So as a complete package #MuvLuv is a mixed bag. I really wish I could get some insight and pick age's brain on some things. They were clearly as a whole trying to take risks and do something great. I think some of it pays off while other parts will turn off people from a very much needed introduction to the series.

The whole time I was reading this VN I kept the mindset this this was originally released in 2003. So it is missing a lot of things I have been accustomed to from other VNs such as flowcharts, tips, or a fucking working auto skip system. Though with all of that said they do all kinds of engaging techniques with the SFX and sprite work, a lot of which many VNs could take note of today.

So at the end of it all I will say I do recommend this Visual Novel only if you have a lot of tolerance for boring nonsense which takes of the majority of the first half or so of the experience.

For me I am on to MuvLuv Alternative and hope it keeps getting better like I hear.

In #MuvLuv Unlimted the bonus route this time is Yuuko. While it is only one scene you can get at the end of any route as long as it is not your first play through. Even though it is abrupt it is not unbelievable and answers some questions not answered in another route and feels actually very important as it drops some mini bombs of lore. Very good and glad the bonus route was worth while and gave some extra useful info.

With that all routes are finished, all CGs collected, and all cheevos cheeved.

So while Chizuru's route in #MuvLuv Extra's was maybe one of my favorites and the biggest surprise I am afraid Unlimited's skin walker routes hurt this one the most. The main issue is the whole GameGuy arc is a tough sale for her. I just do not buy it at all. It makes sense for some of the other character's but I don't buy Chizuru or Kei really going that deep but that is just me.

I do like the adjustment to why she is a hard ass rule follower in this game. While it is not as dramatic as it is in Extra it is still very fitting and make sense for her character as a whole. Also much like in Extra I buy Chizuru and Takeru as a couple much like I do Meiya and Takeru, they have chemistry.

I will say her confession scene was the most unique and was fitting for her character (👓 biased aside).

Just have the bonus route left, which as far as I understand is a single scene.

to be honest I was hoping #MuvLuv Unlimited's Mikoto route as I was curious how they were going to sell me on how a gender changed character would be come a love interest when Takeru still have memories of them being a boy from Extra and how that turns into love interest. Well the answer is to just skin walk until all of the sudden Takeru is just over it all of the sudden. Kinda a let down.

Also Mikoto's conversion from Extra to Unlimited is the worst gender swap aside. They lose all personality they had from Extra and are just a scardy cat survival expert in Unlimited while larping that they are still a air head space cadet.

So these #MuvLuv Unlimited routes really skin walk inside each other. Even when there are differences they just are the same just with a different heroine paint. Makes it pointless to do the multiple routes.

Tamase is okay, a bit more believable as a love interest over a little buddy figure. Though really feels forced even for this games time.

So Im not sure if i am going to have much to say about these routes. If Keis route is anything to go off of it's almost a carbon copy of Meiyas but just tweak a couple words. The only real difference is the GameGuy arc in the beginning (but it might as well be the same as they play out the same) and the ending(s). Though even the endings are kind of the same just a light reskin. At least #MuvLuv Extra tried to explore different stories. I guess they really do not want you to go down every route (not like that is gonna stop me)c

I will say at least in the context of this game even if I am still not a fan of this character I can sorta buy her relationship and she is not as toxic.

So just finished my first route in #MuvLuv Unlimited being the Meiya route (Both endings). Wow like I do not get it I understand setting up a false sense of comfort with MuvLuv Extra and then revealing your hand with Unlimited but you did not have to make a whole ass (mostly) boring game doing it. It would be as if #Higurashi was just hours of the silly nonsense with out any of the thriller payoff.

Like I am not even sure age (the devs) wanted to or enjoyed making Extra. I thought at first maybe they just were not good at writing stories or characters. Yet boy was I wrong. Almost everyone is way more fleshed out and has meaning in this story. By no means is this at like masterpiece level based on what I played in Meiya's route, but it is certainly average.

There are many points in the story where I went "wait why are we making a deal about this" but over all each story arch did a good job of feeding into the overall narrative.

