Just so that we don't forget little #MarsHelicopter #Ingenuity that's now retiring up at Valinor Hills, in the Neretva Vallis ancient riverbed, in NW Jezero crater.

Where no rover has gone before: how Mars helicopters enable a new era of exploration

While waiting for news from #Ingenuity in the past, new ways were devised to keep the excitement high. Here, #Ingenuity was spotted from 480m afar after #Flight48 , by flickering before/after images captured by #Perseverance 11 sols apart.

#Ingenuity's #Flight47 captured from 120m away by #Perseverance on Sol 729. The camera was fixed and set to a 34mm focal length to capture as much of the action as possible, so resolution is not great, but this version zooms in and follows the #MarsHelicopter while it flies across the field, hopefully adding to the visual result.

"NASA believes it understands why Ingenuity crashed on Mars" by @arstechnica / @sciguyspace - First ever investigation into an aircraft crash on another planet has concluded. #NASA #MarsHelicopter🚁 #Ingenuity had difficulty auto-navigating on flat featureless terrain. Unable to detect and counteract its wind drift, it touched down with horizontal motion that tipped it over, and damaged all its rotor blades on impact, and ripped one off. https://arstechnica.com/space/2024/12/nasa-believes-it-understands-why-ingenuity-crashed-on-mars/ #Mars #aviation #avgeek #drone

사상 처음으로 다른 행성에서 항공사고가 났습니다. #MarsHelicopter

Talking about #Ingenuity…
"[T]he helicopter still beams weather and avionics test data to the #Perseverance rover about once a week." 😍 😍 💕 (last heard from it on Nov 21, Sol 1330)
A detailed assessment of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s final flight on Jan. 18, 2024, which will be published in the next few weeks as a NASA technical report.

We might as well now say goodbye to #Ingenuity, for it will be very long till #Perseverance has an opportunity to be in radio range with the #MarsHelicopter again, or have a line-of-sight to it.
As seen in the map, this is the closest the rover will get to the heli being visible (light toned area) for several years.

At last, a MastcamZ image captured in the direction of #Ingenuity, albeit one at half the max resolution (110mm) of the camera, 63mm.
And, lo and behold, the #MarsHelicopter IS VISIBLE!
From a distance of roughly 2km, it occupies 6 whole pixels in total! 😃

As #Ingenuity fades into the distance, an old daguerreotype-like photograph of its whereabouts seems appropriate.

A sol too late.
This view toward #Ingenuity came one sol too late. The #MarsHelicopter is again obscured by an intermediate hill.

#Ingenuity would be easy to spot in an image if it occupied a few visible pixels, since the line-of-sight to the #MarsHelicopter passes right above the Mount Washburn group of hills, where #Perseverance had been 102 sols ago.
Maps were made with #QGIS using #NASA's #MMGIS data and #USGS, #HiRISE DTMs and imagery
-
Yes, that's where #Ingenuity is.
But we can't see it in NAVCAM images, maybe not even in 110mm MastamZ zooms. The SUPERCAM telescope *might* be able to pick up a few pixels of it, if it ever targeted the #MarsHelicopter.

Well, we may have gotten what we wished 😀 !
#Perseverance has moved again, AND, has changed site a̲g̲a̲i̲n̲, to 58. What made the team change two site numbers in just two sols? The terrain around seems uninteresting (although IANAG)
But…
Spending a few sols listening for, taking a few shots, and downloading images from the #MarsHelicopter IS indeed a very good reason. Maybe this double change of site right where #Ingenuity becomes visible again may not be a coincidence.

#Ingenuity is seen here sticking its solar panel above the sandy waves of #ValinorHills in this image from Sol 1152 received today. While the solar panel of the #MarsHelicopter may still be visible from the rover at its present location on Sol 1159, it will soon disappear when #Perseverance clears the ripples it's facing on its way northwest to Bright Angel.

I believe we can now reconstruct the last moments of #Ingenuity's #Flight72 with some certainty. The actual trajectory may be a little more complicated, e.g. turning while hopping, but we'll never know.
EDIT: there is a new theory about Flight 71, see comments.

Maybe one of our last images of #Ingenuity, if one can call those few pixels an "image" of the #MarsHelicopter. There haven't been any SUPERCAM images from this new angle so far, so such wide FOV NAVCAM images is all that we have.

I reprocessed the Sol 1110 Ingenuity image with AI-upscaling to improve visual fidelity.
As @65dBnoise already noted, there seems to be disturbed sand on the other side of the sand ripple. We are still hoping for SuperCam images of the area to get a better understanding of what happened.

There are some new marks visible on the regolith ripple, that were previously hidden behind the crest. This will definitely change the way the #Flight72 landing events have been interpreted by the #MarsHelicopter team.

On Sol 1100 #Perseverance drove 33m to a new location, 18m WSW, apparently trying to avoid a sandy patch south of the rocky top in front of it. It's now 373m away from #Ingenuity, but the #MarsHelicopter is still not in view.
