  4. Sooooo I was driving and asked Siri to play my recently released album #Volatil. Spotify chose one of my favorite tracks, Mawün, and then played some fantastic music, all new to me, which made for a very happy drive.

If you're curious, here's what The Algorithm thinks my music sounds like: open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9

  10. #NewRelease #Volatil 30

Not a lot of energy today, so I kept it simple for this one. It's still nice to fulfill one's goals.

And I do like the guitar sound 🔉

  12. #NewRelease #Volatil 29

This one goes places. Downwards, to be specific.

I can't believe I managed to do all that in 3 hours. It's 4 different drum kits (well, 3 and a very electronic thing at the end). Every 8 bars (or was it 16?) the tempo decreases by a tiny bit. The bass also gets more and more distorted as it goes (also turns into an electronic thing at the end). Tons of fun to record.

  14. #Volatil 28, with the amazing @randulo 🎷!

Sometimes music's all about collaboration and friendship (it's Valentine's day! that was a coincidence btw). And weird time signatures, always weird time signatures.

I hope we can play together (in the traditional sense) sometime.

This one is a math experiment with slight hints of #BossaNova, the outgoing #GenreOfTheWeek.

Except for the electric guitar, everything is in repeating patterns, the length of which is a prime number. This guarantees that they only converge once (at the end). The lengths are:

    :marimba: - 13 beats
    :bass: - 17
    :tambourine: - 19
    :claves: - 23
    :drumset: - 29
    :acoustic_guitar: - 31

  18. #Volatil 26

    Last one of 2022!

Went back to making drum patterns. This time, I played for a long while and then selected 4 patterns that I liked, arranged them into a "song", and then recorded some effects automation over the whole track.

The bass track is 4 different takes. Basically, after improvising over the whole thing a bunch, I recorded until I messed up and only went back a bit each time. Worked pretty well, I think.

  20. #Volatil 14

This is the first time I tried recording a long drum take for a #Volatil song so, naturally, it sucked, and I was too tired to keep trying.

But I really like the rest of the song. At around 2:08 the first bass lick comes back after a long while of staying in a single note, and I think that's a cool moment (even if it was just a lucky accident while editing, I didn't actually play it like that).

  22. #Volatil 15, from a while back.

Not my best, I must admit.

One of the core ideas of this project is to just release the thing, even if I'm not particularly enjoying it; do my best with the editing, and leave it. Being comfortable with sucking in public, so to speak (not to be confused with being an *asshole* in public, which too many people are doing these days).

  24. Last year I found a way to integrate it into my routine.

Every two weeks, my productive-dad-mode goes "out of service" for a few hours, and I sit down to record new music. No plans, just shower-induced inspiration, and I force myself to package it and release it into the world without much editing (I also record myself on video and capture the computer screen, and do some rough video editing).

The project is called #Volatil, and after 25 iterations it's still going strong.

Somewhat simpler, but I kinda like it. Basically, I'm trying a new guitar effect plugin that they successfully marketed to me for #BlackFriday. Because I'm weak.

Also, it's the first time I record without the click, so I had to cheat (moved some of the bass notes so they matched the guitar a little bit better).

  28. Here it is! #Volatil 24.

This one was, to be quite honest, a struggle. I had this idea of playing a single 9/16 bar on the #drums, letting it repeat (1-bar delay), and then playing again. It was *so much harder* to get right than I'd anticipated.

The #guitar part was hard, too. It's not that complicated, but I guess I was just tired after ~2.5 hours (have I mentioned I record these in single uninterrupted improvisation sessions?)

  30. Meet @vicentebravocabezas, my baby brother.

Here he is playing the #guitar, the #triangle, #singing very weirdly, and also (off-camera) #mixing the hell out of this #Volatil piece:

Here's the 18th #Volatil piece from a few months ago. The #TimeSignature is crazy (11 beats in groups of 6 and 5, with the bass marking them as clearly as I could, but then some bars have 12 beats to spice things up).

I was also experimenting with my new #ElectricGuitar. I'm not much of a player so it took quite a few tries to get something semi-decent.

Oh, and another part was the chord progression. I used that new "Chord Sequencer" thing in #Reason to help me do it.

  34. #introduction #Programmer by day, #Musician by night. Dad to two beautiful girls, all the time.

Currently doing #Volatil, a mostly #instrumental #music project where I try to make a piece of not-too-polished, #experimental music manifest every two weeks. With it, I've learned new stuff and played with different instruments, effects, and ideas. I may or not be compiling the best pieces from this year into an album.

I also maintain a #TIL blog with software development tips. And this server!

  38. #Volatil

Here's my latest music thingy. It started with this idea of adding really heavy guitar distortion effects on the drums, which made everything sound muddy really fast. I spent a long time tweaking the parameters until, hopefully, you can actually hear what's being played.

    youtube.com/watch?v=h2A033h1fL

I also liked that organ bass sound, I think it's the first time I've used it. Sounds very "deep".
