So (finally) we may find out quite how damaging #Brexit is going to be for #supplychains bringing in good (especially #food) from #Europe.... but not until October 2024.
What this tells us is either #RishiSunakPM is planning an election in summer 2024 (around 6months before he needs to), so th required border checks will not be a live issues for #voters....
or this is expected to be a poisoned chalice for the next Govt. when trying to formulate post-#Brexit policy

When UK political parties do well in #local elections, it is taken as a vote of confidence in national policies, when they do badly its treated as 'merely' a protest vote with little national significance...
ahead of next months #localelections I think we can be pretty sure that #RishiSunakPM will be taking the latter position, as some polls already suggesting the #Tories may lose upwards of a thousand councillors....

Yesterday afternoon #RishiSunakPM said that as part of the 'additional funding' for the #NHS pay settlement there will be some 'reprioritisation, as there always is'; so that' not fully funded then - at least some of the cash will be redirected from the current budget.... so the row back didn't take long did it now (hours rather than days)

After some time it seems #RishiSunakPM & his cabinet have been unable to convince the majority of the UK public (#voters) that the #strikers are the enemy... rather support for most strikes remains strong.
Of course, the moves to now settle (or at least appear to be interested in settling) the disputes are informed by these figures, but, as I keep noting:
Importantly, without budget support any 'settlement' is just #austerity, with an intent of later blaming strikers for #publicservice cuts!

Q. is the demise & rescue/sale of #SiliconValleyBank an anomaly in a broadly stable #finanacial system, or the canary in the mine on regulatory problems in #financialservcies?
Right now, #RishiSunakPM & #POTUSBiden will be hoping their swift action(s) will have forestalled a wider crisis, but this morning dips in bonds & banking shares suggest some jitters among #investors in banks.... if contagion starts to gather pace the financial sector's 'stability' may prove illusionary - time will tell!

As we wait to see how long leave #SueGray will be required to take before joining #KeirStarmer's team, its clear the Daily Mail is a little concerned by the turn of events...
If all they've got is post-hoc #conspiracytheory then you know the #Tories are worried, however much (semi)positive coverage #RishiSunakPM might be able to generate!
Given the revolving door between the Cabinet & Tory supporting firms you'd think this might be the sort of speculation the Mail would want to discourage!

In #shipping, once a shift in routing has taken place (replacing a previously route), shifts back are unlikely... so the news that #Irish freight that used to hop across the #Irishsea & then ship to #EuropeanUnion via #Dover is now using the Rosslare to Cherbourg route is (for Dover) yet one more loss we can attach to #Brexit.
Even if #RishiSunakPM does sort out the #NorthernIrelandProtocol, I'd be very surprised if much of this business comes back to Dover;

So, CitiGroup has handed #RishiSunakPM a 'win', in that they are predicting that UK #inflation will drop swiftly to less that 3% by the end of the year... wait for Rishi to claim credit (its actually mainly linked to expected declines in #energy prices), contrasting with his claims he had nothing to do with it going up... more declaratory #politics on the way folks...

Looks like #Centrica (owner of #BritishGass) will confirm massively increased profits from last year... given these stem from the rise in wholesale price(s) not anything Centrica has actually done (other than control gas supply), this should be the rightful target for #windfalltaxes... these are essentially monopoly 'super profits'!
However, I won't be holding my breath! #RishiSunakPM is in their pocket!

but as before this is so much hogwash if #JeremyHunt continues to hold the line that all pyrites must come from within existing/settled budgets... if so, this is just another run at defunding public services (most crucially the #NHS) & will merely shift the problem from one aspect of the (various) public services' organisation to another...

After this week's #reshuffle & 'reorganisation' of some Govt. departments, its clear that #RishiSunakPM is only concerned with giving the impression he has an 'active' government, when really (as their inability/unwillingness to engage with the real problems of the UK shows) he & the #Tories already know they are holding the fort while their kleptocrat chums loot the country ahead of the next #election... the moral corruption of the UK political elite is very much on show, for those who look!

'If you can be sacked as a minister for breaking the ministerial code then surely you are also not fit to be an MP & should be sacked from that position as well? After all, why should constituents have to be represented by people found to be unfit for public office?'

#RishiSunakPM has now ordered his (new) ethics advisor to 'get to the bottom' of #NadhimZahawi's tax affairs, which as #DominicGrieve notes involves an unprecedented negotiation between HMRC & a sitting Chancellor!
Later this week, Sunak will say he has 'full confidence' in Zahawi before sacking him (perhaps over the weekend).
Its clear Sunak will sacrifice Zahawi to try to maintain a semblance of 'professionalism' & 'integrity' for his Govt. (although for many, that's a lost cause already)

As #RishiSunakPM says people are 'not idiots' on #taxation, its a good time to make it clear that #taxes are not 'a necessary evil' to be avoided when you can (yes I mean you #NadhimZahawi)
Taxes are the price we pay for civilisation, its how we contribute fairly (in a progressive tax system) to the general good & well-being of society.
Therefore tax is a positive good which should be celebrated as the engine that ensures we have the society we value!
We need to reject its negative portrayal!

The increasingly authoritarian character of #RishiSunakPM's Govt. is clear: we've moved from an intent to constrain the right to strike now to an intent to give police the power to shut down protests for 'slow marching', doubling down on already pretty rigid constraints on protest... we really are slowly seeing this country turn into a very different country from that many of imagine we live in... the old boiling frog metaphor is increasingly at the forefront of my thoughts

So #RishiSunakPM has told #SteveBarclay that if he wishes to respond to the #NHScrisis by paying #Nurses more than previously offered, he can... the catch: the Dept. Health's budget will remain the same... so Sunak is essentially using the #NursesStrike as a way of doubling down on the defunding of the #NHS as money will be transferred from other budgets to payroll, thereby worsening the crisis... of course this has nothing to do with #Tory donors' interests (see other posts yesterday & today)

If you're wondering why #RishiSunakPM's 'reasonableness' didn't go down well with the #unions or #strikers, remember that this is a Govt. that offers a declaratory #politics while seldom changing its position, nor its ideological interest in #classwar - the only people Rishi was talking to really were the editors if the right-wing press & once that message had been broadcast, the 'negotiations' were doomed to remain moribund in the face of his desire to break #workers will!

Given the amount of time taken up on the news discussing the various 'revelations' in Prince Harry's new memoirs, one cannot but help wonder whether this is really the politics of distraction...
I'm sure #RishiSunakPM is very pleased to see the #CostOfLivingCrises & #strikes pushed to the side in the news to be replaced by the 'analysis' of the #royalfamily.

As the next #generalelection edges closer (however long #RishiSunakPM tries to put it off), what we will likely see is an increasing range of media stories attacking the #LabourParty generally & #KeirStarmer specifically, all amplified on #socialmedia & also via platforms like What the Papers Say & other media reviews... while the attacks may be different, the strategy tested on #Corbyn will swing into action again (although #Starmer may be better equipped to counter some of the coming torrent)

Should we be testing #Chinese travellers entering UK or not?
Medical opinion seems to be that it offers little help in #covid #infection control (we have such high incidence already & Chinese variants are not substantially different) rendering #RishiSunakPM's U-Turn bringing the UK into line with other countries border health measures, merely 'performative'.
But the Q. then is, why do other countries think its worth doing?
