The PDF Association @PDFassociation announced their "all-new" Product Showcase in January. The new interface provides an improved search, and the ability to search by product types, standards, and features.
For example, you can search for only open source or no-cost solutions. Or ones that offer Tagged PDF or PDF/UA-1 or 2. Or filter the results to only list those who offer "Remediate Tagged PDF" service.

@skye @pkiff Perhaps this might be helpful:
PDF/UA – a structured PDF especially suited for accessibility.LibreOffice (free software for Win, Mac and Linux) supports and exports PDF/UA.
Some time ago I wrote an article about how to get accessible PDF out of LibreOffice.
For your task you only have to take care of the doc title, the language setting, headlines, text and proper lists.

Does anyone have experience of creating accessible PDF files using the old InDesign 8.1/CS6 software?
I can create the missing PDF/UA markup using an ExifTool script on a Mac, but will CS6 (InDesign v8.1) be sufficient for structural accessibility? Or will I encounter limitations?
Is the current version of InDesign significantly better?

@djwudi Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts. I haven't taken the new Affinity for a test drive yet, but I'm hoping that the new integration of components gave them a chance to rework the native file format and code.
Old Canva was very frustrating for PDF tagging and accessibility, despite years of work to improve it. I always figured that part of Canva's challenge came from technical debt owing to not having had accessibility in mind at the start.

Annoyed that assisting technologies refer to text in images as figure?
This was due to limitations with PDF/UA-1.Now PDF/UA-2 is more flexible and allows to tag images (containing text) as Paragraph, Span, Label or Formula.
Paul Rayius wrote about this on PDF Association.
[Do you know authoring softwares that already supports PDF/UA-2?]

Problem with special characters - PDF/UA - Screenreader:
I ran into a problem with two glyphs – 🅭 and 🅯 – when creating an accessible PDF. Text set in Source Sans 3.
Tests with InDesign/MadeToTag export and LibreOffice PDF/UA export show the following:
The PDF(s) pass the PDF/UA checks with PAC and pdfToolbox but 🅭 and 🅯 are not read aloud e.g. by Acrobat. Is this a known issue?
🅭 (1F16D - CIRCLED CC)

Shawn Jordison (aka "The Accessibility Guy") reviews the accessibility of PDFs output by two online design platforms: Canva and Venngage.
Anyone familiar with PDFs generated by Canva won't be surprised by its failures. By contrast, Venngage can output a PDF/UA compliant file.
There's a YouTube video along with a text summary. Tiny warning: some may find the video visually distracting with too much background music (!)

@ChanceyFleet The @PDFassociation offers some accessible PDFs.
Their Matterhorn Protocol provides a testing model for PDFs, and the protocol doc itself conforms to PDF/UA-1. [1]
Their Tagged PDF Best Practices Guide also follows best practices. [2]
But it's definitely hard to find good examples of accessible PDFs in the wild! Which says a lot about the problems with PDF format.

New PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker) released on 18 April:
Version 2024.2 is a minor update with bug fixes and a handful of improvements including:
- new interface language options
- improved display on small screens
- ability to double-click a summary check and jump to that section in detailed reportPAC is a free PDF accessibility checker for Windows that performs automated checks against many PDF/UA and some WCAG criteria.

Finally, in case you missed earlier posts from last month, here are links to the official sources for the two new PDF standards that these other resources relate to:

One thing I realized in reading through the new standards and looking at various sample files this week is that I should probably spend some time learning LaTeX! Both LaTeX and @libreoffice are already capable of producing PDF/UA-2 files, and with some tweaking, LaTeX can produce what appear to be really good WTPDF files. Kudos to both those development teams!

Last month saw the release of PDF/UA-2 (PDF for Universal Accessibility) and Well-Tagged PDF (WTPDF) standards - neither of which revokes PDF/UA-1. And those are all different from PDF 1.7 vs 2.0. To many, the landscape of PDF specs may now seem littered with confusing acronyms and versions!
For help disentangling it all, the @PDFassociation has a Questions and Answers about Tagged PDF:

@julientaq Since paged.js is open source, I'm happy to do a spot check once or twice using the free PDF Accessibility Checker (PAC) [1] and to flag glaring issues missed by PAC. But I can't be part of your ongoing quality assurance workflow (!).
I've tested Chrome PDFs before, but don't have a test suite set up for them. Their quality depends heavily on the complexity of the taggable elements in your HTML.
-
@julientaq @spaceninja Do you happen to know how well those might support PDF/UA or WCAG 2 standards for accessible PDFs? Anything that doesn't is a non-starter for me.
iText and PrinceXML both claim to support PDF/UA.
On the WeasyPrint site, they also claim to be able to produce PDF/UA compliant files. I wonder if anyone knows of examples I might look at?
I don't see any mention of accessibility in vivliostyle or paged.js.
