Pixelfed maker @dansup is working on a federated version of #TikTik in @loops. Historically, I haven’t been enthusiastic about content algorithms. Dan’s approach is making me reconsider. Like the instances themselves, the “For You” algorithm will be decentralized, so engagement control won’t go to a centralized authority with priorities that may be incompatible with instance owners and their users.

China made the law to block a sale of #TikTik and force #ByteDance eat the loss, “Beijing has passed laws that recommendation algorithms are subject to Chinese export controls.” The US proposed bill would not ban TikTok. It would force a sale. Neither would the bill limit American free speech. Instead, the bill would stop a foreign adversary from controlling American speech as it’s done many times with Daryl Morey and the #NBA, John Cena, #Apple, and others.

The US government is not intending to ban #TikTik. The consequences of a ban would be bad for both parties. The government’s intent is to force a sale by China owner ByteDance. This is nothing new. China was previously forced to sell dating app, Grindr. China does not allow American social media companies for fear they will exert narrative control. For China to call American concerns ridiculous that China would do the same, is itself ridiculous.

@thelinuxcast the two I'd recommend are #Anytype and #Logseq. Both are Open Source and local first.
But if you'd like something that's truly similar to #TikTik, then I'd recommend #ClickUp. It has apps for all main platforms, including Linux.
