  1. What if #Ireland put #solarPV on every suitable #socialhousing?
    💡 ~90,000–115,000 homes
💰 ~€0.6–€1.0 billion total cost
⚡ ~360–460 GWh/year generated
📊 ~1.1%–1.4% of national electricity demand
    For context:
    Ireland uses ~31,900 GWh/year
    A typical home system produces ~3,600–4,000 kWh/year
Install cost ≈ €7k–€9k per home
👉 That €1bn investment could generate ~€70m–€115m/year in energy value
Not a silver bullet: a fast scalable way to reduce #fuelPoverty, + add clean power using public assets

  3. I would desperately like to see UK government decouple the price of electricity from gas. We have just about the most expensive consumer energy prices in the world…but lazy journalism won’t get us there.

This piece is a recycled press release from a think tank…admittedly not a rightwing one, but it’s not based on the kind of research you might find in a journal.

  5. ‘We’re proud to be pioneers’: inside Spain’s community energy revolution.

Renewable energy is flourishing in Spain, a country with no gas or oil and little coal of its own, but an abundance of sunshine.

From Taradell to Galicia, cooperatives are supplying cheap, clean electricity to homes and helping tackle fuel poverty.

In the same way, Labour have bungled the issue of #fuelpoverty

The #WinterFuelAllowance was problematic, but shouldn't have been cut without a package of measures to address fuel poverty, such as insulating homes, supporting low cost heating and addressing the benefits crisis

I expect we will see a rise in deaths this winter as a result. Our hospitals are already warning they are seeing massive rises in flu which is caused by fuel poverty

  10. I know writing a letter to a newspaper won’t change a damn thing…I don’t even know who bothers to read the letters page when we have BTL commenting on most articles.

But I could think of no other medium to express myself in response to #Starmer’s words last week during #Cop29 that he will “not [be] telling people how to live their lives”.

  12. Simon Francis, a coordinator at the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said:

“The only way to bring down bills permanently is through investment in insulation, home improvements, renewables and infrastructure which will free us from volatile gas prices for ever. But in the budget, the chancellor only confirmed half the spending commitment Labour pledged in their manifesto to the warm homes plan.”

  14. Fuel poverty ‘shocker’ should power energy reform

Calum Macdonald asked if something was “just not clicking” between policy and legislation.

Using Viking Energy Windfarm as an example, Mr Macdonald said the windfarm could power up to half a million homes but its owner #SSE was given £2 million to switch off its turbines in August.

He added that fuel poverty in the isles was around 30 per cent.

  16. UK Government urged to reform energy markets and reverse cuts

#Scotland's social justice secretary has urged the UK Government to reverse the cut to the winter fuel payment, which she said has had “devastating consequences” north of the border.

Shirley-Anne Somerville said reform of the #UK #energy markets is needed and urged Westminster to take action to address the root causes of fuel poverty and volatile energy prices.

  18. @MadeyeTheCarnaptious @Indyposterboy I just got notification of the rise in October of my electricity bill. I'm already officially in #fuelpoverty I'm surrounded by wind turbines. The irony of being the nation producing the energy and paying the most because we have to buy it back
