  1. For #SarcophagusSaturday, the "Sarcophagus of the Chair of St. Peter" (ca 330) found in Arles. Peter is seated and reading as Roman soldiers stand around him. In front of him, Christ looks on and speaks to him. 📸🇫🇷 flic.kr/p/ojoHF3 #photography #archaeology #France #EarlyChristianity

  2. The 4th c. "Sarcophagus of the Resurrection" at Arles shows 12 apostles as philosophers processing towards an empty cross surmounted by a victory wreath. The Roman soldiers on each side suggest this is an image of the Resurrection. 📷 flic.kr/p/2qYz7T3 #photography #SarcophagusSaturday #Easter

  3. For #SarcophagusSaturday, the sarcophagus of Marcus Claudianus, a "vir perfectissimus" with ties to the Roman emperor, and a Christian. He died in the latter part of Constantine's reign.

  6. For #SarcophagusSaturday a beautiful 5th cent. piece found in the cathedral of #Ravenna. The "sacrophagus of San Barbaziano" depicts a youthful, beardless Christ in the central niche flanked by Peter and Paul. The early beardless Christ type was used well into the sixth century. flic.kr/p/2pgt7Hd

  7. At the Baths of Diocletian, I just happened across what appears to be a sarcophagus sized for one… it was an exciting find, especially when the fully realised single portrait is of a woman.

  8. For #SarcophagusSaturday here is a banquet scene on the end of a 3rdC CE sarcophagus in the Lapidario Estense in #Modena. They may be eating the wild boars shown being hunted on the other end...

  9. I love the image of the gentle shepherd and his dog on this fragment of an Endymion and Selene sarcophagus from the #GettyVilla. In the last few months, I've come across two similar sarcophagi, both with the same shepherd and dog. A sweet moment. #sarcophagussaturday

  10. #SarcophagusSaturday, a sad story of a child's life and death. On the right, the new parents carry their baby in a carriage; in the middle, the toddler learns to walk with a wheeled cart; on the left, the parents carry the dead child to the tomb and the afterlife. 😔 1/

  11. #SarcophagusSaturday! This very deeply carved marble sarcophagus with a Dionysian theme is missing a portrait of the deceased in the central clipeus. A hasty burial? Love the little Erotes at the bottom, stealing bunches of grapes from two roosters. 1/

  12. #SarcophagusSaturday I'm often asked if the Romans painted their spectacularly carved sarcophagi. Yes, they certainly did, as you can see from the red pigment remaining on this 3rd c. CE beauty with a Dionysian procession. ALT for more. #polychromy 1/

  13. @laecta Over on the bird site, the #ClassicsTwitter always celebrated #MosaicMonday, #EpigraphyTuesday, #ReliefWednesday, #PhallusThursday, #FrescoFriday, and the aforementioned #SarcophagusSaturday. Sunday is a day of rest. No, not all of it makes sense, but we've had great fun with it over the years.

    Such a good idea ! 👍😊

Et pour le [MosaicDay] ? 🤔

  15. Taking the dog out for a walk - heel, Cerberus, heel!

Hercules performing one of his 12 Labors, dragging Cerberus out of the gates of Hades; flanked by strigilation (the waters of death) and Erotes holding fresh game. 2nd c. CE, proconnesian marble. #SarcophagusSaturday
