painless).

    If you wanna make character sheets in pure text with HTML and CSS, then give this a read: thecloudtender.com/2025/01/21/

  25. The correlations between #typesetting engines to their #terminal text editors are irrefutable:

    * #TeXLaTeX is #emacs.
    * #SILE is #neovim.
    * #Typst is #helix.
    * #WeasyPrint is #nano.
    * #Speedata is #microeditor

    Now back to your regularly scheduled indentation.

  26. I've been experimenting with a #Markdown-to-#PDF-via-#HTML pipeline via #Pandoc and #WeasyPrint.

    Hey, #designers who rage over tiny accumulated differences in font metrics and layout algorithms? I feel you now.

  27. Wow, just found huge progress on #Weasyprint, a Python-based HTML-to-PDF converter. Last time I looked at it, it was sorely missing a bunch of current CSS support that we really wanted to use on a project -- things like CSS grid, paged media support for headers and footers, and a bunch of other things.

    Fast forward a few years, and it looks like all of that has been steadily incorporated, so it's past time for us to try it out again! Kudos to @courtbouillon for all the hard work!

  33. #html5lib replacements in #Python are going great. So far:

    #bleach vendored it (a while ago) and removed six
    #rdflib forked it into "html5rdf" project, removed six and vendored webencodings
    #WeasyPrint created its own #tinyhtml5 as a replacement

    But apparently nobody is interested in properly taking it over and maintaining going forward.

  38. Pandoc 3.4 has been released 🎉

  44. @rk the other two options would be #SILE and #typst.

    Other follow-ups groupings would also be mashups like #speedata / prince / etc. and browser tech options like #weasyprint / #pagedjs / etc.

    See also polytype.dev for some comparisons I was/am working on.
