  1. CW: UKpol: John Harris on today's white paper on special educational needs (SEND)

John Harris gives a critical assessment of the Starmer government's white paper on children with special educational needs (SEND), published today. Some positive aspects, many concerns. Good to see his assessment laid out in some detail: he never speaks without reason.

  6. CW: UK schools: John Harris on threats to special educational needs provisions (SEND)

Excellent (if sobering) piece by the Guardian's John Harris on the forthcoming legislation on the reform of SEND provision for children with special educational needs (in England).

Signs are that behind all the big nice words, Keir Starmer's Labour ultimately wants to cut costs, weaken state or school accountability, and remove parental agency.

This debate deserves our attention. If you are in the UK (in England, specifically), write to your MP and tell them to speak up!

  11. CW: John Harris on Wes Streeting and the "overdiagnosis" trope

"Why is our health secretary picking over the number of diagnoses, when he could be focusing on why our systems of work, education and care are still so closed off to the people who get them?"

The ever-excellent John Harris dissects the nasty "overdiagnosis" trope, currently promoted by Wes Streeting and our nightmare Labour government. His style is calm and balanced, but I can feel the underlying rage.

  16. CW: UK politics: John Harris on the "squeezed middle"

The always-interesting John Harris writes in the Guardian about the increased squeeze on the "squeezed middle" in today's Britain, and how the Labour government has given up on this ever larger part of society.

As someone supporting a two-children family on a single academic salary, I know what it means to be of the squeezed middle.

My objections to the current Labour government are based on broader political concerns, but I certainly share the experience of being abandoned economically, and of seeing my daughters' futures written off.

  21. CW: UKpol: John Harris on what happens with the England Flag

The Guardian's ever excellent John Harris on how the British far-right managed to appropriate the England flag (the St George's Cross) for their own dark politics, and how this enables Farage and his men to gain the trust of good people who are looking for a symbol of pride.

Can progressive culture re-kindle a spirit of democatic pride in our own country, a pride based on community not exclusion?

As everything written by John Harris, very much worth reading.

[My own take would be to see these developments in Gramscian terms as a hegemonic move by the far right: occupying cultural ground in preparation of the political takeover.]

  27. CW: UKpol, disability

"Labour’s collective belief in the dignity of labour regularly curdles into two toxic ways of thinking. One is a belief that paid employment is the only reliable gauge of people’s esteem; the other is a queasiness about disability that sometimes lurks just below the surface. There is also an apparently desperate need to counter any suggestion that Labour ministers are liberal fainthearts. In March, the justice secretary, Shabana Mahmood, offered a curt explanation of why the government was set on its plan: “This is the Labour party. The clue is in the name. We believe in work”."

  32. CW: Carers, Disability, Empathy, Ed Davey. A fine piece by John Harris.

John Harris is one of the few remaining true journalists. He talks to people, he listens, he reports. He also has an autistic son. He also is an empathetic person.

Here he writes about the complete failure of the UK system to manage the incredible work done by "carers", people who support family members who are disabled or need constant help for one reason or another. Not an easy read.

He also speaks about Ed Davey, the leader of the UK's (left of centre) Lib Dem party. Davfy had multiple personal involvements with Carer roles in his life. Very moving. I completely recalibrated my views about this politician. He's someone real and authentic.

  38. CW: UKpol: John Harris on Keir Starmer

"The tone suggests one of Stalin's five-year plans being fronted by Alan Partridge."

The Guardian's John Harris always produces perceptive and incisive analyses, always worth reading. Here he looks at the deep void at the heart of Keir Starmer's politics.

A visionless man pre-occupied with personal power moves, hiding his lack of a real project behind a thoughtless obsession with an ill-fitting growth agenda.

A glum outlook for all of us.
