The rain finally came and lots of it.
Last night a thunderstorm passed through and dumped a full barrel of rainwater in two minutes, today it's a more steady series of showers.
Good for our garden! The storks are not so happy and were seen tossing wet grass clumps out of their nest.

The rain clouds blew right past without a drop. Had to get the hose out to give some water to our seeds.

If you're wondering why trees drop small twigs and branches during storms, its to provide storks with material to fix the nest damage caused by the same storm.

Our storks are sitting on an egg. Or multiple eggs, probably. One bird is always in the nest and sitting down. The other can go off and eat.

Starlings singing a song, storks fixing their nest from wind and rain damage.
We thought they were sitting on an egg already, but apparently not.
There's plenty of starlings but hardly any sparrows this spring, the little birds stayed for the winter and that did apparently not work out too well for them this time.

While Lithuanian politicians discuss state-sponsored discos to help people make more babies, the storks have no need for such support.

Wife arrive! Or uh, partner. Whatever.
I think they're both the same storks as last year. Because they are totally used to my bullshit. And last year that took some time and suspicious eyeballing first.
The shagging has begun immediately. There's no foreplay, the whole thing lasts about 5 seconds but goes on many times per day, accompanied by slow beak clacking. Then several minutes of intense preening to straighten the feathers.

Nice weather today. Mr. Stork was preening himself, but remains solo despite his efforts.
-
Mr. Stork looks a bit grumpy on account of the rain. He hates wet feathers. Makes him look all spiky. Only beaks should look spiky, you see.
He's been borrowing some twigs from our garden to fix up the nest but despite it looking ready, no partner has showed up yet.

Look who's back from winter holidays. Welcome back!
Time to work! Fix up that nest, mow the grass that's grown there since you left, chase off contenders and bring some order* to the local birdlife.
I think it might be the same one as last year. They do not always return to the same nest, but this one is utterly used to me working in the yard and making fake clapper sounds with my tongue, which last year took some time.
It must be a male, because stork males always return first to do the work of rebuilding the nest.
* Nothing larger than a starling dares venture near an occupied stork nest, even crows only yell insults from a safe distance.

They're gone.
The young storks moved out a while ago and joined the first timer flock to the south. They need to go earlier, as the first migration is the hardest.
The parents stayed a little longer, enjoying their regained freedom and then left as well.
Our storks are most likely heading for the eastern route around the Mediterranean, across the Bosporus and the Suez canal.
Bon voyage!
I'm sure they'll come back next year, or whoever claims the nest. It's not like we can tell them apart :)

All three young storks are flying now 👍
This means the nest is sometimes empty most of the day, but they're not far, foraging in the meadow. At night they return to the safety of the nest.
Their beaks are starting to grow longer and turn orange.
High up in the sky, I've seen the first flock (mustering) of young storks, training for their long trip around the Mediterranean to Africa.
-
These three youngsters still haven't flown, although when it's windy they stand up, spread their wings and jump up in the nest, hovering for a second before dropping back down.
Their flight feathers look fully developed now, so maybe they just need to find their confidence.

Young stork trying out their wings. Still a bit patchy, but it can't be much longer until the first flight now.
They're almost full size and the nest is very crowded.

The three storklings are growing up fast. They're already spreading their wings, although the flight feathers are still patchy. They clacker quietly and clean themselves and no longer soil the nest.
But they can't get their own food yet and they're getting pretty big, so both parents are extremely busy flying in delivery meals. As soon as they arrive, three black beaks start looking up at them, squeaking and pulling on the long orange beak to cough up some pre-chewed meals.
Sometimes both adults go out foraging now, as the kids are already larger than most predators, especially crows.
The only time both adults are in the nest these days is when an intruder needs seeing off, like today.

Wet stork on a sunny day? Either someone fell into the lake or they do bathe.
-
Stork update! There's at least two storklings up in there. They're growing fast and make all kinds of cute squeaks now. Some sound like a frog, which I'm not sure if it's the baby storks or their food.
It took a few weeks, but now they're big enough you can sometimes see them peeking over the edge of the nest.
They clacker their little black beaks almost as loud as a big one.
Parents very busy bringing all the takeout food the kids keep ordering.
-
Sunset garden walk. It's rare to see these two together now. They're usually too busy hunting and bringing home food to retch up for their offspring while the other guards the nest.
Not seen any small beaks pointing skywards yet, but lots of horking up food, so there must be some hungry beaks to serve it to.
No shortage of frogs and snails after all this rain.
-
Stork update! There must be eggs now, because someone is sitting in the nest all the time, head barely peeking over the edge. Smart to wait until the surprise snow and cold had passed. Apparently they also wait until at least 2 eggs have been laid.
So in about 33 days there should be young storks. Hopefully nobody gets thrown out.

Stork 1: We navigated through the Sahara desert, dodged missiles over Gaza and drones over Ukraine for this?
Stork 2: Climate change my cloaca, it used to be warmer*
* It was not. Storks aren't good at fact checking and don't have access to historical average temperature records.

Adebar is back. Not seen him since last week, so I thought he may have found a different nest. Or maybe this is a different stork, no idea. Perhaps he had to get used to the new farm owners and more activity first. Or was snoozing somewhere after the long trip. Or went to MiceDonalds and devoured 23 McRodent in a row. 🤷♂️
Well, glad he's back.
