  1. Mason Prentiss (1816-1881), was a gunsmith, machinist, and inventor in Washington County, New York. He patented his first vise in 1868. The Prentiss Vise was arguably the most popular vise ever produced, and continued in production into the 1950s. It is still popular and widely collected.

My great grandfather’s 18” jointer hand plane. I think it was made around 1910.

I flattened the sole — that took awhile.

I’m using it here with a shallow-angled jig holding two very thin panels for a guitar I built. The plane is being used to make the edges extremely flat so the panels can be glued edgewise.

The shallow-angle on the jig is so that the actual cutting point traverses the plane knife so that the edge dulls evenly.

  3. Thinking about building myself a version of Schwarz’s Anarchist’s Tool Chest, and doing an inventory of my tools since this’ll be my largest project. Noticed I still haven’t taken the pits out of my ~1917 Disston No 4. Took a few passes on its flanks today, and ran the triangle along its teeth. Still looks fantastic for its age.

  4. Look what fell into my pickup, this week. 🙂 It had one previous owner and then sat on a shelf for a few decades.

  5. Another nice tool I got in the auction was this fine Keen Kutter hatchet. The head seems to have rarely been used and the handle is just in bad shape from lack of care.

  7. I bought a wooden tool chest "full of wooden boxes" last week. I'll share the boxes here as I take a look at each one this coming week. The first one is this. Does anyone have the tool for this box?
That last line is Saginaw, Mich U.S.A.

  8. I bought a 16# tent peg hammer head at a recent auction. It'll be a helpful weight as needed, or a desktop paperweight!

  10. This little beauty was hidden in one of the boxes of tools I got at the online auction last week.

    Never opened.
    Never used.
Even instruction booklet has never been removed.

    Sweet.

  13. Tool restoration project #2 - a Stanley No. 144 ratcheting brace. I got a bit keen and didn't take any before photos, but it was covered in rust, and the maker's marks were not visible, so discovering it to be an England-made piece is a bit of a find.

  14. To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.

  16. Beautiful extensive jewelry mold with infusion systems. It's made of limestone in the pyramid shape.
There are five sides with carved patterns of a spectacle fibula, a double axe pendant, and other round ornaments for pendants, earrings etc.
The mold was found in Methone, Greece, Macedonia. It's dated to the 8th-7th century BCE.
