"The vocal folds can vibrate in four different mechanisms.
M0: ‘creak’ or ‘vocal fry’
M1: women: ‘chest’ register; men: normal voice
M2: women: ‘head’ register; men: ‘falsetto’ register
M3: ‘whistle’ or ‘flageolet’ register
There is usually a pitch and intensity range over which singers can use either M1 or M2, and trained singers are good at disguising the transition. Sometimes, as in yodeling, the transition is a feature."
