  1. So (finally) we may find out quite how damaging #Brexit is going to be for #supplychains bringing in good (especially #food) from #Europe.... but not until October 2024.

What this tells us is either #RishiSunakPM is planning an election in summer 2024 (around 6months before he needs to), so th required border checks will not be a live issues for #voters....

or this is expected to be a poisoned chalice for the next Govt. when trying to formulate post-#Brexit policy

  3. When UK political parties do well in #local elections, it is taken as a vote of confidence in national policies, when they do badly its treated as 'merely' a protest vote with little national significance...

ahead of next months #localelections I think we can be pretty sure that #RishiSunakPM will be taking the latter position, as some polls already suggesting the #Tories may lose upwards of a thousand councillors....

Rishi will likely spend this month talking down the election's significance

  4. Yesterday afternoon #RishiSunakPM said that as part of the 'additional funding' for the #NHS pay settlement there will be some 'reprioritisation, as there always is'; so that' not fully funded then - at least some of the cash will be redirected from the current budget.... so the row back didn't take long did it now (hours rather than days)

h/t @fkamiah17 for the heads up on that!

  5. Ben Jennings (Guardian) on the #RishiSunakPM's immediate punishment scheme & who should be subjected to it....

  6. A statement from Evelyn Partners (#RishiSunakPM's accountants):

“As experts in these areas, we will of course express our professional views on whether policy measures are positive or negative for our clients’ finances, irrespective of whoever is in government. We are strictly apolitical.”

    'apolitical???'

    Representing the interests of the global rich (EP's core clients), isn't apolitical;

it may be non-party-political, but it certainly is taking a political position on taxation & regulation

  7. However you crunch the numbers to compute #RishiSunakPM's effective tax rate... the real thing that his tax information (not his tax return which was not published today) confirms is that Rishi is not one of us; he's a member of the rich elite, disconnected from real life by a vast cushion of cash...

He's as good an illustration as you need of the oligarchy at the top of UK politics!

  9. After some time it seems #RishiSunakPM & his cabinet have been unable to convince the majority of the UK public (#voters) that the #strikers are the enemy... rather support for most strikes remains strong.

Of course, the moves to now settle (or at least appear to be interested in settling) the disputes are informed by these figures, but, as I keep noting:

Importantly, without budget support any 'settlement' is just #austerity, with an intent of later blaming strikers for #publicservice cuts!

  11. More on the friends of #RishiSunakPM:

'a senior banker recently told [William Kegan] that, when the prime minister was suggesting there was a clamour in the City for the relaxation of financial regulation, he (the banker) asked his counterparts in other financial institutions whether they were lobbying for it; nearly all of them said no. He said #GoldmanSachs was the exception. This called to mind the wonderful, ironic chapter in JK Galbraith’s The Great Crash...:
    In Goldman Sachs We Trust.'

  12. So #RishiSunakPM's family had to be spoken to about letting their dog off its lead in #HydePark, where all dogs are supposed to be on leads to protect local wildlife...

its just a small thing, but yet another revealing incident in the life of our political elite...

'there's a rule, but surely that's not intended for people like us...'

  14. Q. is the demise & rescue/sale of #SiliconValleyBank an anomaly in a broadly stable #finanacial system, or the canary in the mine on regulatory problems in #financialservcies?

Right now, #RishiSunakPM & #POTUSBiden will be hoping their swift action(s) will have forestalled a wider crisis, but this morning dips in bonds & banking shares suggest some jitters among #investors in banks.... if contagion starts to gather pace the financial sector's 'stability' may prove illusionary - time will tell!

  15. You'll have noticed some trouble with #SiliconValleyBank last week;

its an interesting illustration of a number of issues (which have been widely discussed over the weekend) but particularly allows us to draw a distinction between #POTUSBiden & #RishiSunakPM' approach to state 'intervention' in such cases:

The US is using its regulatory system to shore up depositors/clients in the crisis...

and the UK; we're trying to get #MiddleEast financials to buy the UK's SVB operation!

