“We’re only going 3 blocks, you won’t need your bike cameras.”
Immediately gets close passed. 🙃

The rains that were forecast for the #WA long weekend have finally arrived. Perfectly timed for returning #perthdrivers to turn the major roads into traffic jams and demolition derbies. #Perth

Oh the timing,
Road Safety Commission Western Australia this morning:Drivers must follow these rules to keep all road users safe:
• 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 pass cyclists or eRiders before turning left – wait for them to pass before making a turn.
• 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 turn left from the right lane except where permitted.
• If you need to cross a bike lane to turn left, you must give way to riders using the lane.
• Always check your blind spots for riders and indicate your intentions before turning or overtaking. This mornings #BikeCommute I get the exact example they described.

Perth drivers really struggle with roundabouts.
#BikeCommute home today was spiced up with a driver racing to beat me to a roundabout only to then drive in front of a turning SUV and get T boned.
Had they waited the handful of seconds for me to clear the roundabout they would've avoided crashing, but its always a race to be in front of a cyclist.

Close pass bike commuting this morning. Definitely not 1.5m legal distance. Bottom center of picture is my mud guard. #perthdrivers #cycling

Driver in 4x4 pulling out of driveway nearly hits me as I’m signaling to turn: Oh sorry I didn’t see you.
Me: I’m in high viz how can you not see me!?
Driver: hey I just apologized what more do you want?!
Me: mate you could’ve killed me.All this just after bike camera battery dies.

CW Vehicular caused death
Driver of 4x4 kills 90 yr old trying to cross road on mobility scooter.
Stop removing the driver from the incident reporting, its not an autonomous vehicle.
Behind paywall.

‘Massive burden’: Perth ranked one of world’s most car-dependent cities

CW: vehicular murder
My deepest sympathies to the #cyclists family and friends.

Witnessed a teen on an escooter riding on the wrong side of the road this afternoon, as they were on their way to their after school job.
Its hard enough to educate/expect driverists to follow the road rules or MSM to report drivers running over cyclist as anything other than a collision, but choosing to ride on the wrong side of a road, even a quiet one, doesnt help anyone. -
Bad infrastructure creates bad driving.
Sussex St and Mooregate St East Victoria Park
Driver of small hatchback failed to stop at a stop sign while Im turning. The intersection itself doesnt enforce correct driving as stop sign is a full car length behind curb.
A square cut speed hump at the stop line 'might' encourage drivers to stop.

Different way to end my #bikecommute home week. Hit and run by a driver.
Driver failed to giveway to #cyclist on roundabout. It was low speed so thankfully only minor injuries. Bike has buckled rear wheel and scratched rear frame. Hopefully carbon frame isnt cracked.
Going to get bike into shop hopefully tomorrow.
Police report in so now we just wait. #cycling #biketooter #perth #perthdrivers

My week of jinxed #bikecommuting is continuing...
This morning a driver did a no look pull out in front of me.
Im seriously considering taking tomorrow off so I can end this jinx.
-
Ive had a double whammy of a day on the bike. Close pass this morning from a bus and then this afternoon another close pass from a hearse.
Yes. A hearse. With a coffin in the back.
Maybe business is a little slow so perhaps bumping off a cyclist would help... doubtful if you use the company car though.
-
I’ve jinxed myself this week with #bikecommute This morning a close pass by bus.
Driver had opportunity to pass safely with the slip lane but chose not to.
#transperth contacted, will no doubt get email of ‘thanks, have spoken to driver..’
-
Another impatient driverist, hopping curb onto cycle path to get around the traffic so he could get in the traffic on the highway sooner.
Police report made. I reported 2 at same spot earlier this year, both were cautioned.
Im thinking a few bollards would help.
-
Hey Perth drivers can you be predictable and follow the road rules?
Ah, that’s a no then.
-
This afternoons shenanigans. Driver of 4x4 failed to give way to everyone on road and pulled out into road having to clip curb to turn around the turning car. Total brain fade at a guess.
-
The joys of infrastructure that doesnt suit cyclist. Close pass on Berwick street at Hillview tce intersection. I feel this is an infrastructure fail, no bike lane means drivers dont know how to act as I continue straight. Im going to have to indicate Im travelling straight from now on at this location.
Other side of intersection there is a gutter with bike symbol, the cross road has a large painted bike lane yet Berwick has only gutters.

