Nepenthes are carnivorous plants under the order of Caryophyllales, making them loosely related to cacti and carnations, but also the other common carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps and sundews. There are many other plants that have learned to eat insects that aren't related though. When this happens, we call the process convergent evolution. This year I am trying mesh bags over the Venus Flytrap flower stalks while the seed pods do their thing so hopefully the seeds stay together when the pods open up. The 2023 and 2024 generation's plantings are doing well and I just started a small germination (indoors) from the 2025 collection. These live outdoors year-round on a southern facing balcony in growing zone 7b (Germany).

So, even if some peat (Canadian peat) is allegedly harvested *sustainably*, I'm thinking this article lays out the problems with using #Peat succinctly and without the hype!

They are sensitive to disturbance. There is research that suggests that harvesting of peat bogs adds to climate change by releasing carbon stored in these bogs.
"Peat bogs and fens in America are where #CarnivorousPlants, like #sundews, #bladderworts and #PitcherPlants, and #BogOrchids live side-by-side. The acidic nature of bogs/fens and humidity create the perfect environment for peat moss, orchids and carnivorous plants. #Peatlands are also home to other species that rely on their composition. #Turtles, birds such as #PalmWarblers and #EasternTowhees, #snakes and #grouse, to name a few.
"There are alternatives to peat moss that are more sustainable. #CocoCoir is a material made from the fibers of the coconut husk. When dried, it is packaged into bricks. It can be used in the potting mix or on top of the soil instead of mulch. #RiceHulls can be used for drainage in container plant pots. Both coco coir and rice hulls are sustainable. Additionally, #compost can be used in place of peat moss. Coco coir, rice hulls and compost can all be used alone or mixed in with a commercial potting mix to make using peat moss more sustainable."

The second part of the Venus Flytrap seed harvest for 2025 is done. The plant(s) they are from are outdoors on a balcony in growing zone 7b. The original plant was divided early spring and this is the most seeds I have ever seen from it.

Whew. I have repotted this exact Venus Flytrap (it started as a single one a few years ago) several times now into larger pots, but this was the first repotting with division as it needed it. I thought it was still dormant (it wasn't). The rhizomes look very healthy and so does the rest of the plant but it might be set back a bit this year, so not totally sure yet if they will still flower this season.

Outdoor over-wintering some of the carnivorous plants in growing zone 7b Germany has been a bit stressful at times this year, especially with some -10 C nights but they seem to be hanging in there so far, even the smaller ones. Once or twice a week I open the portable greenhouses to let in fresh air.