As for Meiya's route as a whole I am curious how it compares to others along with the common route as a whole. Her character was a lot more down to earth in this game while still having a proper level of class to her speech and actions. Both endings felt very rushed while Ending 1 feels like the proper and sensible choice while Ending 2 feels like a kinda out of character what if story. Her personal story arch you get at around Chapter 8 or 9 I will say not sure if common or for her specifically was the most out of place filler nonsense conflict out of any game in the series so far and made me question either Takeru or Meiya's ability to be in the military. Although luckily outside of that it was a enjoyable read.

Can not say I am looking forward to Kei's route next. Though I should be able to crank through them faster.

I really need to get back to #MuvLuv Unlimted I am about 75%~ through the Common/Meiya route and although not fantastic it is a MAJOR upgrade over Extra

. I do not want this to get lost in the recesses of my ADHD brain without finishing the series.

As a whole #MuvLuv Extra is a pretty rough ride at best & boring at worst. I can only really give it a 2.5/5 at most. Nothing really sticks out as a whole or makes the story really engaging. Like the common route only seems to exist as something to keep the reader busy while they think of a way to get to a point.

Almost all routes go like: Common route => Thing Happens (Maybe) => Chase Heroine Around => Heroine Gets Mad => Another Heroine Mentions Your Feelings => Chase Heroine => Confess => Heroine Kisses You => "Wow isn't everything great" => Credits

Now I am aware this game was originally released in 2003 so maybe it was doing some interesting things at the time but coming back to it now I felt like I was reading the thing a lot of media parodies now when talking about Anime culture.

So no this 2003 Japanese game about High School kids going through their final year of school and finding love did not resonate with a guy from America in his 30s with partner and kids.

I am curious where the story goes as a whole since again I have only heard good things about the later entries. Also attached is me ranking the routes from best to worst.

So saving the route I was most interested to try was Chizuru's route. Now by no means is it a work of art or even close to Key's level of pulling on heart strings. Also I know I have a biases( 👓 ). but damn am I impressed! There was depth, development, and use of characters.

I am so confused though did age (the devs) want to make the story about Chizuru? She got more CGs than most characters, a on screen family, a backstory, most costume changes, and her route is the only one that actually has a epilogue that talks about what happened to the other characters and how it tied in to the story.

Like I always felt out of all the character Meiya aside that Chizuru actually had some kind of chemistry with our cardboard cutout, and that she actually makes him have some kind of personality, just did not expect the game to prove me right with this route.

All routes in #MuvLuv Extra finished. 2 more VNs to go :blobfoxshocked:

More interesting than Marimo's "route" (really just a bonus thing, there is not even a cheevo for it), is how you get the route which is pretty much make sure you spread your choices paper thin among the heroines while making sure you acknowledge this teachers existence a couple times.

Rather odd that how the paint the situation in the final scene of it being taboo, when they had ZERO issue with bonkers age gaps with a minor in other routes (Keis).

On to #MuvLuv Extra's final route I am doing, and it is the one I think could have the most promise.

Tama's route I was kinda curious about since she is maybe the weakest of the side charters in the common route. All we knew is that she was a 8 year old (in terms of personality, physic, & intelligence) who was in her final year of high school and could shoot a boy and arrow pretty good. Well I think the game was not sure what to do with that info either because the pretty much kill the second game arc to focus on a archery match Tama has to compete in for "honor" and that is pretty much it. Like oh no she does not like being looked at while shooting. Well with our cardboard cut-out standing there it gets cured and then bam relationship?

Like the plot take such a sharp hard turn down this road of "lets shoot a bow and arrow", that everyone else becomes a foot note. Which is kinda ironic because that is what happens to Tama in the other routes. At first i was kinda digging this route because she kinds just felt like a little buddy you get to hang with like a little sibling, cousin, or so on. Though they has to force the romantic relationship to the point where they kiss again in the final scene its like oh yeah they are trying to do that.

So all in all not the worst #MuvLuv Extra has offered just kinda seems lost.

