  1. Yesterday I started researching the history of Transmeta and its Crusoe and Efficeon processor technology, namely LongRun and LongRun2. The research will end up in a talk for some future vintage computing events throughout Germany and/or Europe. #vintagecomputing #techhistory #transmeta

  2. I got my precious back, after 25 years! #SonyVaio #PCGC1 #PictureBook #Transmeta (mine was a UK 2nd Gen model, purchased new in year 2000, this is a Japanese 3rd Gen) #RetroComputing #RetroComputers

  3. A new background story on The Silicon Underground focuses on Transmeta's Crusoe CPU, an unusual processor from the early 2000s that competed with Intel with its energy-efficient design and later continued as an IP licence model. In the article, David L. Farquhar traces how Transmeta initially sought to score points in the market for mobile and energy-efficient systems with the Crusoe architecture, but later failed:

  4. Ah, #nostalgia for the days when burning 273 million dollars on a non-dotcom-but-still-dotcom IPO was considered "success." 🤷‍♂️ Thankfully, Transmeta’s grand plans were so potent they managed to outdo #vaporware with sheer absence! 💸💨

  5. @DosFox it’s Solo, a cancelled Transmeta SoC, which paired a Crusoe with peripherals including a graphics adapter. Alas, before we got it back Microsoft raised the Windows graphics requirements rendering it nonviable. A pair of energetic souls did bring it up to a Windows desktop, but that was the end of Solo. So tragic. (A check from Donald Knuth is photo bombing the corner)

  6. The most amusing thing: I do remember someone ranting at #Transmeta “they literally got the book and just implemented that” as a criticism of the original Crusoe VLIW. Now that I’ve seen VEX (“VLIW EXample”) I have to agree, that, yeah, Crusoe was extremely close to that plus extensions for atomic execution. Even the assembly syntax is near-identical. Of course Crusoe (or rather, P95), predates the book by a decade but surely he published most of the material prior to book.

  7. Another #3dprint case for a HP t5515 thin client #pc with a misspelling in the front and center! Laughing at your own mistakes makes life a little easier 😅 The disk drive and key lock are both fake. The spiral on the top left is the #transmeta Crusoe logo graphic. Good for #RetroGaming using actual hardware thanks to its small size, audio output and compatibility.

  8. So vor mich in gesurft und zack: nächste Idee für einen Talk am @vcfberlin und #VCFe: Transmeta Crusoe und Code Morphing. Wissta noch? #transmeta #vintagecomputing