  17. Of course this is not going to surprise you but it seems that #RishiSunakPM's move to lighten the tax burden on #airlines was the result of some focussed lobbying by the sector...

If you still think there is any #green element to the #Tories ongoing policy, its only the colour of jealousy from those sectors unable to gain preferable tax treatment because they aren't chums with the appropriate minister...

  19. #RishiSunakPM is in #Paris today... here are four ways of seeing today's meeting:

Hurrah, finally (after the #LizTruss 'jury's out' comment) we are exploring a reset with our nearest neighbour....

Sigh, it just more declaratory politics; they'll chat, announce some 'initiatives' & nothing much will change...

Grrr... its a betrayal of #Brexit; how dare our PM talk to the French...

Shrug: its just too #neoliberal leaders comparing notes on how to shaft the #workers! #classwar

    Take your pick!

  21. are we about to see 'eatoutgate' as #MattHancock's WhatsAp messages reveal the Treasury looked to be covering up the impact of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme on local #covid infections?

its an open secret the scheme was #infection-generating (albeit this has been off the political agenda for a while), but as always the cover-up may be more politically problematic than the failure itself.

Watch out for #RishiSunakPM's distraction strategy to kick in

  23. As we wait to see how long leave #SueGray will be required to take before joining #KeirStarmer's team, its clear the Daily Mail is a little concerned by the turn of events...

If all they've got is post-hoc #conspiracytheory then you know the #Tories are worried, however much (semi)positive coverage #RishiSunakPM might be able to generate!

Given the revolving door between the Cabinet & Tory supporting firms you'd think this might be the sort of speculation the Mail would want to discourage!

  25. Ha ha... well that didn't take long... already the #Treasury are 'exploring' how a U-Turn on the reduction of #energy support might be finessed in the run up the #budget in a couple of weeks.... looks like #RishiSunakPM is not going to rely on the DUP's ability to offer a distraction to #fuelpverty after all....

  26. Over 7m people in UK are currently in #fuelpoverty; more that 10% of income, excluding housing costs is spent on #energy!

What is #JeremyHunt going to do: shift support available to raise people's bills this spring....

    So in the next couple of weeks we are either going to see a U-Turn, or we're going to see an extended programme of distraction;

perhaps #RishiSunakPM is expecting the DUP to cause such difficulties about the #WindsorAgreement that Hunt's budget will be on the inside pages?

  27. Q. is the 'emergency brake' or Stormont Brake which is a central element of the #WindsorAgreement actually a legislative brake or an ornament?

@davidallengreen argues that its the latter, and I'd trust his interpretation on this more than any public pronouncement by #RishiSunakPM or his nominated spokesperson... so once the DUP realise, I'm guessing there may be some fireworks!

  29. So now we are about to see quite how hard the DUP tail can wag the UK Govt. dog.... never, never underestimate the desire of a small party holding a larger party to ransom, to demonstrate their leverage - if the DUP does agree to rejoin power-sharing watch out for the price exgtracted from #RishiSunakPM

  31. In #shipping, once a shift in routing has taken place (replacing a previously route), shifts back are unlikely... so the news that #Irish freight that used to hop across the #Irishsea & then ship to #EuropeanUnion via #Dover is now using the Rosslare to Cherbourg route is (for Dover) yet one more loss we can attach to #Brexit.

    Even if #RishiSunakPM does sort out the #NorthernIrelandProtocol, I'd be very surprised if much of this business comes back to Dover;

    Another victory for the wreckers

  33. As #RishiSunakPM contemplates a partial concession to some (if not all) #publicsector strikers with near-#inflation pay settlements, its as well to recall that #JeremyHunt has frozen personal allowances until 2028, meaning that the rises will also ensure a larger proportion of the resulting final pay will be subject to #taxation... in a time of inflation but static tax allowances, we have essentially (another) tax rise, especially on the low(er) paid - so no change there, then

  35. So, CitiGroup has handed #RishiSunakPM a 'win', in that they are predicting that UK #inflation will drop swiftly to less that 3% by the end of the year... wait for Rishi to claim credit (its actually mainly linked to expected declines in #energy prices), contrasting with his claims he had nothing to do with it going up... more declaratory #politics on the way folks...

