  1. CW: UKpol: John Harris on today's white paper on special educational needs (SEND)

John Harris gives a critical assessment of the Starmer government's white paper on children with special educational needs (SEND), published today. Some positive aspects, many concerns. Good to see his assessment laid out in some detail: he never speaks without reason.

  2. I've made it through another term at the coalface, and I'm so, so tired. I have a heap of marking that I should have done but haven't, as always. I just think, fundamentally, in teaching - we need more prep time and less contact time. 10% is not enough. I feel that statement needs those obnoxious clapping hands, but I'll resist. What is it in other countries...? #Education #Teaching #Teachers #UKSchools #SecondarySchools #edutooter @edutooters

  3. UK government boasting about how they’ve improved schools.

Fact: primary class sizes are now the highest in Europe, secondary class sizes are the highest since records began almost 50 years ago.

That’s definitely an improvement, isn’t it?

  4. Could it be perhaps that growing inequality caused by ongoing austerity, Brexit and the pandemic could in fact be some of the leading root causes for ongoing attendance issues in English schools?

"In one case, a mentor found a girl was not attending school because she had to share her only pair of shoes with her mother – meaning she could not go to school if her mother needed to wear shoes that day."

  5. I do genuinely worry about what things will be like when my little one starts school. The systems of oppression that have sprung up with the rise of academies are not, in the long run, going to lead to heathy, well-rounded people.

"What’s behind the rise in school absence rates?"
