  3. Morning Folks. This morning, I give massive thanks to @Krikket and the rest of the mentors for making sure that #Blaugust2025 was a wildly successful event, and big props to all of the Blaugustans who participated.

I also talk a bit about #DestinyRising and #PathOfExile2 and my Bigfoot video from yesterday.

It's been hours since Blaugust officially ended; is it too late to do a retrospective? How about for every August from the blog's start in 2005?

  16. We made it to the end of Blaugust.

I went into it this month thinking I might be able to stretch to reach a goal of 15 posts. Then, the enthusiasm of the community inspired me with ideas, discussions and encouragement and here we are with 31 posts in 31 days and for the third year in a row, I've reached the coveted Rainbow Diamond Award.

It was a fun ride but I'm glad I don't have anything to publish tomorrow.

  17. Guild Wars 2: New Elite Specializations Coming with Visions of Eternity

I admit, I stopped playing Guild Wars 2 not long after the last expansion came out. I like the game, but in between feeling lost when not playing it often and my chronic hand issues which prevent me from playing that game often, I lost the motivation to do much in the game other than logging in every other day.

But these new specializations sound nice! With the exception of Amalgam. Who wants to be reminded of the dentist every time they play their engineer?

Back in the original Guild Wars, I mostly played a warrior and my little dervish. I liked the way the paragon looked, but that profession was just not for me. I had the same issue with the ritualist. My main in Guild Wars 2 is a warrior. With the upcoming expansion, I can unlock the Paragon for her. Since I mostly play solo or roam through the open world, I am not sure how viable this is. And since the grass is always greener on the other side… I keep trying to get into playing necromancer. They will get the Ritualist as their new specialization. They mention “supportive builds or aggressive power-focused builds”. Maybe I will give this a try – but since my main has been a warrior for ages, I will focus on her first!

As is usual for ArenaNet, we got to play with the elite specializations as a “public beta event”. It’s perfect for them to gather feedback and to give us a chance to see that we really want to play with these new specializations!

Or not. I logged in with a beta warrior. Warrior has been my main for the longest time. I logged off after a couple of fights. It’s just not for me.

But this may be because I have a hard time remembering skills in Guild Wars 2. My brain just can’t cope with the amount of visual effects coupled with “this skill deals damage within this range to this amount of enemies and on top of that, it causes this condition and also removes this condition from you, but only if you jumped over a fence or ran away from a cow within the last ten seconds, otherwise, you receive this condition instead” – or, well, something like that…

I will probably get the expansion because I have bought every expansion so far and there will be another homestead to play with! And then I will have plenty of time to first unlock the specialization and then get used to playing it.

  18. Journaling is one of those intensely personal things, for people who choose to do so. It's not a consistent practice for me, but it's lovely to have it to turn to when I need it.

  19. A static site — like one built with #Eleventy — which either builds from local files or fetches from a CMS before build time can have magnificient time travel capabilities.

I can travel back to any version control commit point in my website's entire history and see the website exactly as it was back then.

  21. All My Games

The question how we are keeping track of our game backlogs came up in our Blaugust Discord recently. I have never heard of Backloggery or Infinitebacklog.

I have Playnite installed, but have not been using it much. I mostly start up the client to check whether I own a game already (when there is a game bundle with one interesting game and I want to see whether other new ones are part of the bundle as well), because I do not usually check all individual libraries.

    Playnite

But I have no idea what else is out there. And I never checked what other features Playnite has.

I was rooting for GOG Galaxy but it doesn’t seem to still be actively developed? And the plugins are annoying.

What I like best about Playnite is that even after months of not using it, I open the program and it just updates my games library from all the connected sources.

It automatically sorts games by category/genre. You can also filter by genres, install size, time played, age rating and many more.

But what I also love about it is the statistics part! You can even filter your statistics a bit. So now I know that out of the 3000 games I have, I currently have 13 % installed.

I have never played 73 % of the games I own. This number seems really bad, but I did get a lot of the free games from Epic and Amazon/Twitch and then there is also a bunch of games that were part of bundles where I was only interested in a few of the bundled games.

Still, there is definitely also a significant number of games that I did buy that I never played…

My average play time per game is 16.5 hours, although this is probably very skewed because of the much higher play time of my top games:

    1. Rift 10 %
    2. Crusader Kings III 6 %
    3. Old World (test branch) 4 %
    4. Civilization VI 2 %
    5. Star Trek Timelines 2 %
    6. Star Trek Online 2 %
    7. Hexarchy 2 %
    8. Tropico 6 2 %
    9. Parkasaurus 2 %
    10. Project Hospital 2 %
    11. Prison Architect 2 %
    12. Old World 1 %

These are the games that I played more than 200 hours each, although with some “but”s attached. Old World per se is less than 200 hours, as I mainly play on the test branch. I get to play with all the updates immediately and with a few rare exceptions, I have not had any issues (and the exceptions then led to the 190 hours playing with the main branch).

Hexarchy does not have that high amount of play time. There was a time where you could not save your game session, but I wanted to finish the daily game. So I started a game and then let it sit there for hours until I had time to finish it.

I obviously also have a high amount of hours played in Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings Online, but these come with their own launcher and thus, the time is not tracked anywhere for Playnite to catch.

Star Trek Timelines was a guilty pleasure. I had it running in the background when I was writing my doctoral thesis. It was just enough distraction to keep me working on my thesis for hours!

Still, it is accurate enough overall.

Playnite also has a “select random game” button which I thought I could use to try out new (for me) games that I have not played yet. It even works with in combination with the filters!

Then again… Old World is calling and I haven’t played Crusader Kings III recently…

  24. We've taken a few months off, but we're back looking at the August 2025 Humble Choice bundle. If you planned to pause, you only have hours to go before the auto-renew kicks in. But there's a lot to like about this month's bundle...

Last time I tried years ago, they didn't quite work for my needs but this time I think I found a sweet spot.
