i am catching a vline train next week and yes it's free, but i figure only the first train of the day (7.20 from Southern Cross) will have seats available. You can book a seat on a long distance bus (check vline website) so if you need a seat then this may be a better option. #melbourne #ptv

on free vline travel. [update] You can only book seats on long distance buses. So you need to join the service where it starts if you can. Also be prepared for the possibility that your travel cannot proceed because the service is full. Honestly I think this is a really dumb idea - the fares were already quite cheap. . #auspol #ptv [I went to the train station and had to convince them that they actually could do a booking. But eventually I got one on the bus. Not on the train though, that is first come first served.] [further update. You can book all long distance buses so they are a better choice for longer journeys)]

Leading on from yesterday here is another bad disruption notice on the Transport Victoria website.
Amongst other things, it tells people to catch a Glen Waverley train from Camberwell Station, and a Craigieburn train from Footscray Station. All completely wrong.

New tram route just dropped apparently

This page about bikes on PT in Victoria is terrible: https://transport.vic.gov.au/plan-a-journey/public-transport-tools-and-resources/travel-tips-and-resources/bringing-items-on-public-transport/bicycles-and-public-transport
Near the top is a section saying "No bikes on buses, except some coaches".
But several sections later they talk about bike racks on select bus routes.
Like they added that section later, but didn't update the bit saying *NO*

My browser (Firefox) does support map view, or would if you'd properly tested your new site. Your web site is broken, former PTV.

great to see Frankston lines run the same way around the loop all day "as of early 2026, Frankston Line trains run consistently anti-clockwise through the City Loop (Parliament to Flinders Street) all day, a change made possible by the Metro Tunnel opening" #ptv #melbourne - i remember when tourists used to ask me why the frankston line used to reverse direction around the loop and I would pause for a long time and say "i have no idea"

Public transport should be free. The fares should Not be increasing!
-
The Melbourne #PTV app desperately needs a feature for “Use GPS to figure out which train I am on, and estimate when it will arrive at each station.”
When the main you are on is late, the trip planner refuses to offer you the train you’re actually on.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-22/fears-free-ptv-will-further-strain-regional-train-services/106010924 - "will you get a seat?" I don't even try on the weekend anymore. On weekdays services I try for services around 7am. Everything else is pretty difficult. #ptv

CW: Venting | Shitty public transport running late
It makes for such a headache trying to get to house inspections and having to cancel because you're running soo late ( and you miss a connection bus or train ) losing the opportunity to secure a home..
It is such a fuvking hindrance to secure a home in this state of economy when relying on a broken public transportation system that is okay with it being 10/15 minutes late sometimes even more...
Aaaaaaaaaa

the new Melbourne subway line. It allows people in stations all the way from Sunbury to Pakenham East to travel quickly into the city. As someone who did a similar commute for 20 years this is absolutely huge. #ptv #melbourne (it opens up huge employment opportunities, for example)
-
According to https://transport.vic.gov.au/disruptions/disruptions-information there's planned works on Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines.
-
Well isn't that just dandy: the #PTV app won't let you go back once you're looking at a bus route's stopping pattern if you also use #VoiceOver.
You can't two-finger scrub to go back, because fuck letting the system manage app state, or implementing accessibility. And the back button is hidden to VO, seemingly because the stopping pattern is shown in a floating sheet over a map, and the back button is below the sheet.
Only workaround I've found is to turn on screen recognition, double-tap and hold then drag down on the sheet title (which reveals the map), turn off screen recognition, then swipe or hover to find the back button.
Gods I love #accessibility. [tired]

Wanted to reality-check an email I received today and had to type in "transport".vic.gov.au for the first time, after years of "ptv".vic.gov.au
I'm not sure why the branding change, but it's impressive that the new name is six characters longer than the old but has somehow lost the "public". The site even looks stark and cheerless, yet doesn't work any better.
Tell us you don't care without telling us you don't care.
Oh wait, now I have more gripes ...

Bus passengers of the eastern suburbs - rejoice!
Despite breaking down again yesterday, it seems that the Box Hill Bus Station escalator is back up and running today.
Have updated the counter accordingly and hopefully I can now shut up about it: https://philipmallis.com/2025/02/07/the-box-hill-bus-station-escalator-saga/
-
I'm afraid reports of the Box Hill Bus Station escalator working at lunchtime today are no longer correct.
As of 6pm it's now broken again. Guess I'll keep the counter going!
-
Hearing reports that after 134 days, the Box Hill Bus Station escalator has finally been fixed. Confirmation by yours truly to come shortly.

Another Easter, another lot of incorrect and unclear public transport service information. A good summary of the errors is given in this article from the Bus & Coach Society of Victoria: https://bcsv.org.au/vm/public-holiday-buses/

It only took 132 days but a disruption is finally showing on the PTV app. Better late than never I guess!
-
Another thing with the ongoing Box Hill Bus Station escalator situation is the absolutely abysmal wayfinding and passenger information. These photos here show the only two signs on display at the bus station.
The first is completely wrong on all counts. The escalators aren't "being upgraded", they're broken. No work is being done to fix them and this certainly doesn't count as an "upgrade".
Worse, the directions on the sign are completely wrong. It looks like it's been moved from another part of the shopping centre with no thought given to its relevance.
The second sign is factually correct but is unnecessarily passive aggressive (why underline "any"...), is poorly sited and far too small. It's also poorly worded - I can guarantee that almost nobody knows where the "South Professional Suites" are located.
After 100 days of the only escalator being broken at one of the busiest bus interchanges in Victoria the very least we can expect is to be kept informed and treated with a little bit of dignity. There has been more than adequate time to at least plan this serious disruption a lot better.
-
It looks like that the other escalator at Box Hill Bus Station has now broken. People are now forced to walk up.
EDIT: as of 6pm the up escalator is working again
We're also approaching 100 days since the down escalator broke down. Still no ETA on when it will be fixed and the conditions for passengers are still poor.
