@cambraca just found this.
Kinda a shame, but I agree it's better to let it go than to force it.
So long, #GenreOfTheWeek

It's been close to 50 weeks of #GenreOfTheWeek awesomeness, and I'm extremely grateful for all who have been involved in it. However, it's become more and more difficult for me to maintain the project so I've been thinking about stopping.
If anyone is interested in picking it up, I can commit to keeping the archive up-to-date (at https://info.musicians.today/genre-of-the-week). Is anyone interested? I think it's OK to let it die, too; all good things eventually do.

#GenreOfTheWeek #LoFi #TheApplesInStereo
The band is largely a product of lead vocalist/guitarist/producer Robert Schneider, who writes the majority of the band's music and lyrics.
Their sound draws comparisons to the psychedelic rock of The Beatles & The Beach Boys during the 1960s, as well as to bands such as Electric Light Orchestra & Pavement, and also draws from #LoFi, garage rock, new wave, R&B, bubblegum pop, power pop, punk, electro-pop & experimental music.

Apparently Doom Metal is the genre of the week!
Doom is my favourite music genre by far, and I could post recommendations all day.
However, I'll show some restraint and recommend just one of my favourites: Cirith Ungol by Reverend Bizarre.
https://youtu.be/lFCIITJcXGk?si=3zuqbO60PTbReaJT
It's a haunting song about the Ringbearer's journey to Mordor.

@evan very nice, thx for sharing. I'm really liking the chill mood on this one (also, great transition at around 0:58).

If I'm lucky I'll be in Mendoza, Argentina at the end of January. Looking forward to all the alfajores.

It is way too late to choose the next #GenreOfTheWeek!

🔊 #NowPlaying "Children's Story" (see what I did there?) by Slick Rick, from 1988, which is NOT "like 12 years ago" anymore.
#GenreOfTheWeek is #UKRap a.k.a. #BritishHipHop a.k.a. #BritHop

Here's one of my wife's favorites with a really catchy melody. Between the two we built quite a large Spotify playlist which made the subscription cost more than worth it for many years.

Can't end the week without posting this annoying, annoying track. Makes you wanna punch yourself in the face, but is somehow also hilarious and never gets old. I am sorry. 😆

Here's one from Ecuador, with a distinctly Andean vibe. I played this a fair number of times as my girls grew.

Going way back down memory lane... As a kid in Chile, I used to watch this TV show character, "Pin Pón". I'm learning now (Wikipedia) that the actor who created him in '68 was exiled in '74, lived in Ecuador (!) where he did a version of the show for a local station, then moved to Cuba, and finally returned to Chile in '90 after democracy was restored. He continued the show in the iteration I'm familiar with.

Latin dictatorships, man.

Another classic kid's song, but with a punk twist.
Love this version. Short and sweet.
NOFX - Champs Elysees

This is from my own childhood.
A whole bunch animals get together to play a symphony under the ocean. There's lots of instrument noises and fun, but a deaf whale smashes the whole thing.
Luckily the animals are ready to get back to their music very quickly.

🔊 #NowPlaying "La cuncuna amarilla" ("the yellow caterpillar" in Chilean Spanish) by Mazapán
My mom used to sing this to me, endlessly, whenever I was sick as a child, and I did the same with my girls. Good song.

New to me but already in love with it.
Merja Soria - Nuku nuku (Ancient Finnish Lullaby)

From 'Stay Awake' - vintage Disney songs made by other people. 'Baby Mine' by Bonnie Raitt, was originally in the film 'Dumbo.' 🐘

Here's one from the Little One's mum. Also in Japanese.
Quite a gentle, sweet song about rain and a little bear in a mountain.

#VenaCava is a live performance album released in 1993 by #AvantGardeMusic #ExperimentalMusic artist #DiamandaGalas
She attracted attention particularly for her voice – a soprano #Sfogato – and written accounts that describe her work as original and thought-provoking refer to her as "CAPABLE OF THE MOST UNNERVING VOCAL TERROR" 📢 listen @ 2:40 !
Here's an excerpt I think is just fantastic. It includes #AmazingGrace and #InHeavenThereIsNoBeer

#genreoftheweek #ThroatSinging
This isn’t throat-singing as such but throat-singers do #PolyphonicSinging #OvertoneSinging
One of my students once confessed that one of the only things he remembered from a psychoacoustics class I ran was me singing overtones but this video is a different level entirely.

@romanalanwrites @cambraca I hope we don't skip the fact that disco is a dance genre. Too often, the physicality of dancing gets left out of the analysis and enjoyment of the music.
For instance the 12" cut of I feel love, by Donna summer is inherently tied to the act of dancing, in a club, to this incredible track.
Imagine sweating it out on the dancefloor for 8 minutes. It's ecstasy, in a song

And you can't have a #BigBand #GenreOfTheWeek without some #CountBasie either. Here's a laid-back blues that could be a trio or quartet recording for the first couple minutes, just delicious walking bass, and #Basie's restrained piano, swinging effortlessly with a plink here and there in just the right places. But you know it's coming... the riffs start sneaking in, and by 2:30 or so, you've got the full-on ton-of-bricks blast that nobody did better than the Basie band.

as a Gen Z, i definitely missed out growing up in the 80s and 90s and experiencing, #synthwave music
thanks to the artists today that are still making synthwave, there is a lot in this genre to look forward to

You knew it would happen sooner or later... three of my favorites (#Cowboy, #Yodeling, #Polka) combined into one post...
Here it is!#KennyRoberts - "The Yodel Polka"
There's something new, something hot, something you haven't heard a lot.
When oh it's something you will like
It's the #Yodel PolkaYou don't need a #Saxophone, a #Clarinet, or #SlideTrombone
Just clear your throat for a nice good tone
And sing the Yodel PolkaYou're welcome!

According to Wikipedia (though there's a "citation needed" on this part), this is the first postwar recording to use the term "klezmer" to refer to the music.
🔊 #NowPlaying "Thalassa" (1977) by The Klezmorim.
To me, it sounds very, very similar to something I shared during #RomaniMusic week: https://youtu.be/-YO68M79B5o. Does anyone know how the two are related?

The band were part of the 1970s British folk revival, and were commercially successful in that period, with four Top 40 albums and two hit singles: "Gaudete" and "All Around My Hat".

🔊 #NowPlaying "Crazy Yodel" (c. 1935!) by Harry Torrani a.k.a. Harry Hopkinson, a.k.a. Austin Layton 🤷.
To some, the world's greatest yodeler.
-
"The vocal folds can vibrate in four different mechanisms.
M0: ‘creak’ or ‘vocal fry’
M1: women: ‘chest’ register; men: normal voice
M2: women: ‘head’ register; men: ‘falsetto’ register
M3: ‘whistle’ or ‘flageolet’ register
There is usually a pitch and intensity range over which singers can use either M1 or M2, and trained singers are good at disguising the transition. Sometimes, as in yodeling, the transition is a feature."
(from: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/voice.html#mechanisms)

Re: pop singers, Wikipedia says this song has yodeling (I guess around 2:15 🤨), "combined with heavy use of auto-tune".
🔊 #NowPlaying "Cannibal" by Kesha
Definitely not what I had in mind when I added #Yodeling to the #GenreOfTheWeek poll.

AND, not exactly musical....
Tarzan Yell (and Jane too) - a fine technical example of yodeling. -
