I am cleaning up my vault and found an entry about #WorldCommunityGrid

In the past I've contributed three using the #boinc client.
I can remember that in this time, they had some successes for childhood cancer.

Looks like this project is still online.

Have you ever heard of that or done similar things?

Hmm, it's getting colder again. Totally unrelated but how is the #WorldCommunityGrid doing nowadays? 🤓

I've just removed all of my #worldcommunitygrid instances. I have been running #wcg on a number of machines for many years now but, since its migration from IBM, it has become increasingly fragmented and, not to put a finer point on it, thoroughly unreliable. I'm not prepared to continue to support an organisation that takes over 2 weeks to carry out a migration that was planned (if it was planned at all) to take an afternoon. Sad.

This is my 13th #blaugust post. No wonder I'm behind schedule if I write a post for three days... 😀 This one about what my username means to me.

I used to say that running https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ #worldcommunitygrid is completely free, as the CPU time I put to it would otherwise go to waste as idling. Nowadays one may need to adjust that statement a bit, as there would also be the option to mine crypto currencies instead. Maybe I've lost some revenue by donating so far 95 years worth of CPU time to scientific research? No plans to change my course of action, though. This research is more important than some coins on my bank account.

For any #BOINC users out there, I'm trying to reinstall it on my desktop. I think my antivirus messed it up. I'm neither able to uninstall or install it properly, getting the same error in both cases. So clearly, I'm missing something somewhere. Anyone have any ideas?

I got a badge in World Community Grid for crunching Africa Rainfall project for 14 cpu-thread-days. Another badge to my slowly growing collection.

You can log directly into https://worldcommunitygrid.org, of course. Your account is linked to your email address. Clicking on History lets you see your contributions by date.

In the BOINC Manager, click Projects, which shows you the username of your WCG (and any other) accounts. Compare that to the WCG site (the Overview tab) to see if you're looking at the correct account. If not, try a different email address.

Any #WorldCommunityGrid users out there? I've been running BOINC for about 4 days now, my account appears to be associated with WCG, Yet WCG keeps telling me "It looks like you haven't installed the World Community Grid software yet. Download the software, and in a few minutes you could be contributing." - my WCG is all in order, BOINC is downloading and working on their work - any ideas what is going on?

It’s that time of the year again. It’s _cold_ outside and I sit at my PC anyway so let’s crunch some numbers to heat up the place:

I've been using #WorldCommunityGrid for... wow... four years now. Where the hell did the time go?
As a #cancer survivor I'm pretty passionate about finding treatments, and that's one of the things #WCG tackles. But almost everyone I've ever tried to get interested in the program is against it and I don't understand why. Curious if anyone out there is using it besides me.

Nachdem #setiathome vor längerer Zeit abgeschaltet wurde, hatte ich meine übrige Rechenzeit über #worldcommunitygrid gespendet. Leider scheint das seit ein paar Wochen offline zu sein - und das, nachdem sie bereit für einen Umzug in ein anderes Rechenzentrum mehrere Wochen offline waren…

After 18 years of contributing excess computer cycles to #WorldCommunityGrid I have said goodbye to them. The last years since #Krembil took over hosting from #IBM, the network has been down more than it was up, resulting in frustration beyond imaginable.

I've signed up for #Rosetta@Home, we'll see how that goes.

(After #SETI@Home closed down, I switched to running #Einstein@Home on my #raspberrypi desktop - that has continued nicely without frustration or interruptions.)

@caspian I should really follow more of those. #Tech is a big one of mine. Always itching to learn about rarely talked about services. #WorldCommunityGrid and #YouMail, for one. I don't know why they're not more widely talked about. They change the name of their respective games, really. One advances science, the other makes your voicemail more fun than it's ever been.

It's almost x-mas where people will traditionally donate money to charity.

I donate computation power for humanitarian, not for profit, public domain research.

(stats look somewhat empty because #WorldCommunityGrid was in maintenance mode during ownership change and no jobs could be fetched way too often until they found all bugs o0)

Geez… almost one year later and #WorldCommunityGrid is not doing great at the moment. Relaunch took lots of time and now there is trouble downloading the jobs 😢 Getting "transient HTTP error" all over the board (like many others too) 😮‍💨
