"Humans are the only species that can create fictional worlds, like #StarWars. But are we ready to face the consequences of our imaginations? #Sapience" I love how Harari's work makes me think about the power of human imagination and its potential impact on society. #HarariFan

Book review: Usurpation, Sue Burke
★★★★☆A different sort of book than Semiosis and Interference, taking place entirely on Earth long after the second Pax expedition returns. Can the bamboo keep humans' chaotic conflicts in check? Where do the robots fit in? With so many forms of intelligence, who counts as a person, anyway?

New book review on my website!
Interference, Sue Burke
★★★★☆An intriguing followup to Semiosis that weaves several drastically different sentient species (both plant and animal) into a story about factions, community, freedom, communication and war.

"The most dangerous thing is not the unknown, but the things we think we know that aren't true. Question everything! #MythBusters #Sapience" Harari's wisdom challenges me to question my assumptions and be more critical in my thinking. #HarariWisdom

A quotation from Dante Alighieri:
«
Of all creation’s bounty realized,
God’s greatest gift, the gift in which mankind
is most like Him, the gift by Him most prized,
is the freedom he bestowed upon the will.
All his intelligent creatures, and they alone,
were so endowed, and so endowed are still.

Meandering about an aspect of the **Turing Hopper** mysteries by Donna Andrews.
Turing Hopper is an AIP (Artificial Intelligence Program) designed as a general-knowledge interface for the United Library system. Only three people know that she's achieved #sapience: Maude, originally executive secretary at UL, now president of Alan Grace Enterprises, a company set up by Turing so she can have computer systems she controls, to retreat to if necessary; Tim, originally copy clerk at UL, now a fledgling private detective; and Samantha, a lawyer who was brought in on a previous case, who is now investigating what might be required to get Turing declared a free person, and not some company's property.
Other people in Donna Andrews' **Turing Hopper** mysteries _don't_ know Turing is a #sapient AIP. They think that she's second-gen CEO Alaina Grace (nicknamed Turing), an eccentric computer genius who never comes to the office, but communicates by speakerphone and email and texts. The major person who doesn't know is Claudia, a more experienced detective who went into business with Tim. Yet despite having to hide her secret, Turing is remarkably sloppy when speaking in front of Claudia.
For example, a system backup CD is found for a (comatose) client's computers, for which the trio of Maude, Tim, and Claudia have no password. Tim slips it into a CD drive Turing can access, and asks if it will take long to crack the password to the backup, and hence access the system. Turing replies on speaker: "It would take most human hackers a long time, but with the kind of resources I can throw at it –". Don't you think that putting "human" in that statement was unwise?
In another instance, Maude is talking to Turing and KingFischer on speaker in the presence of Casey, a young hardware tech at Alan Grace. Turing is discussing creating a limited-function (non-sapient) AIP to do something. KingFischer, the chess AIP who seems to have also achieved sapience, mentions that it's modeled on Billius, the programming AIP, and Turing adds "Yes, I've always considered him the most literal-minded of all of us." Since Casey knows Turing as the unseen CEO, "us" also seems an unwise thing to say.
In any case, I've finished #reading the final **Turing Hopper** #mystery. It's better than the previous two volumes. Donna Andrews apparently had some warning that the series was fading, and while not being able to tack on a happy ending to the arc of a copy of Turing having been stolen and hacked for evil purposes, she did put in what reads as a sad ending to that plotline, where T2 won't have to suffer anymore. But the arc bad buy remains uncaught, and was not even seen in this volume. At least the book ended saying that Claudia will soon be told Turing's secret. ●●●●○

Updated TV review on my website!
Star Trek: Picard - Season One
★★★☆☆I have mixed feelings about the first season of Picard. But later seasons have given me a new appreciation for it.

Sentience Vs. sapience, I'm confused! Are all humans truly 'sapient' when conspiratorial beliefs are so mainstream? Maybe we're sentient, but sapient? People voted for Donald Trump! Time to stir the pot. 🤔 #PostTruth #Sapience #KingOfLies

For judging the level of #sapience of a so-called #AI, the #TuringTest is useless. But it does demonstrate something very important: humans are really bad at judging the level of sapience of other humans.
