Would you buy a wooden copy of the world's best-selling plastic chair? It's the Monobloc.

The mass-produced version is one piece of injection-moulded plastic. Its low cost made the Monobloc a commercial success from the 1970s.

The more recent wooden replica series was carefully crafted of elm. Skill, material, and exclusivity perhaps turn this familiar, mass-produced household shape into art.

Conceived of by Dutch designer Maarten Baas in 2008 while in China to study local artistic and cultural practices, Baas’ wooden interpretation reflects the contradictions he observed in Shanghai: cheap versus expensive, common versus luxury, machine-produced versus crafted, disposable versus collectible, and original versus copy.

Baas' 50 limited-edition chairs challenge viewers to consider the aesthetic design of the original humble, plastic Monobloc.

The Victoria & Albert Museum collection has both.