So Kei is by far the most lack luster and boring routes. I had no expectations since it was a side character route, yet was still dozing off at key parts. They pretty much kill the final arc of the common route (which makes since) and drag out the second arc to create "conflict" where there is none only to try and lead up to a "major" Kei reveal that is nothing only for every character to get cucked one way or another.

The worst part is this relationship between dry wall (Kei) and this cardboard cut-out (Takeru) is that in reality she would destroy this boys heart as they get older and face the real world, as she is straight toxic.

I guess my opinion is not the same as the publics if Steam achievements are anything to go by. Though a 4% difference does not seem like much, wonder if this metric is the same across other platforms.

Also quite funny that not even 3/4th of the peoe who started this game go to the opening video which takes maybe 15min of pressing a button and reading. Makes me wonder how many people skipped #MuvLuv Extra and just went to the the second game, Unlimited.

Further proving that #MuvLuv has a nothing Burger common route. I already finished Meiya's route and damn does it at last make sense as a whole compared to Sumika's forced fanfic of route which is funny because her railroading in the story seems even more intrusive and they really want you to feel bad for this girl. Meiya's route is at least a improvement and I at least buy their relationship and development into a couple. Truly the conical couple out of the two main heroines.

Not really looking forward to these other heroine's routes as they really feel like they have no reason to exist aside from one of them.

#MuvLuv Extra is such a nothing Burger of a story. I finished my first and what I assume is the worst route: Sumika. Like I am not a fan of most of the characters as I feel they are dated even for a VN from the early 2000s, but I felt every plot point was saying hey this girl is not the one. Like she is not a bad person I just DO NOT buy the "chemistry" between her and the walking cardboard cutout that is the protagonist.

At least I should be able to get through the rest of these routes faster and get to the great story that I hear is #MuvLuv Alternative.

Na koniec zostawiłem najmniejszy, acz najdroższy element całego zamówienia.

Zdobycie tej gry w wydaniu fizycznym i do tego podwójnym, to był koszmar. Gra wydana w lipcu 2024, miesiąc później – nie do kupienia 🤦🏻 Na zachodzie tylko serwisy aukcyjne i ceny z kosmosu, w Polsce już w ogóle nie ma o czym mówić (jeden sklep miał w ofercie, ale po zamówieniu okazało się, że jednak nie zrealizują). Nawet w Japonii dostać można było tylko kopię z drugiej ręki, a ceny były... zaporowe.

Jednak #MuvLuv to legenda #visualnovel.i, tytuł który w takiej czy innej formie obijał mi się o uszy od lat. Zupełnie przypadkiem dowiedziałem się, że remaster obu części trafił do sprzedaży, więc nie mogłem przejść obok niego obojętnie, szczególnie, że edycja japońska posiada też angielskie napisy.

Wydanie może nie zachwyca, nie jest to poziom premium z #Utawarerumono, ale miło posiadać w kolekcji taką perełkę. Oczywiście, gra miała też wydanie kolekcjonerskie, tylko na rynek japoński. Nie pytajcie ile to bydle kosztuje 🤷🏻

Muv-Luv Altered Fable is complete, so it's time to reflect on the series as a whole. There are definitely highs and lows, and Altered Fable was definitely a low. Some of the writing in the beginning and middle parts definitely had stuff going on that could have been great, but then the ending(s) were just horrible and went nowhere (and definitely had some consent issues, to put it mildly).

The series as a whole is definitely in a "I recommend this... but..." category.

Stop after you finish Alternative. It's a great ending incredible story, really well written. Altered Fable adds nothing. I guess if you really enjoyed Extra you might enjoy it *shrug*

As for Extra, that's the real reason for the "but...". Alternative is the good one and it's really good. It's also longer than both Extra and Unlimited combined, however you do need to go through both Extra and Unlimited for Alternative to hit properly, and Extra is... it's an early 2000s visual novel in the format of a dating sim with an unlikeable douchebag protagonist. There's a lot of stuff going on in the background and I now understand and appreciate what they were doing, but getting to that point is a slog. If you can get through the bullshit it's very rewarding, emotional well written sci-fi, definitely worth sticking through it.
