CW: UK schools: John Harris on threats to special educational needs provisions (SEND)
Excellent (if sobering) piece by the Guardian's John Harris on the forthcoming legislation on the reform of SEND provision for children with special educational needs (in England).
Signs are that behind all the big nice words, Keir Starmer's Labour ultimately wants to cut costs, weaken state or school accountability, and remove parental agency.
This debate deserves our attention. If you are in the UK (in England, specifically), write to your MP and tell them to speak up!

I don't want the UK to be further sucked in to the US led campaign against China, but stuff like this obstructs efforts to tamp down Sinophobia.

Reading that an English school dropped "The Hate U Give" from a reading list because of one complaint from a parent made me both sad and angry; sad, because of the importation of US conservative culture war tactics, and angry, because the school folded so easily.
Nevertheless, I also felt unhappy about the school's choice of book in the first place. Of course children in the 95 % "white British" town of Weymouth need to read about race and racism, but can't the school find something by a Black British author?
Without denying the global importance of African American culture, can we not also recognize that Black writing and culture in general is not just that of Black people in the USA?

UK government boasting about how theyโve improved schools.
Fact: primary class sizes are now the highest in Europe, secondary class sizes are the highest since records began almost 50 years ago.
Thatโs definitely an improvement, isnโt it?

I don't often point to things published by my employers, but this tribute written by my boss to the late Professor Sir Tim Brighouse is very well worth a read

All well and good this list existing, describing tasks teachers shouldn't do, but school funding continues to be eroded by inflation and below inflation budget increases, and as such the first staff to disappear are support staff. I've seen it across all the schools I work with.
So, who exactly will do some of these tasks?
Without proper funding, this list is just a wishlist.

As a parent, Iโm dismayed when I hear adverts on the radio telling me to send my children to school if they feel ill and have symptoms of coronavirus or other infections. Attendance trumps eveything.
I remember the heady days of the lockdowns when everyone looked forward to a time when viruses were taken seriously and there would be less pressure on people to work when they are ill.
Sadly, we need to teach the child-working-stock to ignore their and othersโ health and learn to obey the dictates of the workplace. (And that adult workers MUST send their children to school whatever their health so that the parents can fulfil their roles as wage-slaves.)
What is it 1-in-20 have coronavirus presently in the UK and more of the population are struggling with other infectious illnesses? The bosses require your labour for their money-making. Teach the young ones that from the age of 4.

Could it be perhaps that growing inequality caused by ongoing austerity, Brexit and the pandemic could in fact be some of the leading root causes for ongoing attendance issues in English schools?
"In one case, a mentor found a girl was not attending school because she had to share her only pair of shoes with her mother โ meaning she could not go to school if her mother needed to wear shoes that day."

I do genuinely worry about what things will be like when my little one starts school. The systems of oppression that have sprung up with the rise of academies are not, in the long run, going to lead to heathy, well-rounded people.

Disappointing that none of the news programmes have explained how the โcomparable outcomesโ exam grading works. Exams in the UK are a sorting hat not a rating against an absolute standard. Clearly unfair to score this yearโs cohort who lost GCSE to pandemic against pre-covid cohorts #ukeducation #ukedchat #alevel
