  1. THEY DO WHAT?? 😮

"Rice plants and share something in common that was not scientifically documented until recently. Using a faint smell to lure caterpillars into a trap, rice plants killed early-stage fall armyworm larvae by trapping them in a spikelet, the part at the end of a rice panicle where individual grains develop."

  6. The second part of the Venus Flytrap seed harvest for 2025 is done. The plant(s) they are from are outdoors on a balcony in growing zone 7b. The original plant was divided early spring and this is the most seeds I have ever seen from it.

  7. Whew. I have repotted this exact Venus Flytrap (it started as a single one a few years ago) several times now into larger pots, but this was the first repotting with division as it needed it. I thought it was still dormant (it wasn't). The rhizomes look very healthy and so does the rest of the plant but it might be set back a bit this year, so not totally sure yet if they will still flower this season.

  8. Outdoor over-wintering some of the carnivorous plants in growing zone 7b Germany has been a bit stressful at times this year, especially with some -10 C nights but they seem to be hanging in there so far, even the smaller ones. Once or twice a week I open the portable greenhouses to let in fresh air.

  9. I suspect that #antimicrobial #plastic might be killing my #venusflytraps and #pitcherplants. Thought I’d use some trays that formerly contained raw chicken breast for “tray system”watering, only to watch previously healthy plants suddenly shrivel and die. I’m guessing they are leaching something like #triclosan or silver nano-particles into the water and stunting root formation.

Anyone else experience this or similar problems starting seeds in reclaimed plastic packaging?

  10. A quick sign I painted up for my poly tunnel. I have far too many #Venusflytraps & not enough space lol. I think most #gardeners have the same problem #gardening #carnivorousplants #art

  11. Fascinating. Pitcher plants (and Venus fly traps) fluoresce blue light in the UV range to help trap insects.

"It would appear that many carnivorous pitcher plants are tapping into a strong evolutionary connection between insects and flowers."

  12. I'm obviously concerned about the impact of Hurricane #Florence on human lives but I'm also worried about the effects of oceanic storm surge and polluted flood waters on the remaining natural populations of #VenusFlytraps. Their range is limited to about a dozen mostly coastal counties in the Carolinas and the plants are very sensitive to salts and other impurities in their water.
