I've been lamenting the tremendous waste of resources dedicated to cryptomining, but I finally got around to installing BOINC and signed up for tasks from Rosetta@home (protein folding.)
The trailblazing SETI@home project is no longer/currently active, but World Community Grid (ex-IBM), and Science United (NSF/UCB run) offer plenty of opportunities to use CPU/GPU cycles for good.
Now, to keep a lid on my resource usage...
