High-altitude balloon flight OH3HAB #9 by club OH3AA on June 28th had 2 RS41 #radiosonde #Horus trackers running my RS41ng firmware (old RSM412 and new RSM425 #Vaisala models), a #Wenet photo transmitter + an experiment to have a #Meshtastic node (EFL) and a #MeshCore repeater by @OH3CUF in the payload.

There was strong #GPS interference, causing trackers to report incorrect position data - the new RS41 with multi-GNSS #ublox M10 chip did better!

Now you can configure and flash your #RS41 and #DFM17 #radiosonde with #hamradio firmware directly in a web browser (Chromium/Chrome-based, uses WebUSB).

The RS41ng configurator tool guides through the config/build/flash process and makes it fast and easy. This is just out, please give it a try:

So what can you do with a radiosonde if you find one? They can be reprogrammed with custom firmware (like https://github.com/mikaelnousiainen/RS41ng) and repurposed for amateur radio use. I am not sure whether it is a cost effective option given the many cheap ESP32-based boards available now, but appealing to reuse and recycle the waste from disposable sensors going up hundreds of times a day.

For now this one will sit as a trophy in my office though.

I recovered my first radiosonde today! Launched from Spokane, this one landed close enough to town to try to follow it, but a bit farther than predicted, so I chased it into Idaho. It landed behind a farmer's field, he drove me back in his four-wheeler to recover it after I explained what I was looking for. He may have been somewhat amused that I was looking for it on purpose, he has found them on his land before while working the fields.

Unsuccessful retrieval of #RadioSonde RS41-SG-2820672 but @vk2gpu and I managed to get a consolation prize, The radar reflector.. Unfortunately the sonde is stuck up in a 150/200 foot gum tree 😭
