Was not expecting that U-turn 🤔 Maybe some of the post drilling data was corrupted which forced a return? Time will tell :)

  12. Meanwhile on Mars:
For those that have been following along. After several days of robotic arm gymnastics, the slab of rock that was stuck on Curiosity Rover's drill bit has finally been liberated.

  14. Kristallnacht

#Perseverance observing in the cool of the night (it's winter in Jezero, so -80 to -90°C) an apparently crystalline structure in the interior of the recent abrasion in the area north of Lac De Charmes (for lack of a named place nearby)

  15. …and a 3D version of the above, since the good people at NASA who operate #Perseverance regularly capture WATSON images from a slightly different angle, thus creating enough parallax for a stereo effect.

  16. This was not on my Mars Bingo Card.

Curiosity rover lifts the rock that is stuck to its drill, gives it a shake which liberated some loose material, but fails to dislodge the errant rock on Sol 4881 (April 30, 2026). The team has an option to eject the drill bit assembly and use one of its spare drill bits, but I assume that will be the last resort. Animated HazCam GIF with timestamps.

  17. If, for some reason, you wanted to observe an abraded Martian rock at sub-millimeter resolution but you were afraid to ask…

  18. Meanwhile in Gale Crater.

In this animated GIF we can see dust cascading from the rock that appears to have been lifted by Curiosity's drill bit. The timestamps show the 9 HazCam images were acquired over 15 minutes on Sol 4879 (April 28, 2026). I'm assuming the dust was liberated by the operation of one of the voice coils in the drill. This attempt to free the drill bit does not appear to have been successful.

  19. …and a combination of the 2nd image above with another one under artificial light, probably makes it easier to see certain features:

  20. Meanwhile on Mars:
Did Curiosity Rover just lift a rock after drilling into it? Here's a short animation of its drilling operation with timestamps on front HazCam images from Sol 4877 (April 26, 2026)

The first subframe image shows the drill above the target prior to drilling, the next four images show last images of the drilling phase. The last frame was acquired after they raised the robotic arm.

  25. Among the newly identified molecules is a nitrogen heterocycle[…]. This kind of molecular structure is considered a predecessor to RNA and DNA, two nucleic acids that are key to genetic information.

“That detection is pretty profound because these structures can be chemical precursors to more complex nitrogen-bearing molecules”

    Another exciting discovery was benzothiophene…

  27. Another interesting observation, here made easier with the 3D image, is that the regolith doesn't seem to stick on the underside of that stone, possibly meaning that the moist(?) part is only a few centimeters deep.
