  1. In April 1938 the Midland Region of the BBC broadcast the first episode of Send For Paul Temple, an experimental radio serial written by Francis Durbridge (pictured). Each episode was repeated the following day on the National Service. The serial received 7,500 letters of appreciation, and a second adventure for Paul Temple was written and on the air within five months.

  2. In the early and mid-1950s Bill Bailey then Philip Mendoza drew the Paul Temple comic strip in the London Evening News. John McNamara picked up the pencil in 1956 and continued through to the series’ close in 1971.

  3. Paul Temple appeared in many formats: novels, comic strips, radio plays, films and a television series. Steve, Paul Temple’s wife, was played by a variety of actresses, but for facial similarity I think this strip drawn by John McNamara in December 1962 and Ros Drinkwater in the television series in 1970 come closest.

Promoting their forthcoming Paul Temple comic strip, the London Evening News highlighted Steve, Paul Temple’s wife. Although her name was Louise, she was constantly referred to as Steve, a reference to her journalistic pen name, Steve Trent.

Starring Francis Matthews and Ros Drinkwater, the Paul Temple television series, a BBC-Taurus Films co-production, ran from 1969-71. Fifty-two programmes were made, but many were later lost or destroyed.

Each episode took ten days to film, with a one-month break each year.

  7. I'm thinking of getting back into my BBC radio shows. There are still a few episodes of Paul Temple that I must finish. Can anyone recommend others? I like plays (usually classics or ones set in fantacy lands or Ruritania, things about the upper class, the Regency, historical documentaries, nature, science fiction, strange or unusual stories, children's programmes, etc. I generally like happy stories. I have no interest in war (unless it's history), violence, obscenities, what some call gritty realism, politics, and so on. My goal is almost always to listen to and to collect things in Received Pronunciation, and extra points if it's Upper RP.
