  1. I hate to be that person, but just imagine a school that was getting Ofsteded this week, in July, so close to the end of term, in a heatwave, after half of staff and students being up all night on Sunday. And after a Yr6 Transition Evening last night. Imagine that. So, whose school might that be...? #Education #ukeducation #SecondaryEducation #Ofsted #edutoot #Edutooters

  3. Just a massive congratulations to anyone in education - both staff and students - who got through this week in the UK. What a week. And with so, so much anti-teacher rhetoric in the media and online. We did our best. ☀️ #Teaching #SecondaryTeaching #Education #EduTooters #UKEducation

  7. Whilst it may be that some Universities in the UK have engineered their own problems here is a sobering quote from the OECD: “In Chile, only 47% of tertiary education expenditure comes from government sources, and in the United Kingdom, it is just 43%, the lowest across OECD and partner countries with data”.

    oecd.org/en/publications/educa

(The US spends, for example, about four times as much public money relative to GDP as we do on Higher Education BTW, twice as much if you include R and D spend).

That’s a governmental choice, driving the whole show. Combined with the cap on home UG fees and an unfriendly visa regime this isn’t a sustainable model for students or providers.

  9. Ah, the romance of conquest! Isn't in nice to teach 8-year-olds to identify with the Empire, at school? BBC has already made such cool beat for that.

    > ♫
    > We're known for our ability
    > To conquer lands that others call home
    > And claim their countries as our own.
    > We're Romans! We're Romans!
    > We're rocking and we're rolling, we're the Romans!

  21. CW: UK schools: John Harris on threats to special educational needs provisions (SEND)

Excellent (if sobering) piece by the Guardian's John Harris on the forthcoming legislation on the reform of SEND provision for children with special educational needs (in England).

Signs are that behind all the big nice words, Keir Starmer's Labour ultimately wants to cut costs, weaken state or school accountability, and remove parental agency.

This debate deserves our attention. If you are in the UK (in England, specifically), write to your MP and tell them to speak up!

Reading that an English school dropped "The Hate U Give" from a reading list because of one complaint from a parent made me both sad and angry; sad, because of the importation of US conservative culture war tactics, and angry, because the school folded so easily.

Nevertheless, I also felt unhappy about the school's choice of book in the first place. Of course children in the 95 % "white British" town of Weymouth need to read about race and racism, but can't the school find something by a Black British author?

Without denying the global importance of African American culture, can we not also recognize that Black writing and culture in general is not just that of Black people in the USA?

  32. All well and good this list existing, describing tasks teachers shouldn't do, but school funding continues to be eroded by inflation and below inflation budget increases, and as such the first staff to disappear are support staff. I've seen it across all the schools I work with.

So, who exactly will do some of these tasks?

Without proper funding, this list is just a wishlist.
