✨Augustus and Tiberius - the Gemma Augustea✨
One of the most impressive artefacts from the Julio-Claudian period, the Gemma Augustea is our pick this #ReliefWednesday. Augustus is honoured in the top register in the guise of Jupiter, holding a sceptre and an augur’s staff. Tiberius is on the left about to disembark from a chariot. Germanicus also makes an appearance dressed in military attire. The lower register depicts a military victory, thought to be the suppression of the Dalmatian Revolt.

✨Honouring the gods✨
This relief appears to depict the lead up to a bull sacrifice. There is a veiled figure at the altar with an attendant nearby, while another person leads the bull towards the final moment.
Unusually a building in the background appears to be very lop-sided giving the scene a more quirky vibe than you might otherwise expect. If you know more details about this artefact, we’d love to know more. It is apparently held by the Antiques Museum in the Royal Palace, Stockholm.

✨Celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse✨
This stunning relief is a bit of mystery in terms of provenance, but the sense of movement makes it a show-stopper. The heroic nude is usually identified as Castor and he leads a gorgeous horse while a dog follows behind.
May your year ahead be bright and filled with the vital fire embodied by the fire horse!

✨Pan riding an ithyphallic mule✨
The Greek god Pan was connected with flocks and shepherds so it perhaps only fitting that he is depicted here upon a mule, who is faithfully rendered complete with phallus.
This piece is thought to a Roman relief modelled upon an earlier Hellenistic era relief and it is now held in the MAN Napoli, inv. 27712.

✨The dance of the maenads✨
This is one of four reliefs depicting maenads dancing held by the Museo del Prado. The exceptional detail and sense of flowing movement is simply exquisite. These are Roman reinterpretations of Greek reliefs from the fifth century BCE and were designed to honour the maenads’ chosen god, Dionysus. The original reliefs were purported to be crafted by the sculptor Callimachus (ca. 410-400 BCE).

✨Augustus and Agrippa✨
In 27 BCE, Augustus settled veterans from the Egyptian campaign in the Gallic city Nemausus and gave it the rights of a colonia. The Egyptian connection lead to the coins of Gallic Nemausus showing Egyptian symbols such as the crocodile, palm tree, or palm frond.

Relief from the palace at Nimrud ~ c. 883–859 BCE
This Assyrian relief depicts a winged divinity who seems to be tending to a sacred tree. The relief was originally painted and it would be amazing to see how it looked in its intended colours.

For #AllHallows, have a relief of #Hermes in his role as #psychopomp. Hermes guides the souls of the dead to the underworld. Here, he takes the hand of a dead woman named Myrrhine on the way down to Hades.

@laecta Over on the bird site, the #ClassicsTwitter always celebrated #MosaicMonday, #EpigraphyTuesday, #ReliefWednesday, #PhallusThursday, #FrescoFriday, and the aforementioned #SarcophagusSaturday. Sunday is a day of rest. No, not all of it makes sense, but we've had great fun with it over the years.
