I had yet another construction project manager tell me that the house lights don’t really matter to the show, so it's fine if they don’t dim properly or are the wrong colour. What do I know, right?

Drei Jahre mit #MECFS in der Familie. Jetzt kann ich so langsam wieder zum Theater fahren. Erstmal die arme, vernachlässigte Hardware putzen und Rechner updaten… 😢💪
Bald gehts los mit Bühnenbau! 🥳

Just had a request to justify in writing why we don’t recommend skylights in the auditorium of a theatre.

This video is doing the rounds this week and it is quite good, but I keep obsessing over the air vents right in the middle of the stage floor.

My kid just asked me a question about theatre lighting design.
I think I’ve done well.
(In particular, she asked: why do theatre shows have a trope of lighting the whole stage in blue, and then highlighting the main character in a yellowish colour?)

CW: Explains what’s funny:
For the uninitiated, the product is called “Colorsource V” in which the V is the letter V, not a Roman numeral.

A guy just called me to ask about the "Colorsource 5" fixtures on a project of mine. I suspect he may not be an authorized ETC dealer...

A few years ago I had a great time being able to share the nerdy details of my #sound mixing job at #Hamilton with #AdamSavage on #Tested. #TechTheatre #Theatre #TechTheater #Theater https://youtu.be/60OpF3DCVls?si=plcN_F11W5TOgDd3

Digico Quantum 852, in case you’re wondering.

On a much happier note, it's nice to feel like the move from performing to doing sound design for theater isn't just better for me mentally, but also making other people happy with my work. :)

Well, that was a pleasant surprise. The overhead mics were feedback central, but the body mics on the leads were smooth like butter right out of the gate. If I had 30 mics (and the inputs for them), I'd just throw them on the cast and say the heck with it, although the resulting radio cloud might be sufficient to cook the audience.

Wrestling with speaker placement to get a few wireless mics working for a musical in a fifty-seat cubic space. (I know, don't get me started on the necessity of mics in there...)
Having a sinking sensation I'm going to spend the weekend chasing feedback spikes...

(Although, looking at the alt-text, only one of those people actually coils cable.). 😀

Having wrapped off 'Ride the Cyclone', I'm now digging into sound setup for 'Cabaret' even though it doesn't start rehearsals until August, because I'm obsessive like that.
Now to figure out whether and how to mic up a nine-piece orchestra in a weirdly-shaped 300-seat space...

Is there anything more irritating in #TechTheatre than the hood/reflector and o-ring situation on Littlites?

Definitely having a debate with myself as we look towards planning the fall musical. On the one hand, I now have a beautiful, huge, Allen & Heath mixer that will be perfect for managing even a large(-ish) show with a sizeable pit and large amounts of onstage wireless.
On the other hand, having now done a show on a digital mixer, being able to use mute groups, one-click mic cue changes, and per-channel onboard compression and dynamics, I'm now completely spoiled for them.
On the third pseudopod, trying to purchase a digital mixer with enough channels to match the A&H is way out of the budget, and the idea of renting when we have a perfectly capable analog unit seems silly.
Decisions, decisions...

I like to be part of a sound department that easily and happily collaborates with other departments. One way is by providing this area at FOH for auditing by swings, resident staff, the music director, stage management, visiting creatives, etc. It's got power, chargers, a video shot of the conductor, and an aviom like in the pit. (There's usually also a desk lamp available but it's put away for now.) #Sound #Theatre #TechTheatre

Doing the backstage track tonight, monitoring mics. It's a good respite from mixing, which requires a lot of focus. #Sound #TechTheatre #Theatre

One of my favorite parts of describing mixing a show is the awkward verbal stumbling as I try to describe the position of a fader all the way down. "So then I pull the fader to negative infinity... Yeah, it's weird but it's just the term for 'muted' but 'muted' could mean the mute button... I know it seems like it should be zero but zero is actually really loud..." #TechTheatre #Sound

The saddest thing that can happen to us #techtheatre folks - or any #theatre folk, really, is closing down a place. And in this town, out of the 3 public funded stages, it's the second one I shut down the mains, lock the door and turn away. This one is harder, first place I worked here, only dedicated children / puppet theatre in the area. It was run by a bunch of old ladies as a non-profit, but they'll hire pro performers (and me). I've met so many great artists. RIP cutest red curtain ever.

Why yes, that’s an intercom base station with integrated cigarette lighter and cigarette pack cubby. 😆 #techtheatre
