If the person has truly transitioned and is portrayed that way, it is not perpetuating the "trap" trope. To avoid confusion, that person should not be involved in fraud or other scams. Try to seduce or make sexual advances on the POV character, unless they have cleared the air.
Instead, this is a normalizing statement that says, "You never know who might be trans."

It has taken me a long time to find a voice for an MC trans narrator. I have had trans SCs but my WIP is the first where the narrator MC isn't cis.
There were several reasons.
1. There are parts of life as trans that I prefer not to dwell on. The fear, otherness, the need to always be looking over your shoulder. And I am not the kind of author who glosses over these things. My stories don't take place in Avalon.
2. I write romances and sexuality is messy for a lot of us. It certainly has been for me.
3a. Not wanting to have to prove I had a right to write trans characters. I am an open trans, but generally don't talk much about it. And of course reasons 1 and 4.
3b. Fear of being challenged about how "genuine" my character is. I have already received a polite question about the fact my MC is a butch transfem.
4. Fear of backlash from the haters. There are places I used to promote my stories that I have dropped now that my MC is trans for this very reason. There is that looking-over-your-shoulder stuff again.
6. And yes it's easy. I don't have to explain things. I don't have to worry am I under or over-explaining things.

My criteria for favorites is easier to talk about. There are "objectively" well constructed books, but to make it into my favorites list it's gotta have some personal appeal. Non-human minds, snow. Oh, and in retrospect, non gender conforming vibes.

“And it’s not because I’m ‘such a good guy.’” Jules made exaggerated air quotes. “I know you think that’s all I care about, doing the ‘right thing,’ and I guess that ought to be a fucking compliment, but it just makes me feel like you think I don’t have my own stupid feelings like a normal stupid human being. I want to protect you because I fucking want to. I know I said that one time I’d never ask you for anything again, but I guess that was a lie, ’cause I asked you to help me with Max, and now I’m asking for this. And I think I’m entitled to it. ’Cause God knows, Rory Navarrete, you will never stop owing me. And if that’s not a good enough reason for you, then I guess you’re right—you’re not the person I thought you were.”
Rory was silent a moment, letting this soak in. “You really don’t think I’m a lost cause, huh?”
Jules’s only answer was a shrug.
“Just so you know,” said Rory, after a long pause, “this is a pretty weird not-friends thing we have going on here.”
Jules side-eyed him. “Human relationships aren’t always easy to define.”

“Fuck this. I don’t get why she’s your problem.”
“Because I fucking know what love is, you selfish prick.”
“What you know is how to spend every ounce of your energy trying to ‘rescue’ other people so you never have to deal with your own shit.”
“How’s this for dealing with my own shit: Get. Out.” Jules was red in the face, his eyes blazing coals. “You’ve done it again, you shithead—made me hate myself. Thanks for reminding me what a stupid asshole I was to think we could ever, ever, ever be friends again.”
Rory turned, made a beeline for the door.
“Rory…wait.” Suddenly Jules stood in front of the door, blocking Rory’s exit.
“Move,” said Rory.
“Make me.”
“What are we, in fucking eighth year again? Get out of my way.”
Jules stood with his back against the door, arms spread, palms against the wall on either side of the doorframe. A drooling glove of panchrest clung to his damaged hand, leaving scarlet smudges on the wall behind it. “Not gonna. Can’t make me.”
“Your fucking hand, you moron.”
“You go sit the fuck back down and I will too.”
“Fuck,” exploded Rory, and did as he was told.
Jules joined him at the table, resubmerged his hand in the panchrest bowl.
They sat in sullen silence for several minutes.
“You are one stubborn motherfucker,” said Rory finally.

