  1. I don't have to poke journalctl very much. But I'm trying to see whether Gnome Shell is logging anything. And… it's not helpful 😐

I thought I'd be able to filter with `-u gnome-shell`. But apparently that's only for Systemd units. And Gnome Shell isn't one. So all of those logs that are prefixed `gnome-shell[pid]:` can't be trivially filtered with the clearly-documented commands.

Apparently you need the SUPER well documented `journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=gnome-shell` option 🙄

  2. Okay. Looks like it might be an extension problem. There's cases going back to at least 2021.

Which means that my options are "don't have dynamic workspaces" or "have crap, useless, 'stack the windows on top of each other' window placement behaviour" 😑

  3. Just realised that my Gnome desktop has stopped dynamically allocating workspaces. So I start with two. Put my music player on the second workspace. And it doesn't create a third 😐

Settings are correct. And forcing a static 3 workspaces works. It just isn't being dynamic.

This _may_ explain why the Smart AutoMove NG extension isn't moving my media player to the second workspace automatically. Possibly.

  4. Computer Science for 60+ years: We've made these machines that can follow instructions EXACTLY and do it consistently and repeatedly at high speed. And they're getting faster AND smaller OR more power-efficient!

Computer Science for the last few years: What if we THROW ALL THAT AWAY and instead we make it so that you've got to imprecisely and inefficiently tell the machine what to do AND WHAT NOT TO DO, and every response is a crapshoot as to whether it a) works, b) gives the same answer as before and c) isn't making stuff up. Please don't compare energy bills.

  5. Unfortunately, today's work required me to edit the part of the system that calls OpenAI. And…

I don't think I can overstate just how much I *hate* every single interaction with GenAI. It's viscerally unpleasant and actively soul-destroying.

If my choice is between interacting with a turn-of-the-millennium Flash site or prompting a chat bot then I'm taking the Flash site. Every. Single. Time.

If my career options end up as "continue to be a Data Engineer but you've got to do everything with GenAI now" or "become a Windows SysAdmin for a secondary school (11-16 year olds)" then the ONLY thinking I'm doing is "what needs to change so that we can afford the pay cut" 😐

  6. A court in Bremen, Germany, has ruled that shrinkflation of chocolate bars breaks competition law and cheats customers! (At least when Milka kept the packaging the same)

  7. I can't believe that one of the schools managed to get Sir David Attenborough to stand there at their spring for over a week. He's 100 years old! You can't do that to a centenarian!

  8. Mozilla has an article on "Creative Purpose at the Dawn of AI"

Surely it's the same as it's always been? If you have a creative purpose then you're creative.

If you generate GenAI slop and call it "art" then you have zero creative purpose and can fuck right off with any claims of being an "artist" and admit that you're a commissioner or director AT BEST.

But this is a Mozilla article, of course. So it's all "AI is fine if you just pretend that you're using it differently!" 🙄

  9. CW: Slight Myst 4 spoiler (and hint link)

WTF? I'm playing 4. I'm in Haven (the nature area). There's lemur-like things on one of the pillars, and some handles to turn to create noises.

As expected, you need to make noises to clear the creatures so that you can see the column properly. But it's literally just "good luck getting the timings right with a very sensitive UI where the grab area is small and both duration _and_ timing are important" 😐

This is probably one of the dumbest ever puzzles. I'm going to assume that I can get the remaining pillar clues and ignore this one.

  10. Playing Myst 4.

I think I finished Spire. It feels like I missed something, but I did the spider chair and everything.

I'm now exploring Haven and I'm at the "this mechanism needs the right symbols" and "I've seen some of those symbols" phase with a side of "but I don't know the order and I can't seem to do anything to reveal the ones that I know are in a place but need an action to reveal them" 😐

  11. There. Finished my "Classic" Noise Marine (the plastic remake)

    Sharp highlights: check.
    Purple-pink armour: check.
    Leopard print shoulder pad: check.
    Emperor's Children chapter badge: check.
    Stomped boring Ultramarines helmet: check.

  12. Started painting the redesigned Noise Marine with guitar. I'm going for an Emperor's Children look, with leopard print making it in on one shoulder pad as a homage to the classic scheme.

Going harder on the highlights than I've done before. Started with Xerus Purple over black, then used (very) old Imperial Purple for highlights (ironically!)

And it's obviously going to be an Ultramarines helmet under his boot, because what's more fitting than excess stomping vanilla? 😈
