@orionkidder @swanchime Yeah, I once wrote a trans side character and I just don't feel very good with that depiction, even though I had a #SensitivityReader. When I worked with that person on a story we wrote together, this worked way better

For the 1st time ever, a sensitivity reader is going over one of my soon-to-be published novels.

I AM SO NERVOUS

I believe I have treated the sensitive subject matter with respect and grace and depth of thought--and I did do research--but obviously I'm biased.

Also, in all my years of writing and publishing, this is the first time I've ever let a complete stranger read one of my unpublished novels.

SO. NERVOUS.

Digging back into my #WIP and my notes for ‘Hastily Revised Bestiary’ for #WritingWonders has made me realise I need to get a #SensitivityReader , or three or four, in to go over some of it with me. Especially a #Jewish sensitivity reader, as I really REALLY do not want to fall into the antisemitic global conspiracy trap. My Big Bad IS a conspiracy of sorts, but it’s more akin to white colonialism. Really got to make sure I don’t fall into the traps though 😤

Just got off the phone with a prospective client, in which I was describing my services, and I came to the subject of sensitivity issues that I review for. And he (older white guy) said, I know there are things in my book that will offend some people. And I said, sure, but the real question is whether there are things in your book that will harm some people.

And that, I think, is the point. Do no harm. Use a #SensitivityReader!

There was this book I did a sensitivity reading a while ago. It's set in Japan but written by non Japanese person. I was actually intrigued by the story but the publisher said it wasn't coming out until a year later or so...
Today I suddenly remembered about the book and looked it up and it was published this fall. I am going to buy it and read it and if it's good I will share with you all. #book #Japan #sensitivityreader