Jules crawled into bed close beside her, braving the perpetual breath of ice that rose from her chest, the familiar, queasy magnetism of the void.
She stirred, made a sound. He enfolded her, sighed at the sensation of her kisses on his neck. “Hey,” he whispered. “How you feeling?”
He could hear the grin in her voice as she fondled his backside. “Real good now.”
He smiled in spite of himself, rested his head against hers. “Can I ask you something random?”
“Anytime, podnah.”
She was in a good mood. Which just kind of made the whole thing that much worse. “Was your childhood…normal?”
Max gave a faint snort. “Dude. What even is normal?”
“Dunno.” Jules stroked her back, kissed her hair. “Just wondering if you ever felt weird as a kid. Or, like…if your family was weird.”
“I mean, duh. You know me. I was a total fruit bat. All the kids at school hated me.”
Jules laughed, cuddled her closer—swallowed the lump in his throat. “Really?”
“Chyeah, dude. I was a freak and a half. I always made up these nonsense song-and-dance numbers. I had this sailor dress in third grade that I wore to school every day for like a month. One time I stole my mom’s eyebrow pencil and started drawing freckles on my face every day ’cause I was obsessed with Pippi Longstocking. I was such a dork. Nobody wanted to be seen with me. I was a total pariah.”
“I…can’t even picture you in a dress. I mean, you’d look great in one, but you know.”
“Yeah. I’m a lot less flamboyant these days. Don’t like people looking at me as much anymore. Go figure.”
Jules kissed her. “We would’ve gotten along.”
“You think so? You, preppy rich kid, and me, incorrigible clown?”
“What makes you think I was preppy?”
“Dude. I’ve seen your old clothes.”
“Point. No, I know I would have liked you. I mean, Rory was the last person you would’ve thought I’d be friends with, but…yeah.”
“Rory’s kind of like me on steroids.”
“Yikes that comparison.”
“Sorry.”
Jules held her closer, sighed. He wanted more than anything to just keep rambling on wherever the conversation took them. Have one of their giddy all-nighters, talk about all the stupid things they would have done together as kids in some awesome otherworld where their spheres had overlapped sooner and for wildly different reasons.
Unfortunately, he’d come here tonight with a purpose.

Now that his alchemical tattoos are completed and active, Jules uses them to shortcut this process by microanalyzing matter in his environment until he arrives at the level of "prima materia," the mystical substrate of all being, which manifests to his inner senses as visions of mandalas and the sound of soaring arpeggios (and we see him do this also in Ch. 18, linked above, after a harrowing run-in with his now-ex, Hunter, at Elisha's party).
Rory has struggled with substance addiction in the past—an escape he ends up seeking out again in Ch. 21: https://readformandvoid.com/the-nullweaver-cycle/those-who-create-and-destroy/chapter-twenty-one/ . He arrived at the dais, on which the council table loomed. Climbed the steps and turned, taking in the expanse of the gallery. Pictured the host of magi in their formal colors who would soon pack the chamber.
/…I can’t do this./
Jules plopped down on the lip of the stage, legs pretzeled, and draped his wrists over his knees. His eyes again found the stars. He counted his breaths.
/But I can’t fucking back down now. If I run and hide this time, I’ll never—/
“Ha’iru.” Around the perimeter of the hall, sconces flared to life. “A tad early, aren’tcha, kiddo?”
Jules snapped his gaze studiously frontward, hoped the newcomer hadn’t been watching long enough to see the look of abject terror he’d probably had on his face seconds earlier.
“Getting a feel for the room?” The owner of the jaunty tenor proceeded down the aisle toward Jules, hands jammed in the pockets of his purple-on-gold vestments.
At least Jules’s unexpected company was a friendly face. “Prefect.” Jules got to his feet, paused awkwardly before registering that he’d been asked a question. “Yeah…I suppose so.”
“Managed to totally psych yourself out yet?” Elisha Weyland, Grand Enchanter of the Enclave, Prefect of Ordo Arcanus North America, and the only son of Archmagus Levi Weyland, High Councillor of the Auctoritas Magicae, was a tall and youthful forty-two, clean-shaven, with a neat, short, wheat-gold head of hair. His black-on-black Armani tie played a flirtatious game of peekaboo over the neckline of his ceremonial garment.
“Getting there.” Jules managed a weak grin. “If you’d walked in five minutes later, you probably would’ve found me in a babbling puddle on the floor.”
“Oh, I doubt that.” The Prefect chuckled. “Cool as a cucumber—that’s the Jules Nimri m.o.”
Jules liked that perception of himself. He wished he shared it.
