Taxi + ride-hailing app services, run as platform co-ops in some places. But maybe councils could supply apps which aggregate rides from a range of vetted services? Including those that specialise in transporting the disabled?
It's akin to the way a competent council can supply public shopping areas, with a range of independently run food places All of which are inspected for anything that might poison you.

The sudden and unexpected shuttering of mtrx.nz and peertube.nz in the last couple of weeks is a stark reminder of how ephemeral community-hosted services can be. In the absence of third options, people are stuck with technical infrastructure offered either by corporations, or by informal group of volunteers. Who have every right to walk away at any time, leaving the people hosted on their servers scrambling for a replacement.

#FreeOurFeeds – help secure the future of social media
We are determined to free social media from billionaire control
Social media once promised to be a global public square, connecting communities and sparking creativity. Yet it is now under the control of a few billionaires, used to advance their own political and business objectives.
Building on the foundation built by the BlueSky team, we are launching project #FreeOurFeeds to create a new future for social media, that gives power and choice back to people.
Free Our Feeds will establish a new, independent foundation to secure the future of social media with independent infrastructure and an ecosystem of innovation and applications on top of open technology.
The funds will be used to:
- Launch a public interest foundation that will work to support making Bluesky’s underlying tech (the AT Protocol) fully resistant to billionaire capture;
- Build independently hosted infrastructure (a second ‘relay’) so that Bluesky users, developers and researchers always have full access to the stream of content and data no matter what the company decides to do in future;
- Our bigger fundraising goal, of $30m in 3 years, will enable us to further develop the AT Protocol and create a fund for developers so they can build a wealth of social applications on top of open protocols to make social media a healthier and happier place.

This interview by @social.coop/@daspitzberg of Joshua Danielson helped us think about the pitfalls around running "platform co-ops" generally.

[First Plenary](https://ngiforum2023.eu/agenda/):
Adriana Groh ( @adrianacerna I think?) from @sovtechfund mentions how Platforms Cooperatives offer an opportunity to challenge the new giants of companies such as Uber. #platformCoops

@tess Marc Andreessen is a market fundamentalist who benefits from unicorns and bigtech winner-takes-all "startups". Meanwhile he doesn't acknowledge how much he and his enterprises take from the #commons, doesn't want to know how technology is certainly not neutral. Who owns/controls a internet standard matters, as it has a network effect, monopolising or levelling the playing field. Enfin, I'm happy to count me on his enemies list. #ethicaltech #platformcoops #publicvalues #opensource #privacy

@afewbugs Totally! Someone who sets up coops and mutuals for a living when I was asking for his views on #platformcoops once advised me something like: "set up a worker coop, yes, always! But a user-coop? All you will do is empower retired people, those with private-wealth, and people who like the sound of their own voice, to decide everything."

@adamgreenfield @liaizon I like the idea of community-run infrastructure of ALL kinds. I don’t understand why so many of the interactions and transactions that happen between peers (eg hailing a taxi, renting an apartment) seem to involve two people of moderate means paying a commission to a billionaire. I think we can change that. #platformcoops

What kind of movements and organizations would benefit from working with (or within) #PlatformCoops? Turns out: almost everyone! Read this exploration, written by our colleague Carolyn: https://www.commonsnetwork.org/2022/12/12/platform-coops-but-for-whom/

The #platformcoop movement should not just ask what big and old #coops can do to help #platformcoops; but also, what #platformcoops can do to help the ordinary rank-and-file members of big and old #coops.

...I still haven't read that book (nor have I bought it yet), but maybe I should...
I am exited for #platformcooperativism / #platformCoops ever since I heard about it via #Fairmondo. -
Totally. I'm considering writing a case on why sites like Yelp should be #platformcoops owned by the businesses reviewed and/or users doing the reviewing.
Bit difficult due to a large amount of conflicting information.
