  1. @tankgrrl but if all the computers are predicting protein phenotypes who is listening for aliens?

  2. SETI@home …

  3. Congratulations to the SETI@Home project for successfully completing their analysis.

27 years ago I helped build a decentralized computing platform that was a more general form of what they were doing, but they were always the OG.

Here’s a nice discussion of the results. (Spoiler: nothing world-shaking, but interesting next steps)

  4. 🚀👽BREAKING: SETI@Home hits 'snooze' button! Instead of hunting aliens, they're now analyzing data... or pretending to. 🛌 Meanwhile, the message boards will stay live for all your intergalactic theories. 🌌 Keep dreaming, Earthlings!

  5. I am cleaning up my vault and found an entry about #WorldCommunityGrid

In the past I've contributed three using the #boinc client.
I can remember that in this time, they had some successes for childhood cancer.

Looks like this project is still online.

Have you ever heard of that or done similar things?

    I think #SetiAtHome worked similar.

  6. @BOINCSynergy Is there any possibility of restarting the #SetiAtHome project

And could you remind me of the reasons it was shut down please

  7. Did anyone have this installed on their computer? My dad used to have this running on one of his older PCs, but they've discontinued it #SETI #SETIatHome

  8. Could a citizen-owned network in the style of Seti@Home compete with GPT-4?

How may clients do we need before we meet OpenAI's capabilities?

"Lambdalabs estimated a hypothetical cost of around $4.6 million US dollars and 355 years to train GPT-3 on a single GPU in 2020, with lower actual training time by using more GPUs in parallel."

  10. @Karld Agree, #SetiAtHome is an inspirational project.

We just boosted Erick Korpela Mastodon #introduction - Eric J. Korpela @SETIEric
    - thoroughly recommend following.

  11. I suppose with the #twitastrophe ongoing, I should get around pinning an #introduction.

I'm Eric Korpela, an astrophysicist by training. My expertise is in interstellar matter (#ISM), UV instrumentation, radio instrumentation, and #SETI. I used to direct a small volunteer computing project called SETI@home (#setiathome). I'm semi-retired, and theoretically working 17 hours a week. In practice that turns into almost as many hours as I was working before I retired.

My posts here will often be unrelated to my work. I find it hard to be chatty about things that have exhausted me during the day. My short term life goal is to learn all that is knowable.

    My non-work interests are #vintagecomputing #fishing #politics #vintagegaming #cocktails #food #beer #wine #NCAAFootball and #photography.

  12. #SETIatHome hibernation
«On March 31, the volunteer computing part of #SETI@home will stop distributing work and will go into hibernation.
    […]

    1) Scientifically, we're at the point of diminishing returns; basically, we've analyzed all the data we need for now.

    2) It's a lot of work for us to manage the distributed processing of data. We need to focus on completing the back-end analysis of the results we already have, and writing this up in a scientific journal paper.»
