4/4Even more moisture is forecasted for Monday with increasing chances of wetting rain. Overall, fire behavior will be limited to creeping and smoldering with the arrival of monsoonal moisture. Smaller fuels will not be as receptive to fire spread, but large diameter fuels are still very dry and areas under mixed conifer stands are not seeing as much precipitation and will continue to burn.

3/4An area has been identified to put in contingency dozerline south of Taylor Mesa Lake pushing towards the canyon rim to connect with containment line constructed by the Stoner Group.
Stoner Group: Handcrews finished the section of handline in the Pipe Creek area yesterday. On the east side of Stoner Creek, a line has been flagged to connect with dozerline on Taylor Mesa and, weather dependent, construction will begin today. A chipper will start working along CR 40 to chip the large amount of brush that was cleared out from around residences in the area. Crews completed installation of pumps, sprinklers, and hose and tested them to ensure they were in working order, in the event they are needed.
Structure Groups: Crews moved along CR 38 checking pumps, sprinklers and hoses to ensure that they were operational and in safe locations with anticipated rising water levels in the creeks due to rainfall. Crews completed structure assessments and preparation around structures near Hwy 145.
Weather and Fire Behavior: We will see additional showers and thunderstorms again today developing around noon and continuing through 4pm, with lingering showers through midnight. Potential for lightning and gusty outflow winds of 15-25 mph exists with these storms.

2/3Crews plan to construct a contingency line by thinning brush and trees from the Stoner Mesa Road west of the division break. A small section of handline connecting the Stoner Mesa Road to CR 38 to complete the contingency line is planned for today.
Division T: Crews continue mop up work on the east end of the division using the large hose lay they established yesterday. A chipper will be working in the division today to clear piles of brush resulting from fire line construction and will be doing chipping operations for the next few shifts. An excavator is moving to the division to start on suppression repair work. Crews made significant progress on the concentrated areas of heat near the end of the 545.D road
Division X: Dozerline construction of primary and secondary containment lines is complete and the dozers are moving off the division to other areas where they are needed. Mop up continues along the primary containment line along Stoner Mesa Trail moving south to where the line ties in with the canyon rim. A remote spike camp is in place on Stoner Mesa and is being supported by aircraft in the mornings when the weather allows for flying.
Division W: Crews finished building the secondary contingency line that runs from the fire’s edge near Fox Den Reservoir, along the canyon rim and connecting back into the 202 road.

Aug 24 at 10:24 AM EDTMorning update from Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1
Size: 10,233 acres
Containment: 41%Special Note: A community meeting will be held today, Sunday, August 24th at 6 pm at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave, Dolores, CO 81323.
Current Situation: Fire activity was mostly limited to creeping and smoldering yesterday, although the Stoner Creek drainage still had active fire behavior due to morning direct sun and cloudless skies. Fire activity decreased with the arrival of thunderstorms and rainfall in the early afternoon. Overnight relative humidity recovery was high, and firefighters will see additional precipitation over the fire area for the next several days. Fire suppression activities over the coming days will be weather dependent with crews only working in areas that can be safely accessed.
Division A/E: Firefighters are using UAS (unmanned aerial systems) with IR (infrared) heat detecting technology in their mop up efforts and to keep an eye on the east side of the division. IR flights are still detecting isolated areas of heat near the control line in Division A, and firefighters are working to mop those up and further secure the fire perimeter.

Aug 7 at 9:18 PM EDTThe Stoner Mesa Fire has increased in size to 833 acres, growing to the east and north along the southern edge of Stoner Creek.
Fire behavior has been extremely active once again through the hot afternoon hours. The photos in this post were taken late this afternoon by Field Operations Section Chief Lance Martin from an incident helicopter.
Because of the extremely remote, hazardous terrain, the team is identifying locations to establish indirect fireline farther away from the fire. An indirect strategy in these conditions is safer for firefighters and it will help improve the long-term probability of success. Today the San Juan Hotshots started scouting with the division supervisor looking at indirect options on Taylor Mesa, which would be a combination of existing roads, handline and dozer line.
Other crews are starting to carry out structure protection plans along the County Road 38 corridor between Mavreeso Campground and Dunton. Structure protection crews will be installing water tanks, pumps, hoseline and sprinklers in the coming days so that they are ready, if needed.
Also, a reminder that Stage 2 fire restrictions go into effect tomorrow (Friday, August 8th on the San Juan National Forest and multiple other jurisdictions, per Stoner Mesa Fire Information.

Stoner Mesa Fire UpdateHighlights: There are no anticipated closures to Hwy 145 and CR 38. Any future evacuations would be announced by Dolores County Emergency Alerts. Due to extreme fire behavior and dangerous conditions on the ground, fire managers are developing an indirect suppression strategy, utilizing control lines away from the fire’s edge, which is safer for firefighters and improves the long-term probability of success.
Fire Behavior, Smoke & Weather: A red flag warning is in effect today from 11am to 8pm. Today’s weather will be hot, dry and windy in the fire area, which is expected to drive fire growth. Smoke will be visible throughout Southwest Colorado, and will impact local communities at night as it settles into river corridors and valley bottoms including the Highway 145 corridor and County Road 38.
…Operations Today:
San Juan Team 8, the local Type 3 Incident Management Team, took command of the fire at 6:00am.
The San Juan Interagency Hotshot Crew will be assessing options for indirect containment lines on Taylor Mesa.
Crews will begin assessing structures far in advance of the fire out of an abundance of caution. Crews will be seen in the County Road 38 corridor and in the Rico area.
Crews will be scouting Stoner Mesa Road (Forest Road 686) for potential control features. -
