Bog report. Seedlings were all a little damaged by the moss, but the weakest seedling, a round leaf sundew, is still managing to open and the largest flytrap now has enough energy to raise its leaves from the moss, and a tiny trap is opening (might catch a springtail). No signs of color on the pitchers (except the one that came with color), but the largest with the damaged leaves only lost one leaf fully, can photosynthesize, and some unidentified things are up.

Second part of the Venus Flytrap seedling transfer preparation, the bog looks good. I haven't water germated like this before but I think the seedlings are ok, at least they are still alive. I am using #guvcview for the magnifier capture and soldering clamps to keep it in place while #livebogging :)

The first seedlings from the 2026 Venus Flytrap harvest are ready to plant. I water germinated them this time and it seems to have worked. I think I will put them in the bog. The last stalk with seed pods is still attached and should be ready to pull in a few days.

Found this pitcher plant at the nursery the other day. It’s in a six inch pot. It’s freaking enormous. Tag says sarracenia purpurea but that seems unlikely given that it’s green with veins (like the hulk). It could eat frogs. THE LIP. What did they feed this thing…

They are sensitive to disturbance. There is research that suggests that harvesting of peat bogs adds to climate change by releasing carbon stored in these bogs.
"Peat bogs and fens in America are where #CarnivorousPlants, like #sundews, #bladderworts and #PitcherPlants, and #BogOrchids live side-by-side. The acidic nature of bogs/fens and humidity create the perfect environment for peat moss, orchids and carnivorous plants. #Peatlands are also home to other species that rely on their composition. #Turtles, birds such as #PalmWarblers and #EasternTowhees, #snakes and #grouse, to name a few.
"There are alternatives to peat moss that are more sustainable. #CocoCoir is a material made from the fibers of the coconut husk. When dried, it is packaged into bricks.
