Review: Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Looks Really Good
If you guys have been around since the start of this blog, you know that I love Avatar: The Last Airbender. Sure, I wasn’t there for the initial hype since the show ended before I was born, but I have it on Blu-ray, watched it for the first time when I was in middle school, and it holds a special place in my list of great stories. Even today as a Christian who’s generally more sensitive to the occult and other worldviews being pushed in media, I still love the show for its storytelling and deeper plot threads that endear it to so many people.
That said, when it was announced that ATLA was getting a movie sequel, I was pretty excited and knew it was something I would want to see. A couple years passed and now, we have our first looks at the movie with the official trailer out now.
Overall, the trailer looks intriguing. Granted, I haven’t read the ATLA comics, so maybe I’m saying this out of ignorance, but the history between the events of The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra seems underexplored, especially as characters grow up. The fuller lore is something that people have to figure out by reading the books, so to have a movie exploring that time period could be really good.
However, that said, I have a few nitpicks and concerns.
First of all, it’s being released on streaming instead of theaters. It airs on Paramount+ on July 25th, which sucks since a movie of this magnitude should absolutely be available in theaters. Just think of how awesome the animation would look on the big screen. But alas…I will wait and hope it becomes available on other streaming platforms, like Fandango.
Second, one of my concerns is that the movie is going to have some of the same flaws that the ATLA Netflix adaptation has, namely retconning characters in the name of “the modern audience.” In the original show, the characters had to grow up fast, and in the time they spent on their mission to defeat Ozai, they all became stronger and better characters. Katara and Aang became more confident, Sokka learned what it was to be a man, Toph learned how to be free and accept help from others. Zuko’s character arc was especially important, carrying much of the show though he was largely a side character, to the point where countless video essays have been made about it. Now that the characters have become adults, however, I do have to wonder if the writers will try to undo some of that as the Netflix adaptation did.
Speaking of writers being stupid, my third concern is identity politics being shoved into the movie. This issue in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is one that goes back to The Legend of Korra and the later comics. In The Legend of Korra, not only is Korra widely agreed upon to be a completely unlikeable girlboss as she embodies every negative aspect of modern feminism, but she’s later strongly implied within the show to be bisexual, something that’s further confirmed in the comics. That said, while the LGBTQ+ movement is falling out of favor today, I doubt that’s going to severely impact Hollywood continuing to shove it down our throats. Within the trailer itself, Zuko comments on another character’s attractiveness, which I hope is meant to be innocuous and not something they intend to make into a larger LGBTQ+ plot point.
With those concerns out of the way, I still think the movie has potential to be really good. I’ll just have to wait until I either get Paramount+ or it gets to other streaming services to watch and review it.

CW: Long Post; The Last Airbender
I rewatched The Last Airbender recently and it's difficult not to lament the fact that you can't make a show like this anymore. I would say warts and all, but the problems with the show are ether not problems or are just very minor. Almost no episode is wasted and it's pretty spotless.
I think a good example of "not a problem" would be that it's not afraid to be silly. I feel like whenever I talk about it, there's always that guy who chimes in to express that they feel it makes the show too juvenile and I don't agree.
Maybe we gave kids too much credit because fact of the matter is, our tastes weren't as deep as we liked to imagine. A lot of what made Avatar work were the character arcs and sentimental dialogue, not just the battle scenes where dramatic music is playing, but we don't realize until we get older.

This might be a niche example, but a similar point of contention was back when Power Rangers RPM first aired. This season showed death, destruction, war, disease - but it also has one of the characters eat some detonator putty because he thought it was pancake mix.But the show's big success in my eyes was Doctor K, who starts out the season framed as basically a computer, but becomes more socially well-adjusted, and perhaps even more and more human as the season progresses.
Ironically, that show ultimately taught kids that growing up and acting mature... is basically just being a kid again. It's being able to laugh and play and not take yourself so seriously. It's here where silliness does not betray a lack of maturity, but rather a surplus of it.

Regardless, similarly to Digimon, something I appreciated about Avatar were the character's contrasting personalities, where you could pair each of the two of them up and you could probably guess how they'd get along.The characters in Avatar are more dynamic than you'd expect and you could do a lot with, who each have clear goals, strengths, failings, and irrational weirdnesses that make them human. And they're not afraid of making any one character seem too unsympathetic.
If you look at Aang, a lot of his positive and negative attributes come from basically the same "core". This means Aang's negative qualities also come from traits we'd usually frame as heroic and good, and seeing as how the show ends, there's probably a reason why we don't see this at all anymore.
Now, if I had to pick a least favourite character it would probably be Azula. People often cite Zuko as a villain redemption done right, but on closer inspection he's not a villain and he doesn't get a redemption. It's more a recovery arc than a redemption arc.
But I feel Azula doesn't get that similar level of nuance and consideration. And don't get me wrong, it's okay that she doesn't turn out alright at the end, but I feel she never had a chance to become a good person in the first place.
A part of it is personal bias because it hasn't gone unnoticed that Azula was a lot of kids' sexual awakening, similarly to Harley Quinn generations prior. So, in the years following, rather than give the archetype some more nuance, they just turned her into this bizarre incest thirst trap.

So, I want to ask a question. Has anyone ever had a crush on a #Cartoon character before? I have and it happened when I was 9/10 years old. Now, I'm #Blind, and I thought because I simply can not se that she was human when in fact, she was a talking Bee. I would not miss episodes of the cartoon show because I liked hearing her voice and always hoped things would go well for her during the show. I would have dreams where it was us dream flying while holding hands and having adventures for fun. Good times, I just hope I'm not weird for it, and have never admited this to anyone. The cartoon show was from #Nickolodeon and it was called the mighty bee. She was the main character.
