It's a commonplace in abolitionist circles that modern policing in the US began with slave patrols. This is true, and the details are fascinating and horrifying.

Sally Hadden's book Slave Patrols is the only monograph on the subject that I'm aware of. Slave patrols were highly localized, so there was a great deal of variation on how they operated. Hadden shows how this diversity of tactics evolving over time led to many of the techniques used by police today.

I don't see nearly enough acknowledgement of the fact that the "well-regulated militias" in the second amendment were slave patrols.

If you think the 2nd amendment is sacred, you must be aware it was placed in the bill of rights to protect the rights of slave patrols to carry weapons to intimidate and even kill with little or no recourse run away enslaved people? I am hoping you are not in favor of reinstating slavery.
