  1. @stonebear2 haha! Blooming good question. All I can wonder is: if one installs Signal via #obtanium, would it face the same problem? I assume it would, but I don't know. Also can you have a second instance of Molly on your work profile maybe?

  2. @FreakyFwoof @revk

*If* you're looking for mainstream alternatives without age verification, you may wish to consider #grapheneOS ... I mostly use FOSS apps via #Obtanium or #Fdroid and the few proprietary apps I use (banking, MS teams, etc...) work fine. I've observed that users who are completely dependent on many niche proprietary apps sometimes complain about lost functionality. Equally I accept this is the cohort least likely to have capacity to find solutions to their problems. Anyway, Your Mileage May Vary is all I'm trying to say!

  3. @82mhz Not quite what you're looking for, but the #Obtanium app installer let's you back up a list of its installed apps to your cloud service, so you can reinstall the list if occasion arises. I have a feeling #neostore might allow this too.

  4. @geerlingguy @lattera ok i will escalate to rsj and simply ask - what is the best sbc device for building out these toys, i think pikvm is basically open sourced so caveat request to parts that are actually available #kvm branding #splash page #obtanium chinesium
testing some of the options against like 1g fiber may remove some of the bottlenecks and unknowns
    Alternative: Used Thin Client

Consider a Dell Wyse 5070 or HP t630 - often cheaper than SBCs, x86 architecture, better software compatibility, and includes USB3/PCIe. #sw stack #orange pi #build of materials #alibaba vs ebay

  5. Android: #Obtanium (instead of #FDroid app) is really awesome for managing app updates.

However, this method has an issue when the naming schema of the #apk files change on the server side, and you're using a name filter to determine the matching release file. You don't get updates anymore and you don't realize it. 🤷

    Be alert.

Today, I've got a very nasty upgrade issue with #SyncthingFork since they also decided to change the naming schema, the backup file format and had a direct upgrade issue. Bad combination.

Details: github.com/Catfriend1/syncthin and my own issue because of not following directions very closely: github.com/Catfriend1/syncthin

  6. I first started using in my journey. Now, over the past few months I've been using , though now I struggle to see the appeal. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I'm sort of split between just using fdroid (probably with droid-ify) or Obtanium. I'm really not sure, I don't want to have to put in the effort in switching over, but at the same time I'm not sure what the benefit of Obtanium is over fdroid. I really don't know if I should switch or not, any opinions?

  7. @m2m I'd love to get a Fairphone. At the moment I have a Galaxy S24 from my employer which is fine.. I've replaced all the default apps/keyboard with FOSS/offline alternatives and use both #Accrescent and #Obtanium for APK installations.

I'm hoping alternate firmware will be available to this phone sooner than later.

  10. So Obtanium may be my favorite Android app. Whenever one of the things I installed through it gets an update, it says "Kotatsu may have updated" (emphasis mine), and I giggle a little.

  12. @dansup this is fantastic now that #pixelfed has APK releases on Github - we can use #Obtanium and similar to get the updates direct as soon as they are published on Github!

  13. @AccurstDemon I keep considering #Obtanium, but I enjoy the security of the reproducible builds of #FDroid and #IzzyOnDroid. With Obtanium, there's nothing between me and a malicious release.

  14. @snikket_im or also the #Obtanium app for Android draws the APK directly from Github and installs it as it is released, for those who like living on the sharper edge ;-)
