  1. This is Max. Max is a traveling venus fly trap; he vacations on a sailboat in Georgian Bay. He comes for the delicious clear waters and a bug or two.

  2. Nepenthes progressions 2021-2026

Nepenthes are carnivorous plants under the order of Caryophyllales, making them loosely related to cacti and carnations, but also the other common carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps and sundews. There are many other plants that have learned to eat insects that aren't related though. When this happens, we call the process convergent evolution. Two different species, with the same selective pressures, ended up evolving similar systems to overcome those pressures. Think of bats and birds […]

  3. Stepping up the hustle for my live bog plant model fund. Offering direct trade of live 5 leaf clover cuttings for live sphagnum moss or potted #carnivorousPlants, just took a bunch of new cuttings. Will also sell pages of the zine as a coloring poster on Bristol paper. See thread.

  4. More orchid hunting today, but this #sundew stole the show. I think it’s a tall sundew (Drosera auriculata)

  5. Hey, #bloomscrolling, how would you like an intricate tour of one of nature’s most fascinating flowers, the labyrinth of the pitcher plant bloom? I also break down the way this carnivorous beauty hunts insects, along with a gallery of their lovely, flowery looking deadly traps. Check it out on YouTube :)

  6. Last week I was working on a project when my keyboard died. To celebrate my new keyboard, here's a few pics from what I'm working on, a video about carnivorous pitcher plants :).

  7. Species of pitcher plants and several unrelated lineages independently have evolved pitcher-shaped traps.

  8. @ClimateJenny Fine, you convinced me, I'll dig out a few more, including a mantis nymph. The mother laid 3 ootheca on my patio so her babies could be born near an all you can eat buffet. So many babies in my yard that spring :).

Now I want to know if there's a word for that, predators that steal from predators.

  9. The sundew plant looks very delicate, but this is a trap. Those sparkling droplets are not morning dew. They're morning glue.

  10. Found this little guy in my quest for photos for the next project. Turns out, carnivorous plants don't just attract prey insects, the predators come in to steal from the plants. There was always a spider in my bog plants, at least one.

  11. Cape Sundew (Drosera capensis) in flower. Native to the Cape region of South Africa, this sundew is one of the easiest carnivorous plants to grow, and is almost impossible to kill (I've tried). It is so prolific that it is considered a weed in commercial carnivorous plant nurseries.

  12. Bladderworts may be the fastest predator that you've never heard of. The trap of a bladder wart fires in milliseconds. That's not just fast for a plant. That's fast for anything.

  13. Today's project involves digging through my stash of carnivorous plant photos, so I present an alternate ending to yesterday's visual silent Sunday story.

  14. Researchers have shown that Venus fly traps use action potentials remarkably similar to the principle of electrical signals in an animal nervous system... but with no brain?

  15. I switched servers just under a week ago so I figured I should do a proper #Introduction post. I’ve been on Mastodon since 2017 but never actually written a proper intro!

My name’s Sally Monster (she/her) and I’m a British northerner who immigrated to Southern California a bit over a decade ago because I fell for guy named Viss on Flickr after he posted a photo of a #HalfLife HeadCrab he made out of bread!

I’m a bit of a #KitchenWitch at heart; sharing #Food with people I love gives me a sense of wellbeing. I believe wholeheartedly in BenGingi’s motto, “We are all bread.”

I’m happiest when I have soil under my finger nails, I have a favorite tree, I talk to birds, I chase creepy crawlies and I love growing weird and wonderful #Plants especially #CarnivorousPlants and #SpicyPeppers.

I’m into #Art, #Painting, #Drawing and #Photography and will post pictures often of the things that I love. I have all sorts of random collections and obsessions; #Dinosaurs, robins, #Radiohead, #Monsters, the colour green, #JurassicPark, #Cookbooks, #TheVentureBros, #Ghost, #GothicHorror, #FolkTales, cassowaries …you get the picture.

I love it here on Mastodon. I have met so many amazing people here and I am so grateful for this community. Sending love and hugs out to all of you. 💚 🧡
