  2. CW: info-dump on alternative substrate method for terrariums

everything toy's learned thus far about an alternative terrarium substrate mix. Not the usual layered method with drainage, filtration, & soil. This mix has ideas from semi-hydroponics & planted aquariums. Springtails can also be added later as needed for cleanup.

by combining all the necessary substrate layer functions, maintenance becomes "simpler" & the setup looks cleaner. Its proposed approximate recipe is 2 parts inactive : 1 part charcoal : 1 part aquasoil, with all parts measuring granules around 3mm, just avoid a completely sandy mixture.

Michikusa uses another ratio of roughly 2 parts akadama : 1 part fuji sand : 1 part charcoal. This seems to work well too, so the aquasoil could be entirely unnecessary for moss & certain plants...

with both recipes, it's fine to mix in an extra part of an inactive ingredient. Michikusa does that for certain builds to add color and those terrariums are probably dandy :ms_exclamation_mark_gray:

  3. This little bit of #moss was on the ground under my #oldgrowth douglas fir trees, tossed down by one of the marauding #squirrels, so I brought it in to decorate my plant zone #fountain near my #wfh desk. Last year I made a tiny drip wall fountain with moss and rocks and cedar bark. Maybe I'll try a #mossarium this time. #mosstodon

  4. If you’re not following #mosstodon, you’re missing out.

I don’t have any wild moss to post at the moment, but here’s a #mossarium I made using native plants from my childhood home. It features a tableau of our old GI Joe action figures, who fought many a war on that soil. Made in Oregon, now living with my brother in Montana.

  5. @scottyoumans I've grown a little moss on tree bark as part of a table top fountain but eventually put it back outside. I'm hoping to try again after more research. Lots of ideas here reddit.com/r/Mossariums/ #mossarium
