You get a bit of a nasty shock if you make a mistake and hold up the wrong side of this bronze mirror! 😳 🐍
Apotropaic, the Gorgon's head is there to ward off envious looks or the evil eye. #Greek, made in southern Italy, 500-480 BCE. #GettyVilla #archaeology

Because one can never get enough of ancient #RomanGlass, Here's two 1st c. BCE ribbed glass 'rippenschale' bowls with white trails, one cobalt blue, the other burgundy.
Probably made in the eastern Mediterranean. #GettyVilla #archaeology #romanarchaeology

A seriously difficult piece of ancient glass to photograph properly. This small 3rd-4th
c. CE Roman glass vessel has *thirteen* handles. Some residue remains inside, and it probably came from a tomb somewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. #GettyVilla #ancientglass #RomanGlass -
The relief was found with the statuette of a goddess, probably Ceres, and another of Roma or Virtus. These pieces seem to have formed a group of relief sculpture, which may have served as appliqué decorating the same object, perhaps a chariot or a piece of furniture. #archaeology #GettyVilla 2/

1st c. CE bronze fragment of a larger relief, depicting two upper-class #Roman men wearing togas. The older man carries a scroll and wears the shoes of a senator, marking him as a magistrate (chief priest). The younger man wears the shoes of an eques (knight). #GettyVilla 1/

This small 1st c. CE Roman glass beaker or cup features several decorative bands, including a wreath pattern. An inscription in Greek suggests the beaker's festive function:
KATAXAIPE KAI EYΦPAINOY ("Rejoice and be of good cheer"). I'll toast to that! #GettyVilla #ancientglass #archaeology

From a visit to the #GettyVilla a couple of weeks ago, here's a luminous 1st c. BCE Roman mosaic cast glass bowl from a workshop in the eastern Mediterranean. It's comprised of blue (cobalt) and white (antimony and tin oxide) rods fused and melted into a disc, and placed over a form. Broken and repaired at some point in its past. #ancientglass #archaeology

I love the image of the gentle shepherd and his dog on this fragment of an Endymion and Selene sarcophagus from the #GettyVilla. In the last few months, I've come across two similar sarcophagi, both with the same shepherd and dog. A sweet moment. #sarcophagussaturday

Late 1st c. CE Romano-Egyptian #mummy portrait of a woman with a Flavian hairstyle. Deep pinkish-lavender garments with black clavi (woven stripes) running vertically down the front.
Note the triple-tiered necklace of gold, pearl and emerald. From Hawara. #GettyVilla
