And there you have it! Now this weekend is going to go in sharpening the blade and giving it a whirl

I was missing a couple tips here to set the new #Record No. 4 #handplane right for #woodworking and oooooh boy does the frog/moth size adjustment make a difference after already flattening the iron and making the chip breaker fit tight(er)!
I can now plane over twisted, torn-out, knotty pine boards and still get good shavings

My great grandfather’s 18” jointer hand plane. I think it was made around 1910.
I flattened the sole — that took awhile.
I’m using it here with a shallow-angled jig holding two very thin panels for a guitar I built. The plane is being used to make the edges extremely flat so the panels can be glued edgewise.
The shallow-angle on the jig is so that the actual cutting point traverses the plane knife so that the edge dulls evenly.

I’m using the vintage Stanley / Bailey #handplane to flatten some red oak stair nosings after ripping them on my crappy table saw. At the rate I’m going it will take awhile. I had an epiphany and started saving the wood shavings rather than trashing them. They’ll make great fire starter while camping.
The workshop used to be a chicken coop.

Final build on the semi-restored circa 1910-1918 #Bailey No. 4 #handplane for #woodworking. Probably not collector level. One of the previous owners etched their initials in the side, but I don’t care. I think it gives it character. Took a _lot_ more time than I thought it would, but I learned a lot.
I’ve put it to work in my tiny shop. Thank you to all of the people who previously commented and offered advice.

#WIP I’m doing a partial restore of a vintage #bailey hand plane for #woodworking. Starting to repaint the base. Reglued, sanded & oiled the tote which had split about 1/3 way up. The blade is in bad shape and may not be original. My goal is a usable, interesting tool.

A bit of Scotland turned up here in Colorado - a wood-bodied "coffin smoother" made by A. Mathieson & Sons in Glasgow sometime between 1890-1900 (best guess), not far from where my mom grew up. In fantastic condition, can't wait to put it back to work after a quick sharpening of the iron.
Best guess on dating based on http://www.hansbrunnertools.com/Mathieson2ndedition.pdf
(not too worried about it if I'm wrong about the dating, don't see this as a collectible as much as it's a cool piece of history that I can actually use for it's original intended purpose) -

I have to be careful, but after 3 months of physical therapy, I can now have the occasional short session of preparing rough stock at the bench. For a while, I wasn't sure it would be possible again. I'm very happy about this, but now I best take it easy for a bit.
