  3. How can a knitting book based on Lord of the Rings NOT HAVE HOBBIT VESTS!?!? Lord of the Knits does not have a SINGLE vest pattern even though Samwise Gamgee CLEARLY wears one in the movies!

They have puppets and MITTENS even though the Fellowship didn't even wear mittens - hell, you didn't get them to even wear hats to stay warm!
(Helmet doesn't count that would just freeze your brain worse)

  5. WHEN THE INTERNET
    STOPPED BEING HOME 💎

One of the best uses I have found for AI is avoiding fifteen-minute YouTube videos containing ninety seconds of useful information and thirteen minutes of a man clearing his throat in public.

I give AI the video transcript.

It gives me the important points.

    No dramatic build-up.

    No repeated warnings.

No “please smash the subscribe button.”

No creator taking one perfectly decent idea and stretching it until it needs medical attention.

This suits me because I saw the problem with online performance and time-wasting a long time ago.

For me, it began with Facebook.

In the beginning, Facebook felt like a place where people simply turned up and spoke to one another.

    It was great.

Real groups formed, people found one another, and there was no constant feeling that a machine was standing behind everyone controlling the conversation.

    Then the algorithms turned up.

    Some things were buried.

Other things were pushed into your face while wearing a fluorescent hat.

People began adjusting themselves for reach, often unconsciously.

    More outrage.

    More exposure.

    More certainty.

    More performance.

The conversation was no longer simply between friends.

There was always a machine in the room deciding who would be seen, who would vanish, and which emotional breakdown had the best engagement potential.

That was when Facebook stopped feeling like a home to me.

YouTube quickly went the same way.

A person may begin with something real to say, genuine talent, knowledge or curiosity.

Then the platform teaches them to stretch, tease, repeat, brand and perform.

Eventually, the pay-me persona slips in and takes over.

The talent may still be there.

But now you have to tunnel through the sponsorship, the thumbnail face, the fake urgency and the sacred algorithm before you reach it.

I would rather hear the truth in two minutes than watch someone marinate in the stretched-out version for twenty.

So now I outsource the slop.

    I keep the useful bits.

    And I keep my morning.

  7. Et tu, Brute?

I suppose it comes as a bit of a shock to Farage as The Times, just as most of the MSM (BBC included), have simply refused to look at the reality behind the mans finances and behaviour. Maybe it is because Murdoch has decided he will be a loser?

  9. Not a film review

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ appears to be getting good reviews. And of course a vociferous group are damning it for not being realistic. A black actor as Helen, no subtitled Ancient Greek — the horror the horror 🤔. I have not been to the cinema for a couple of years, and may never see it, but the outrage is all highly amusing.

  11. PEOPLE OF EARTH

I may have lost contact with the people of Earth.

The Labor Party used to be cooler. People seemed less managed, less branded, less terrified of saying the wrong thing.

I miss something about the 70s and 80s.

    Not everything. God no.

But there was a rawness then. We talked to each other. No social media. No permanent performance. No algorithm training everyone into public outrage, victimhood stardom, mob righteousness, or personal marketing.

Just people, in whatever configuration we happened to arrive in.

The early Pride marches in Sydney. Bodies in the street. Fear, courage, music, awkwardness, sex, politics, friendship, bad hair, good boots.

Life was not yet owned by screens. Screens were still a novelty, and modern algorithms hadn’t been invented yet.

Now everyone seems to be influencing, curating, defending, accusing, branding, reacting, or recovering from being reacted to.

I am aware this is still a lot of words for the average modern thumb.

    But I’m 70. I remember paragraphs.

    I don’t hate the present.

But I do miss the ordinary human mess before it all became slop.

  13. A quotation from Salman Rushdie

At its most effective, the censor’s lie actually succeeds in replacing the artist’s truth. That which is censored is thought to have deserved censorship. Boat-rocking is deplored.

  17. FLASH PACKAGING

A lot of things marketed as pleasure are really just agitation with flash packaging.

The actions described in *Science* strike me as a #racist, #anti-ethnic #outrage, & as a #medical #editor, this angers me: the #NIH & #NASA are restricting US #researchers from coauthoring research papers with #foreign #scientists. science.org/content/article/u- I've always enjoyed editing research papers for physician–researchers around the world.

  30. Ah, the UK Government, bless their bureaucratic hearts, finally decided to give Palantir the boot. 🚪🤖 Don't you just love when the only drama is in the 800 words of someone pretending to be outraged over something you can Google in five seconds? 🙄🔍
