And our #opensprinkler is working daylight hours again. I went out late at night and it was watering the front garden. I thought it had to be a plumbing issue, but with #homeautomation in play, it was actually #DNS failure leading to #NTP protocol failure, leading to it being "midday" for the front garden.. #IOT ... a thing of beauty

Half our home is run by #raspberrypi machines which are a beautiful solution until they break. The weak point is the SD card. It takes just long enough between failure that my poor documentation skills mean I have no idea how the OS was configured as I try to rebuild it. Currently rebuilding an #opensprinkler system and I accidentally upgraded to 64 bit when I rebuilt the kernel, so the binary won't work. Rebuilding the binary broken because.... stuff changes./ C++ 12. I can rebuild from the repo but in their infinite wisdom, they regularly change the binary file format so I'm about to lose my garden watering settings. .. but this only happens every 3 or 4 years. The other sprinkler has been up for 500+ days, checking forecast and keeping garden efficiently watered. It's a tradeoff... but might document things this time..

Got back to shore..but man. The root problem was a mechanically stuck valve. The pi had a latent problem with a corrupted file system but it was otherwise fine till I rebooted it and that ended the life of that linux distro. I did manage to fish out the config files. The lovely folks over at #opensprinkler love binary file formats (that change :() so after rebuilding the pi from scratch, I rebuilt the garden watering program from scratch :( and then the valve was still stuck .. #software #gardening

@jakob ad Alternativen: wir haben hier als Nachfolger für eine Gardena-Bewässerungssteuerung einen #OpenSprinkler mit einem vorhandenen Raspberry Pi. Ist aber schon der zweite Sprinkler seit wir hier wohnen und auch mit den Ventilen ist es nicht immer ganz glatt gegangen, inzwischen tuts aber. Kann unterschiedliche Bewässerungen und holt sich das Wetter von der Wetterstation der Nachbarn. Ob es wirklich besser als Gardena ist, kann ich leider nicht beurteilen, hab ich nicht verfolgt.

Woo! - finished up a 9 month journey to replace one <expletive> garden sprinkler with an #opensprinkler raspberry pi controller. This project triggers every form of imposter syndrome I can muster, drilling holes, plumbing, soldering, 3dprinting, wiring. It's a healthy break from running virtual machines inside docker instances. The final push involved soldering, a lot of teflon tape, 3 different pipe standards, and finally RTFM when the bloody thing wouldn't switch on. Updated the docs and now I can sit back and have the sprinkler check the weather forecast and adjust the watering all by itself.

Frage an die #Garten-Spezialisten hier: Wenn ich mit #opensprinkler ein Magnetventil (24V, Hunter oder so) ansteuern will - dann brauche ich _nur_ Kabel zu Opensprinkler und keinen weiteren Stromanschluß, richtig? Ich überlege wie ich meinen Garten von Gardena wegbekomme...

Der #RaspberryPi, auf dem unser #OpenSprinkler läuft, ist heute während der Bewässerung gecrashed. Wenn man diesem #IoT Zeug nicht dauernd auf die Finger schaut, macht es Unsinn und setzt uns die Terrasse unter Wasser.

Note2Self: rausfinden, ob man auch irgendwie überwachen kann, wieviel Wasser verbraucht wird, weil ein Crash ist billig zu entdecken, ein kaputtes Ventil (hatten wir auch schon) nicht so sehr.

@msbellows I am about to finally deploy an #opensprinkler setup I started 6 months ago. The week I started that project the atmospheric rivers started so I fully expect another series of storms in a few weeks if I get it up and running.

This is the weekend I was going to finally deploy the #opensprinkler controller. .Seems about right #cawx (you can thank this little project for our bountiful rain lately)