When you cant wait a few seconds to pass a cyclist so you drive into oncoming traffic just so you can be first through the roundabout. What a pool noodle.
-
Here’s the curb cut, by the way. Behind that arch. I count four cars on the lane blocking access to it.

Another day, another line of cars in the bike lane. They are blocking the curb cut needed to get to the segregated path.

Strava segment called SUV roundabout roulette. Driver close passes instead of waiting 10 seconds for on coming traffic. #cycling #bikecommute #BikeTooter #perth #perthdrivers #wankpanzer

Drivers: cyclists should stay on the footpath.
Also drivers: I’m using the footpath too so suck it.***UPDATE - Police contacted to say they are looking to caution the drivers. Hoon report works quicker than crimestopper report

Drivers: Cyclists should wear high viz and flashing lights for their safety.
Drivers on foggy morning: I can see why should I turn my headlights on.

my bike broke on Tuesday, (rear hub failed) so have been back commuting by car & OMG, the quality of #perthdrivers is appalling. No doubt it was always this bad but after a year cycling instead it really hits home how bad it is. #cycling #bikecommute #perth

Last day of school term and I jinxed myself thinking that I might get hit by a driver on way home. Thankfully not hit but 2 close passes in under 2 minutes. #bikecommute #perthdrivers #wankpanzer #brodozer

Americanisation — Australians are known for hating it
We as a country are hating on truck sized SUV's and Im all for it.

Novel police report this morning.
Gent sitting in his car having a big hit of the cannabis before heading off to work. Wanders across the lane after passing me. Thank goodness for the safety paint....😂
-
You lost mate?
Classic #CarBrain albeit on a Vespa, rider instead of using the road network, chose to use a shared path detour to cross a tight pedestrian bridge with a weight limit through river bushland at the Canning River.

Cyclist rant:
Dear drivers, if a cyclist is not in a 'cycle lane' (behind a painted line in the gutter) its because the 'cycle lane' is unsafe. If the cyclist is in 'your lane' (the road) next to a traffic island, (now here's the important bit), DONT FUCKING TRY AND PASS THEM.
a human life is worth more than 5 seconds of 'inconvenience'.
Video footage to follow.

That’s 2022 work finished. A year of challenges. The biggest was one I set for myself. I chose to reduce my carbon footprint by riding to work. I hadn’t been on a bike since high school but undaunted I picked up a 2nd hand hybrid bike. 16kg of bike plus panniers, loaded with a ‘gaming’ laptop (big screen, big battery and charger), lunch and a change of clothes.
I started out on bike paths and back roads, got a puncture on a trial run that lead to an ongoing series of punctures over the first 6 weeks of term. I wasn’t sure if this cycling thing was going to work out.
I kept at it, getting more used to the roads and sought smoother and shorter routes. I soon found that #perthdrivers don’t like to share the roads so I picked up #cycliq front & rear cameras. I switched to a backpack for better aero and bought a road bike.
I rode 5769 km this year, 4k of that on the hybrid. Not bad for not riding since high school.
I saved 1.6t of CO2 from not driving to work & gained a firsthand experience of how car centric culture kills cities & communities. I did this to see if I could, I won’t go back to car centric life and happy to champion transit solutions that are for the many and not the few.

When you snap a picture of the perfect example of unsafe cycling conditions:
Close pass from van and broken glass across the shoulder (no stopping zone) of the road in front of cyclist.
This road seems to do drivers heads in, they simply cannot wait a few seconds to go around safely because there are trees in the islands of the road.
