Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #packman, aggregated by home.social.

  1. Tried to upgrade #openSUSE #Tumbleweed. Got some weird errors because #Packman has some syncing issues or something.

Read a post that said "You don't need Packman anyway these days! Just use distro libraries unless you're doing something unusual"

Switched packages back. Tried playing a video. "Nope - no h264 support".

Awesome. So "watching a video" is considered "unusual" by some people 🙄

(Yes, it's a patent-encumbered codec, but if even DECODING the average video that you get DRM-free from GOG is "unusual" then you're only doing very boring stuff on your machine!)

  12. @knoppix95 @opensuse it is a good news but the lack of #packman repo is slowing down its deployment. Multimedia codecs is a must for many users. Or is it out by now?

  17. @unixviking @darth

I am using #Tumbleweed with KDE since years without big problems on several machines (Notebooks, NUC Mini PC). Great distri with latest software and kernel.

Missing stuff can be installed via #Packman repos or #Flatpak (and e.g. KDE UI called Discover). Zypper has recently been improved in terms of speed (parallel downloads etc.).

  22. 2/ Disagree? How many dependency problems and borked systems arise from adding #packman repos just 'cause someone said you should (when it would have been much, much more advisable to install the #flatpak version of say, Firefox instead)? How many Arch installs broken by a long list of packages installed from the AUR?

  25. Busy on weekdays and just checked the mailing list and found out it's #openSUSE #Tumbleweed's Mesa package (strictly speaking it's #Packman's) which made the system fails to render fonts and mouse cursor.

Been speculating whether it's my new TV's fault (but Windows is actually normal). I know Windows has loads of other problems but still, Linux users have this from time to time.

Luckily I recovered from old snapshot using snapper and ditch Packman's Mesa package, everything is fine again.

  32. In my case, I had to install ffmpeg-6 (while removing ffmpeg-5) to get the apps to work with codecs again pmbs.links2linux.org/request/s #openSUSE #Packman #linux #gstreamer #ffmpeg

  34. Listening to Neal Gompa talking at the @opensuse conference about #multimedia.

Personally I'm a happy #Packman user, but it's nice to know that with the help of #Cisco openSUSE now has a lot better H.264/AVC codec support out of box.