  36. So #RishiSunakPM, with #juniordoctors now voting to join the #NHSstrikes, how that game of hardball going for you?

So #SupportTheStrikes however inconvenient it is for you

#SupportOurNurses, because clapping (in the end) was a distraction...

The NHS is not safe in #Tory hands... and this is what the strikes are really about!

  37. I kinda laughed this morning reading Rishi was jetting over to NI, like he was going to fix this protocol thing... Sorry mate, you're not the guy to pull this one off.

Maybe they get it done (again), but an out of touch Tory government aren't part of the solution.

  38. As #RishiSunakPM tries to conclude the negotiations around the #NorthernIrelandProtocol, we can expect the #eurospecpitc right (inc. the #DUP) to attack him (they've already started)!

The central Q. is: is he strong enough in his position to face them down?

if not, we can expect further troubles both from the #EuropeanUnion & from across the Atlantic where #JoeBiden has made his position pretty clear on the NIP's relation to the peace in #Ireland...

    So, Rishi, how's your backbone?

  40. Looks like #Centrica (owner of #BritishGass) will confirm massively increased profits from last year... given these stem from the rise in wholesale price(s) not anything Centrica has actually done (other than control gas supply), this should be the rightful target for #windfalltaxes... these are essentially monopoly 'super profits'!

However, I won't be holding my breath! #RishiSunakPM is in their pocket!

  42. It seems #RishiSunakPM finally may(!!) be considering back-dated pay rises for #strikers in the #publicsector...

but as before this is so much hogwash if #JeremyHunt continues to hold the line that all pyrites must come from within existing/settled budgets... if so, this is just another run at defunding public services (most crucially the #NHS) & will merely shift the problem from one aspect of the (various) public services' organisation to another...

  43. Casting around for distractions from what is going on, on the ground, #RishiSunakPM tells us he will do 'whatever it takes' to deal with balloon incursions into our airspace... its a pity his fortitude doesn't stretch to the #NHSstrikes... but the #Tories are past masters at the politics of distraction, so we shouldn't be surprised Rishi has grabbed the balloon with both hands

  45. After this week's #reshuffle & 'reorganisation' of some Govt. departments, its clear that #RishiSunakPM is only concerned with giving the impression he has an 'active' government, when really (as their inability/unwillingness to engage with the real problems of the UK shows) he & the #Tories already know they are holding the fort while their kleptocrat chums loot the country ahead of the next #election... the moral corruption of the UK political elite is very much on show, for those who look!

  46. Never has the phrase 'Like moving the chairs on the deck of the Titanic' seemed more appropriate for a #reshuffle that today as #RishiSunakPM moves people around, fails to sack #DomincRaab & appoints other people to jobs they are woefully ill-equipped to do - another day in #Toryville

  47. @RichardJMurphy (at the other place) makes this crucial point about this morning's sacking of #NadhimZahawi by #RishiSunakPM:

'If you can be sacked as a minister for breaking the ministerial code then surely you are also not fit to be an MP & should be sacked from that position as well? After all, why should constituents have to be represented by people found to be unfit for public office?'

    Absolutely right!

  48. And he's out...

bye bye #NadhimZahawi, but I wonder how many weeks it will be before #RishiSunakPM proposes that Zahawi has made amends, 'paid the price' & can be reintroduced into Govt.... anyone fancy a sweepstake - I'll take 16 weeks!

    theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j

  49. As Beth Rigby of @Sky has just pointed out elsewhere:

'The decision to refer Zahawi to the ethics advisor, Sir Laurie Magnus, means that two of the PM's cabinet now under official investigation. Dominic Rabb facing eight separate bullying allegations (probe by Adam Tolley KC) & now Zahawi referred to PM's new ethics advisor'!

    #NadhimZahawi
    #DominicRaab
    #RishiSunakPM
    #ToryChaos

  50. #RishiSunakPM has now ordered his (new) ethics advisor to 'get to the bottom' of #NadhimZahawi's tax affairs, which as #DominicGrieve notes involves an unprecedented negotiation between HMRC & a sitting Chancellor!

Later this week, Sunak will say he has 'full confidence' in Zahawi before sacking him (perhaps over the weekend).

Its clear Sunak will sacrifice Zahawi to try to maintain a semblance of 'professionalism' & 'integrity' for his Govt. (although for many, that's a lost cause already)

  51. As @adamwagner1 says (over at the other place) in light of #RishiSunakPM's second #fixedpenatly fine... 'Some people will think these things are trivial but... the disregard for the law at the current top of British politics suggests they think they are above the law - that they are somehow different, and special'!

its really a classic (further) case of one law for you lost & another for us and our mates... this is not what #democracy looks like!

  52. As #RishiSunakPM says people are 'not idiots' on #taxation, its a good time to make it clear that #taxes are not 'a necessary evil' to be avoided when you can (yes I mean you #NadhimZahawi)

Taxes are the price we pay for civilisation, its how we contribute fairly (in a progressive tax system) to the general good & well-being of society.

Therefore tax is a positive good which should be celebrated as the engine that ensures we have the society we value!

We need to reject its negative portrayal!

  53. The increasingly authoritarian character of #RishiSunakPM's Govt. is clear: we've moved from an intent to constrain the right to strike now to an intent to give police the power to shut down protests for 'slow marching', doubling down on already pretty rigid constraints on protest... we really are slowly seeing this country turn into a very different country from that many of imagine we live in... the old boiling frog metaphor is increasingly at the forefront of my thoughts

  54. So #RishiSunakPM has told #SteveBarclay that if he wishes to respond to the #NHScrisis by paying #Nurses more than previously offered, he can... the catch: the Dept. Health's budget will remain the same... so Sunak is essentially using the #NursesStrike as a way of doubling down on the defunding of the #NHS as money will be transferred from other budgets to payroll, thereby worsening the crisis... of course this has nothing to do with #Tory donors' interests (see other posts yesterday & today)

  55. Q. is #RishiSunakPM's about to oversee a wide ranging U-turn on #strikes?

Already #SteveBarclay seems to have accepted (privately) that there needs to be more money for #Nurses on the table..

If the U-turn gathers pace I really hope that emboldens others to realise the #Tories are not an unstiobale/immovable force, but can be brought to heel if our collective action is robust & clearly justified!

  56. If you're wondering why #RishiSunakPM's 'reasonableness' didn't go down well with the #unions or #strikers, remember that this is a Govt. that offers a declaratory #politics while seldom changing its position, nor its ideological interest in #classwar - the only people Rishi was talking to really were the editors if the right-wing press & once that message had been broadcast, the 'negotiations' were doomed to remain moribund in the face of his desire to break #workers will!
    #SupportTheStrikes

  57. Given the amount of time taken up on the news discussing the various 'revelations' in Prince Harry's new memoirs, one cannot but help wonder whether this is really the politics of distraction...

I'm sure #RishiSunakPM is very pleased to see the #CostOfLivingCrises & #strikes pushed to the side in the news to be replaced by the 'analysis' of the #royalfamily.

  58. As the next #generalelection edges closer (however long #RishiSunakPM tries to put it off), what we will likely see is an increasing range of media stories attacking the #LabourParty generally & #KeirStarmer specifically, all amplified on #socialmedia & also via platforms like What the Papers Say & other media reviews... while the attacks may be different, the strategy tested on #Corbyn will swing into action again (although #Starmer may be better equipped to counter some of the coming torrent)

  59. Should we be testing #Chinese travellers entering UK or not?

Medical opinion seems to be that it offers little help in #covid #infection control (we have such high incidence already & Chinese variants are not substantially different) rendering #RishiSunakPM's U-Turn bringing the UK into line with other countries border health measures, merely 'performative'.

But the Q. then is, why do other countries think its worth doing?

One thing's for sure the #Tories only interest here is self-interest!
